Proverbs Chapter 2 The Work of Wisdom

Intro.: One of the most amazing aspects of the resurrection was what Jesus body could do. Recall how he could enter a room with the door closed without opening the door; he disappeared and reappeared on more than one occasion. He claimed to have flesh and bone and he also ate fish. It appears that his resurrected body was designed to live in two dimensions. Even before our resurrection, we live in two dimensions. Read: Proverbs chapter 2 Review: The book of Proverbs was written (primarily) by Solomon. (Proverb 30 written by Agur) The theme of book centers around the subject of wisdom o Solomon got his wisdom from God- See- 1st Kings 3:3-12 What is a Proverb: Its a pithy/brief statement that seeks to state a general (not absolute) truth; it is usually rich in meaning, practical and gives advice that is useful in the real world. Proverbs are derived from astute observations about how life usually works. What is wisdom: Dawsonology: wisdom is the application of Gods Word to lifes circumstances. The Hebrew word for wisdom (hokma) has several meanings; o it means to have a technical skill, aptitude, or ability (Exodus 31) o it means superior mental ability; intellectual brilliance; and vast knowledge. o it can also mean experience, or good common sense. Summary: Wisdom is basically the very practical art of being prudent, sensible, and skillfully insightful so that one might prosper and have good success in life. Wisdom results in disciplined and proper behavior which is learning how to do what is right, just and fair. Ultimately wisdom results in the ability to steer through life in a way that wins favor and a good name in the sight of both humanity and God. (Proverbs 3:4) Why would a person want wisdom? The idea of wisdom stems from the need of people to cope with the reality of human existence for sheer survival. The desire to gain mastery over life through the power of reason. To share this accumulated wealth of knowledge of observation and experience with future generations.

Wisdom originates from God Proverbs 8:22 What is knowledge? Dawsonology: The acquisition of Gods Word by means of reading, studying, and meditating upon. Websters: facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject; awareness or familiarity gained by experience of a fact or situation. Represents a tool box of revelation concerning God, humanity, creation and the spiritual realm, all gathered from the Word of God. What is understanding? Dawsonology: The action of phase or buy-in phase of the process. Understanding involves internalizing knowledge so that it directs actions. Webster: the power of comprehending; the power to make experience intelligible by applying concepts and categories. Proverbs 2:1-2 (Chapter one states the purpose for wisdom, while chapter states the prerequisites for wisdom.) The 8 ifs of the prerequisites to wisdom: o If you receive/accept my words- the idea of welcoming Gods instruction o If you treasure my commands in your heart where Gods Word takes on genuine value to you; something precious. o If you incline your ear (listen closely) to wisdom to eliminate distractions for focused listening. o If you apply (direct) your heart to understanding it suggests what a person does who plans to take corrective action. o If you cry out (pray) for discernment (insight) the ability to foresee or to see behind the scenes; to interpret motives or perceived danger. o If you lift your voice (pray) for understanding implies to pray for the strength needed to do what needs to be done. o If you seek her as silver curious why Solomon chose to use the word silver here instead of gold. 1st Kings 10:21 o If you search for her (wisdom) like hidden treasure- the idea is like someone mining for gold or looking for hidden treasure. Proverbs 2:5 Then you will: o Understand the fear of the Lord (comprehend) o Knowledge find the knowledge of God (specific revelation)
