I want to pursue MS degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Power system.

I have a deep belief that this course would serve as a platform in comprehending the physical aspects of Electrical Energy propagation in a more elegant way and it would also provide the great insights for exploring the technologies designed to improve the Energy Efficiency and promoting the Sustainable Energy. With the help of this program, I will be able to develop pragmatic solutions to the complications arising in Energy systems and add value to the society. I had very strong inclination towards Science and Mathematics, my keen interest in these subjects motivated me to write the toughest engineering entrance examination in India IITJEE (Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance examination). Here I qualified in top 1.5 percentile in approximately 0.3 million test takers, which gave me the opportunity to attend the prestigious Indian School Of Mines, Dhanbad (ISM Dhanbad). ISM Dhanbad bears a reputation of being one of the oldest universities for Applied Sciences and Engineering in India and it has been consistently ranked among top 10 Engineering Colleges of India. With my hard work, I placed myself among the top performers in the core Electrical Engineering subjects. I was awarded the NTPC merit Scholarship for all four years of undergraduate Study. I graduated with a first class GPA in top 20 percent of my batch. After that I wrote GATE (graduate aptitude test in Engineering) and qualified with 99.23 percentile out of 53000 Electrical Engineering applicants in the year 2010. Apart from the regular course studies at ISM, Dhanbad, I also worked in academic and industrial projects. As an Intern in NTPC Barh in my 3rd year, I did my project on Analysis of routine test of ICT with emphasis on SFRA (sweep frequency response analysis). Here I worked in close coordination with ABB Engineers on 200 MVA auto transformer for authenticating all the parameters for parallel operation of transformers & SFRA for specifically predicting any deformation in Windings of transformer. For having hands on experience with the real problems of Electrical Substation, I did my bachelors thesis on Study of 220 KV DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation) substation under the guidance of Dr. Vivekananda Mukherjee, in this we took a brief idea about Substation equipments, different busbar Schemes and SCADA, analysis of the protection system, insulation Coordination and relay coordination. We focused on fault analysis, their impact on the life of equipment, periodic and preventive maintenance for ensuring the reliability of the system. After the completion of this project, I integrated it further with the optimal over-current relay coordination using genetic algorithm. I am currently working as an Assistant Manager in the Electrical wing of 540 MW thermal power plant of Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL). I am presently involved in developing the precise simulation model for smart grid project of Urjanagar (our township). I am currently working on analyzing the stability of the multistring PV system interfaced with distribution network under disturbed conditions. The transient response of the system under disturbed conditions and impacts of various unsymmetrical faults on the system is being analysed. Before this project, my passion for Solar Energy was more intensified by my research work on the Analysis of behaviour of the PV system under different physical and environmental conditions for different MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) algorithms. I developed a baseline Smart grid model of small community in which the power ow between Grid and community was simulated using Simulink for a time span of 24 hours. I have also developed a much more precise model for load frequency control of two area system in Matlab/Simulink. In this model the gains of PID controller was optimised using Genetic algorithm with ISE and ITAE performance indices. I have also developed Matlab code for numeral recognition as an alternate and efficient approach to extract data. Apart from this, I look after Operation and maintenance of 220 KV Switchyard, Power Transformers and Generator including its protection and control, SCADA and emergency handling during blackouts.

I have also done power system load flow studies, fault studies, relay setting coordination, transient studies, Study of AC/DC schematics, Power forecasting for its optimized sale. My diligent attitude and creative working skills have helped me in getting promotion only in 8 months among the batch of young Engineers who joined with me. I believe in team work and with the Gods grace, I was the part of the best team for the year 2011-12 in my unit of JSPL. I used to provide free coaching to poor students for IIT-JEE preparation in our township. These teaching skills were developed when I used to teach in Kartavya (provides education to poverty stricken and slum dwelling students, listed in 20 successful nonprofits started by students in World). As a student, I would love to share the experience gained in the thermal power plant with the people at the department. I would like to cover the practices related to operation and maintenance of 220 KV, 400 KV switchyard, ideas of efficiency optimisation, governing system, SCADA and the environmental concerns of the thermal power plant. I would like to help my juniors in their courses by my teaching skills and also in their research projects of modeling and simulation. I would encourage and provide proper motivation to my batchmates and juniors which can help them in achieving their goals easily. My research work in the field of Smart Grid, renewable energy sources, and Power system control and the experience gained in the power plant can significantly contribute to the current research taking place in the Smart Grid Power Systems Laboratory and the Electrical Engineering Department. The knowledge gained in MS program will broaden my horizon of Engineering, which will help me in serving the society in a much better way especially by making Rural/Remote areas self-dependent of localized power based on renewable energy sources. The technical skills acquired will help me in developing more reliable, efficient and environment friendly energy systems. The qualities which i will gain from the college will definitely take me to an apex level in the future. Furthermore, graduate studies would provide the requisite focus and direction to my efforts for a more effective contribution. Michigan Technological University since long has been an excellent choice for the students like me, who wish to pursue their careers in the field of Electrical Engineering. I would like to emphasize that given a chance to work with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Michigan Technological University, I would leave no stone unturned to prove my worth as a graduate student and if desired, Research Assistant. Further, owing to the fact that I belong to a middle class family, I would request you to kindly consider my candidature for merit based financial support and assistantship. I am looking forward to an intellectually inspiring and fruitful association with Michigan Technological University. Thank you immensely for considering my application.
