1 1.1 This EURONORM covers the grades of wrought steel listed in Tables 2 to 5 namely : (a) (b) (c) (d) unalloyed cold-work tool steels (see Table 2); alloyed cold-work tool steels (see Table 3); alloyed hot-work tool steels (see Table 4); high-speed tool steels (see Table 5).
SCOPE 1.2 Unless otherwise stated, this EURONORM applies to all types of hot-rolled, forged or cold-drawn products which are to be supplied in one of the surface and heat-treatment conditions given in clause 3.3.
REFERENCES EURONORM 18 Selection and preparation of samples and test-pieces for steel and iron and steel products.
EURONORM 21 General technical delivery requirements for steel and iron and steel products.
REQUIREMENTS (a) The shape, surface condition and the dimensions of the product (see clauses 3.3 and 3.8). (b) The type of steel (see Tables 2 to 5) as well as the heattreated condition (see clause 3.3). (c) The requirement class (see Table 1) and if called for the kind of documentation required (see clause 4.5).
3.1 Information to be supplied with enquiry and order The corresponding paragraphs of EURONORM 21 are applicable. The following information in particular shall be given in the enquiry and order :
Only the last edition of the EURONORMS quoted is valid Copyright by the Standardization Offices of the European Communities' Member States

When ordered to the requirement class 3 the minimum Rockwell C hardened values given in Tables 2 to 5 apply for hardening test-pieces prepared in accordance with clause 4.2.3. 3.6.3 In Figures 1 to 4 the hardness/tempering temperature curves of the steels are reproduced for guidance. Note: The hardness/tempering temperature-curve for a given steel type can vary to a noticeable extent depending on the chemical composition of the cast or of the test-piece, and the hardening and tempering conditions. Consequently the curves in Figures 1 to 4 which were derived from the test results from different sources can at present give only a rough idea of the tempering behaviour of the steels. The curves may, with the above reservations, be used for test-pieces, which were tempered with the tempering temperature in question, but which otherwise were prepared according to the conditions for the hardening test (see clause 4.2.3). When using the curves to estimate the hardness to be expected with hardened and tempered tools, it should be taken into account that the optimum heat-treatment conditions for tools are not necessarily identical to those specified for the test-pieces and particularly that the suggested heating times in clause 4.2.3 may not be right for thicker tools.
3.7 Surface quality 3.7.1 All products shall have a surface finish compatible with the production process used and be free from surface imperfections which could impair significantly their subsequent processing or serviceability.
3.7.2
Ground, polished or finished machined products shall be free from surface defects and decarburization.
3.7.3
Hot-rolled, forged, cold-drawn or rough-machined products shall be delivered with a machining allowance suffi-
Page 3 cient for the removal of decarburization and surface defects from all surfaces by machining or grinding. 3.7.3.2 For products other than the bars mentioned in clause 3.7.3.1, for bar shapes and dimensions not included in the Table and for rough-machined products, the minimum machining allowances are to be agreed at the time of the enquiry or order.
3.7.3.1 In the case of hot-rolled, cold-drawn or hot-forged rounds, hexagons and octagons, unless otherwise agreed at the time of the order, the values given in Table 6 shall apply for the minimum machining allowances per side for the removal of surface decarburization and surface imperfections.
4 TESTING
4.2 Sampling
4.2.1 For product analyses, the millings shall be taken uniformly over the entire cross-section of the product. If this is impracticable, the millings shall be taken from a suitable position representing the whole cross-section.
4.2.2
For the Brinell hardness test, the surface of the sample or of a test-piece taken from the sample in the delivery condition shall be prepared in accordance with the requirements of EURONORM 3.
4.2.3
For the hardening test, one test-piece shall be cut off from the sample as indicated in Figure 5. The test-pieces shall be hardened and tempered under the conditions given in Tables 2 to 5, precautions being taken to avoid decarburization. The total heating time in a salt bath (soaking time) shall be:
Total heating time for For test-pieces from hardening min. tempering min.
25 1 3
60 At least 2 periods of 60
Page 4 If the test-pieces are not heated in a salt-bath, the heating time must be extended accordingly. The cut surface shall be prepared in accordance with EURONORM 4 for the Rockwell C hardness test.
4.2.4 4.3.2
The Brinell hardness test shall be carried out in accordance with EURONORM 3.
4.3.3
If the purchaser asks for a test of the surface quality, the details for sampling and for the preparation of the testpieces shall be agreed at the time of the enquiry or order. 4.2.5 General requirements for the selection and preparation of test-pieces shall be in accordance with EURONORM 18.
The Rockwell C hardness test shall be carried out in accordance with EURONORM 4.
4.3.4
If the purchaser asks for the surface quality to be tested, the test method shall be agreed at the time of the enquiry or order. 4.4 Retests For retests the appropriate paragraphs of EURONORMS 21 shall apply.
4.5 Documents
The appropriate paragraphs of EURONORMS 21 are applicable for documentation.
COMPLAINTS
For complaints and the method of dealing with them the appropriate paragraphs of EURONORMS 21 apply.

Elements no quoted in the above lble shall not be inten tionally added to the steel other than for the purpose of finishing the heat. All reasonable precautions shall be taken to prevent the addition from scrap or other materials used in manufacture, of such elements which affect the hardenability, mechanical properties and applicability. Contents of S 0.20% Cr, S 0.25% Cu and S 0 25% Ni should, how ever, be regarded as being in conformity with the above requirement. See clause 4. 2.3.

The deviations, other than when maxima only are specified, apply either above or below the specified limits of the range but not both above and below for the same element from different samples from the same cast. When maxima only are specified the deviations are positive only. The values are valid only if the samples are selected in accordance with EURONORM 18 so that they represent the average composition of the cross-section of the product.
