Principals Report
Warragul Show
The Warragul Show Committee was extremely pleased that Warragul North Primary School was involved with this years show. It certainly was delightful for the students of Warragul North Primary School to be involved. Mrs Legg, our Performing Arts Teacher, had spent many lunchtimes rehearsing with seventeen Year Five and Six students who sang at the show and what great performances they gave.

Thur 13 Mar Fri 14 Mar

Mrs Dunlop had also been very busy in the art room with students from Foundation through to Year Four preparing art work for the show. The theme this year was Our Favourite Pets and Animals and there certainly was a huge array of different animals on display. Well done to Mrs Legg, Mrs Dunlop and the students involved for all their hard work preparing for the Warragul Show. Top effort! Continued on page 2.

OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS CARE

The theme at OSHC is Autumn with a tree of Autumn colours being created by the children. It will be on our feature wall. Children have been completing All About Me forms which are then laminated and displayed on walls in the OSHC house. Birthdays for each month are displayed and a cake for the birthday child is shared with the other children at snack time. OSHC is available on a permanent or casual basis. Enrolment forms are available from the school office or from OSHC. A waiting list is held if a session is already fully booked. It is important that the school office or OSHC is notified if your child is not going to attend a session they have been booked in for as that place can then be used for a casual booking. Failure to cancel will incur a charge. Phone numbers for bookings and cancellations are: School Office 5623 4066 OSHC Mobile 0418 662 225 Hours for OSHC are: Before School Care: 7am. to 8.45am. Division Swimming
Last Wednesday 5th March Division Swimming took place at the Warragul Leisure Centre. The excited group of students swam exceptionally well and as a result all swimmers progressed to the Gippsland Region Swimming which is taking place today, Wednesday 12th March, at Sale Aqua Energy outdoor pool. We wish all swimmers a successful day.

Senior Athletics Sports

Children who normally travel to school by bus and those children, who are in Before School Care or booked in to After School Care, will travel to and from the track on the bus.

The Senior Athletics Sports day for students in Years Three to Six will be held tomorrow, Thursday 13th March at the Geoff Watt Track in Burke Street, Warragul. Full details of the day were sent home on Tuesday. Please drop your children off at the Geoff Watt Track in Burke Street at 8.45am and they will need to be collected at the end of the day at 3.15pm.

Please note: the canteen at school will not be open on Thursday 13th March due to the Senior Athletics Sports day.

Musical Performance at the Warragul Show

What a fabulous effort from a group of Year Five and Six students who proudly represented our school at the Warragul Show on Saturday 1st March. The students sang a selection of songs that they had rehearsed during the two weeks prior to the show. Congratulations, we are all very proud of you, you sang beautifully!

Parent/ Teacher Interviews

Parent/Teacher Interviews are an important part of the reporting process
Parent/Teacher Interviews are scheduled to take place the week beginning Monday 24th March, 2014. Students will bring home Parent/Teacher interview notices next week. Please ensure you fill out your request for an interview time and return it back to the classroom teacher as soon as possible. This will not only secure you an interview time, but hopefully one that is at a convenient time to suit your schedule. The Education Department has provided the following guidelines for parents regarding Parent/ Teacher Interviews: Parent/Teacher interviews are an opportunity for you to meet your childs teacher/s. By asking questions and gathering more detail about the information provided on the student reports, you have an opportunity to become more involved in your childs learning and provide support where needed. You may also request interviews at other times. If you are concerned about your childs progress, discuss these concerns with their teacher. You can contact the school for an appointment and make a mutually convenient time to meet with your childs teacher. Included with this newsletter is an article Making the most of your parent-teacher interview by Michael Grose (parenting educator).

Making the most of your parent-teacher interview

It makes sense for you as a parent to be prepared and ready to make the most of the brief time you have with teachers.

Parent-teacher interviews provide a great opportunity for you as a parent to find out how your child is progressing at school. Many parent-teacher interviews are tightly scheduled and can seem a little rushed. Teachers are generally highly organised so they can make the most of the time you have together. It makes sense also for you as a parent to be prepared and ready to make the most of the brief time you have with teachers. Here are some guidelines to make the most of these interviews: 1. Prepare well. Before the interview, list any questions that you want to raise. Keep questions short and to the point. 2. Attend with a partner or friend particularly if you are nervous or unsure. It is easy to miss a point and often difficult to relay information to a partner. 3. Give the teacher a chance to make an assessment of your childs progress. This may seem obvious but some interviews never get off the ground because enthusiastic parents take over. 4. Take notes and clarify information that you dont understand. What do you mean by he needs to spend more time reading...? Make sure you have a good understanding of the messages your childs teacher is giving. 5. Be prepared to give an assessment of your childs performance. You may be asked how you think your child is performing so give an honest, but realistic assessment.

6. Ask how you can help your child if there are any areas that need to be strengthened. No doubt your childs teacher will have some strategies for you to assist your child, so make sure you have a clear understanding before you leave. If there are unresolved issues or you wish to discuss your childs difficulties in greater detail, consider asking for another interview. This is being respectful of the teachers time and of those parents who are to follow. Once the interview is over consider how you will discuss it with your child. Avoid giving generalisations or simplistic appraisals such as: The teacher says you are a good girl. Discuss areas that need work in positive terms. Talk about strengths or successes first before discussing areas that may need more work. A clear message such as, We talked about your reading and the teacher suggested that we should try... is far more helpful. Involve your child in discussing any plans for improvement. Avoid making big plans for your child to improve in a subject area without consulting him or her. By involving children and taking notice of their ideas plans are more likely to be successful.
