Central Historical Question:

Is it fair for modern historians to criticize early explorers as men only motivated by riches if it

Sir Walter Alexander Raleigh The English Voyages of the Sixteenth Century 1904

__________________________________________________________
Men have traveled, as they have lived, for religion, for wealth, for knowledge,
__________________________________________________________
for pleasure, for power and the overthrow of rivals. Yet as others have said, there is a single thread
__________________________________________________________
of interest running through all these pilgrimages. The discovery of the new Western World
__________________________________________________________
followed, as an incidental consequence, from the long struggle of the nations of Europe for
__________________________________________________________
commercial
supremacy and control of the traffic with the East. In all these dreams of the
__________________________________________________________
politicians
and merchants, sailors and geographers, who pushed back the limits of the unknown
world,
there is the same glitter of gold and precious stones, the same odor of far-fetched spices.
__________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________
1. According to Sir Walter Alexander Raleigh the main reason the New World was discovered was

because of explorers seeking to gain riches, not spread religion. True or False

(Standard 5) How did exploration, and its motives, create a dynamic and ever changing world?

Note that this is Sir Raleigh the Professor, not the explorer. Sir Raleigh was an English writer,
scholar and author who wrote about a number of topics including the Age Exploration as well as
World War One.
