Tutorial for the Displacement Filter by Edward Sotelo

What you be needing: - A shirt. Eaither photographed or scanned. In this example Ill be using a shirt that I scanned. - An art peice. Either an ai. eps. psd. Well, anything thats already cut out so you wont do masking. :) Ill be using my cupcake as an example.

NOTE* Make sure you place files somewhere you can easily find them. Very Important.

Fire up PHOTOSHOP and open your shirt.

Duplicate the shirt Layer and turm into Black and White. Methods for Applying B/W. - HotKey* CTLR+ SHIFT + U / (MAC) COMMAND + SHIFT + U - Applying an Adjustment or an Audjustment Layer In my case I used an Adjustment Layer with a clipping Mask. Any method will do just fine. NOTE* Maybe some other time I can discuss ----Destructive Editing and Non- Destructive Editing.

The Next Step will be to apply a simple Gaussian Blur to the COPY - BACKGROUND LAYER Set the G.Blur to .5 (A little bit of blur will work just fine)

VIEW NEXT PAGE FOR CONT. STEPS

Now that youve applied the Gaussian Blur and your image is set to Grayscale. Well now be saving the image as a PSD (remember to place somewhere, where youll be easily be able to locate) Go to: FILE> SAVE AS NOTE* I know its easier to use a Hot Key - but I dont recommend it. I have in the past accidently done the wrong one and ended up not being able to re- edit my piece. :( PERSONAL CHOICE

The Diolog Box should appear. and use these settings. (We dont want a huge file right)

Make sure you set it as a PSD and click on AS A COPY and deselect LAYERS

ALMOST DONE! :3

If you want - you can delete both the Adjustment Layer and the Background Copy or just hide them. Now place your vector or whatever it may be on your shirt.

I chose place mines here :)

Now with the image layer selected. (I would be selecting cupcake) Go to: FILTER> DISTORT> DISPLACE

Youll be getting a diolog box.

I set mines to HORIZONTAL SCALE: 10 VERTICAL SCALE: 10 STRETCH TO FIT REPEAT EDGE PIXELS NOTE* SETTING CAN CHANG DEPENDING ON PROJECT REMEMBER TO REVERT BEFORE APPLYING A NEW DISPLACEMENT

When you hit OK youll be getting a new diolog box. With this one youll be selecting your DISPLACEMENT.PSD file we made earlier

And There you GO your image has molded with the shirt! Dont move the image around - sadly it doesnt change when you do so. I wish it did. Will save time :)

I know it doesnt look pretty - this is where the photoshop magic happens. Youll have to mess around with the Opacity and Blending modes to get it just right :) heres my result after doing so.

YAY! A MOCK-UP! :3 OVERLAY / OPACITY 67 COLOR / OPACITY 67 OVERLAY / OPACITY 90

How I set it up:
