Introduction:
What is Labour Welfare?
Labour welfare is an important dimension of industrial relation; labour welfare includes overall welfare facilities designed to take care of well being of employee's and in order to increase their living standard. It does not generally constitute monetary benefits nor these are provided by employers alone, it can also be provided by government, non government agencies and trade unions. Industrialization, mechanization and globalization have increased importance of labour welfare in industries. The importance of labour in industrialization and economic development has been recognized globally. In global scenario need and importance of labour welfare has been increasingly appreciated.

History of Labour Welfare


In India the labour welfare started sometime during the 1st world war (1914-1918). Till then wellbeing of workers in factories was hardly thought by anybody. Since, 1st world war labour welfare has been expanding on voluntary basis. Industrial Labour Organization has played a very significant role for labour welfare. Many labour legislations have been formed by Indian central government and state governments for welfare of labours in Industries. Government has laid down minimum standards for employment and working conditions in organizations. Besides the government, the employers, trade unions and various social organizations also function as agencies for implementation of labour welfare measures. An Industrial labour organization (ILO) is an advisory body so it cannot force any country to introduce any welfare measures. The need of labour welfare was powerfully felt by the Royal Commission of Labour far back in 1931; Indian constitution emphasized this need under its directive principles of state policy.

Definition of Labour Welfare:
Labour welfare means anything done for the comfort and improvement, intellectual and social, of the employees over and above the wages paid which is not a necessity of the Industry.

According to Industrial Labour Organization (ILO) Labour welfare may be understood and including such services facilities and amenities which may be established in vicinity of undertaking to perform their work in healthy and congenial environment and to avail of facilities which improve their health and bring high morale.

Objectives of the study:


To know about the organization To know about the existing labour welfare facilities existing in the Ghatge Patil Industries Ltd. that is statutory and other To study the industrial relations To study the working conditions of the employees or the labour in the Ghatge Patil Industries Ltd. To study the satisfaction level of the employees from the various welfare facilities To suggest the ways to improve the welfare facilities provided to the employees or the labour in the Ghatge Patil Industries Ltd.

It includes the method used for the data collection for the research

Sources of the data collection: The data regarding the labour welfare facilities is collected from the following sources: Primary Sources:

The primary sources are those from which the data or the information is collected fresh and for the first time, and thus happen to be original in character. The primary sources were as follows:
Questionnaire Method The information was collected by giving questionnaire that is the list of questions to the employees.

Interview method
The personal interview was carried out with the management and the workers of the organization to collect the information and the data.

Observation
Some information and the facts were observed by the researcher himself.

Discussion
There many discussions done with management and the employees of the organization and with the human resource department.

Secondary Sources: The secondary sources are those from which the data or the information is collected by someone else and it does not happen to be original in character. The secondary sources were as follows: Companys website
The companys website was used for the data collection.

The various books and journals were referred for collecting the necessary data and the information.

The internal records of the company were used for the data collection.

Annual Reports
The internal records of the company were used for the data collection.

Scope of the study:


The study of the labour welfare facilities is limited to the Ghatge Patil Industries Ltd. Kolhapur and to only one department that is the human resource department.

Importance of Labour Welfare:


Labour welfare provides social comfort to employees. It provides intellectual improvement of employees. To develop sense of responsibility and belongingness among employees. To ensures that the working conditions for employees are of higher standard. To build stable work force. To reduce absenteeism and labour turnover. To make employees lives good and worth living. To boost productivity and efficiency at the workplace. To provide healthy and proper working conditions. To ensure well being of employees and families.

Limitation of the study:


The study is limited to the study of the labour welfare facilities is limited to the Ghatge Patil Industries Ltd. Kolhapur. The workers or the labourers might not have disclosed or expressed their real opinions or facts. Confidential information was not been provided.
