Lesson Topic: Incorporating BYOD into the classroom Grade level: Professional Development Length of lesson: 1 hour
Stage 1 Desired Results Content Standard(s): NETS-T1: Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments: Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETSS. a.) Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity NETS-T5: Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership : Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. a.) Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning. Understanding (s)/goals Participants will 1. understand how instruction can be enhanced with the use of students own devices in the classroom. 2. understand how students can gain a deeper understanding of the material covered when technology is used. Related Misconceptions: 1. BYOD is difficult to implement, because teachers must know how to use all of the students devices, so they can assist students in completing assignments. 2. When technology is incorporated into the curriculum, the technology becomes the focus instead of the topic being taught. 3. BYOD will cause distractions in the classroom that wouldnt otherwise exist. Essential Question(s): How can the incorporation of technology in the classroom save time, enhance instruction, and improve students understanding of course material? Topical Questions: 1. How can BYOD effectively convey material in a more efficient manner than traditional forms of delivery? 2. Why does the integration of students devices improve understanding of course material beyond what might be accomplished with conventional forms of instruction?

Participant objectives (outcomes): Participants will be able to: 1. 2. Identify areas of instruction that can be enhanced by the use of BYOD. Identify Web 2.0 tools that could be incorporated into an existing lesson plan to more effectively deliver course material. Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Performance Task

Working in pairs, participants will identify an existing lesson where incorporating BYOD will enrich the students learning experience. Participants will also describe what types of Web 2.0 applications could be included and why those specific tools are appropriate for the lesson described in a BYOD environment. These plans will be shared with the class.

The unit will begin with the question, How can BYOD enhance student learning and simultaneously save instruction time? The instructor will introduce objectives and overarching/topical questions for the workshop and explain the culminating performance task. There will be a brief discussion about teachers concerns with BYOD and how those concerns might be addressed. Benefits of BYOD will be described and why the decision has been made to implement this program in so many schools will be discussed. There will be a brief discussion with participants concerning their understanding and views about BYOD. Any needed clarification will be provided. A brief demonstration of how technology can be more effective in enhancing student understanding than other traditional methods will be presented. Web 2.0 tools that are platform agnostic and perform well on most devices will be discussed. The instructor will ask participants if they have used any Web 2.0 applications in their instruction that they have found to be especially helpful in aiding student learning. A BYOD lesson that incorporates multiple Web 2.0 tools will be presented to illustrate the practicality of BYOD in the classroom. Tips for a successful BYOD implementation in the classroom will be discussed. Participants will be paired together to identify a lesson where they believe BYOD would be beneficial. They will record their ideas and save them to SkyDrive or Google Docs. These documents will be shared with their instructor. Participants will present their activity to the class. These presentations and lessons will be compiled and shared with everyone taking the workshop. The instructor will ask participants if they have any questions and will offer clarification concerning any misunderstandings that might exist. Participants will complete a post assessment and workshop survey.
