BYOD Group Activity Lesson Ideas and Resources English and Literature 1.

When teaching research skills, it is often challenging to help students understand the significance of website evaluation. An effective method for helping students distinguish the difference between valid and reliable resources and those that are not is to show them sites and why they are good or bad resources. In teaching CCGPS standard ELACC11W8, List.ly (http://list.ly/) will be a good curation web 2.0 tool that students can explore. The teacher can create a List.ly that students can access in addition to a guided assignment. Use of this tool will provide the opportunity for more differentiated instruction of the standard, as students can work with the List.ly at their own pace and from their own device. Once students learn how to evaluate sources for the purpose of gathering information, they will need to demonstrate their understanding. To make application of CCGPS standards ELACC11W6 and ELACC11W8, students can use Scoop.it (http://www.scoop.it/?lp=free). Students can be given an American Literature related topic or theme. To support that theme they will search for valid and reliable digital information. Finally, Scoop.it can be used as a student curation tool. For each resource they curate, students can write explanations of their selections. They can share their curations with their peers to get additional feedback on the validity of the collected resources and how well they support the assigned topic. 2. The Count of Monte Cristo Unit is a literature study with cross-curricular elements. Using Microsoft One Note, students will share an organized collaborative notebook with the entire class. Students will add content throughout the unit and sections as the project progresses. The Skeletal Notebook Section tabs will include the following: Project Overview Activities Notes Trail Information Law Evidence Rules Tutorials Evidence Letters Witness Questions Prosecution/Defense, etc. History/Social Studies 1. Using Blendspace (https://www.blendspace.com), students will be introduced to a unit about famous African Americans and receive resource sites to review. For this unit, students will collaborate and summarize their findings using Google

Drive. They will then use Voice Thread (https://voicethread.com) to create a web based interactive presentation utilizing photographs, and information that they have gathered during the research and collaboration phase. 2. Students will use UnitedStreaming.com (http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/?location=www5) to research the life of Fredrick Douglass. After their research is completed, they will create a Prezi (https://prezi.com/) describing the Impact of Fredrick Douglass Fight for Slaves Freedom and use Timeline Maker (http://www.timelinemaker.com) to denote important events of Douglass life. 3. During a kindergarten lesson about symbols of the United States, students will use Google Earth (http://www.google.com/earth/) to search for areas where these symbols are located. NetTrekker (http://www.nettrekker.com/us/) will be used to set up searches for students to collaborate on their research. Learning will be enhanced through language exchange in the collaboration and by the use of multimedia. Science 1. Students will visit PHET (http://phet.colorado.edu) to work with batteries, wiring and connectors to develop circuits through simulation. After building the circuits, they will sketch a diagram that solves the problem provided. 2. Students will use Office 365 or Google Docs to complete a spreadsheet compiling data about parts found in the dissection of an owl pellet. They will then create a graph of their data using Online Chart Generator (http://www.onlinecharttool.com) or DIY Chart (http://www.diychart.com). The graphs will be shared with other groups in the class and a discussion will take place about the differences in their results.
