PRACTICAL 2 TENSILE TEST OBJECTIVE: To determine the stress, strain and young modulus and behaviour of mild steel bar when subjected to an axial tensile test. EQUIPMENT / APPARATUS: a) b) c) d) Universal testing machine Steel reinforcing bars / specimen Cut-off machine Measurement apparatus such as ruler, divider, etc.

THEORY: One of the simplest test for determining mechanical properties of a material is the tensile test. In this test, a load is applied along the longitudinal axis of a circular test specimen (Figure 1). The applied load and the resulting elongation of the member are measured. The resulting stress-strain curve or diagram gives a direct indication of the material properties (Figure 2).

PROCEDURE : i. ii. Check the Digital Force Display meter reads zero with no load. Place a hanger with a 100 g mass to the left of the cut (40 mm away) w cut

Based on calculation. Conclusion : Based on the graph, the load increasing due to the increasing of the shear force. That shown the graph was increase. The graph of the bending moment also shown the same result. We can get the answer by using calculation based on the theory. The theory was accepted. When do the experiment many precaution we need to take for avoid the parallax and system error. The answer of calculation are different with the experimental. This happen because many error when doing the experiment.
