Invitation to join the summit in the Competitive Category

Introduction
This essay competition is for young people living outside Singapore who are keen on participating in the exciting Asian Youth Energy Summit 2014 in Singapore, where they can interact with other young enthusiasts and various experts in the energy sector and learn through exciting programmes organised by Energy Carta. We are offering award winners subsidy for transportation costs to Singapore and accommodation expenses for their stay there.

Eligibility
1. Only youths who are living in the following countries are allowed to apply a. Thailand b. Malaysia c. Indonesia d. Cambodia e. Vietnam f. Laos g. Myanmar h. Brunei i. Philippines j. China k. India 2. All applicants are to be less than 30 years old at the time of January 2014

3. All applicants must not be banned from entering Singapore or any other countries before.

Essay
Write an essay of 500-1000 words on one of the topics below: Topic 1: Sustainable development in the energy sector What are some of the challenges your country face in ensuring energy reliability, efficiency and sustainability? How can we deal with these challenges? Topic 2: Combating Energy Poverty According to World Energy Outlook 2013 Electricity Database, the rural area electrification rate for South East Asia alone stands at 67.2%. This translates to approximately 134 million people without access to electricity across the SEA region. What are some of the consequences of energy poverty you can observe in Asia? How can we combat energy poverty?

Awards/ Subsidy Scheme


We are looking for students who are passionate in the energy industry and sustainable development, and show insights on such issues in their essay. The top 3 candidates will receive up to 200 Singapore Dollars upon arrival in Singapore as a subsidy for their travel. Three nights of free accommodation in Singapore will be provided from 21st (Friday) to 23rd (Sunday) March 2014. Food will also be provided. The next 13* candidates will be awarded with three nights of free accommodation in Singapore will be provided from 21st (Friday) to 23rd (Sunday) March 2014. Food will also be provided.

All candidates will get certificates of appreciation as the recognition to their contribution to the summit. Candidates who are not selected for the awards can still apply for a place in the Asian Youth Energy Summit 2014. However, candidates will need to pay for their own expenses and find their own accommodation. Results will be announced on 16 February. Note: All award winners are required to arrange their own transportation to and fro Singapore. *The final number of candidates winning the competition can be changed by the organizer without any prior notice.

Terms and Conditions for the Participants who receive subsidy


1. Energy Carta will provide you with a subsidy of the agreed amount for your flight to Singapore for the Asian Youth Energy Summit 2014. Any incremental cost above that of the subsidy will have to be paid by you. Subsidy will be done on a reimbursement basis. 2. The subsidy received cannot be exchanged in any way as cash/cheque. 3. If the grant winner decides not to come for the conference, his subsidy will be invalid and is not transferable. 4. Participants who receive the subsidy will have to book their transports (flight or other modes) themselves. However, they are required to send in the details of the flight or any other transports and get the approval from Energy Carta before proceeding to book it. This is to make sure that the participants arrive promptly for the event. 5. Reimbursement of travel cost will be done on the first day of the Asian Youth Energy. All reimbursement values will be stated in Singapore Dollars (SGD). 6. The total subsidy of the airfare will be up to a maximum of 200 SGD. For flights that cost less, only the total cost will of the flight well be covered. 7. Details will follow regarding reimbursement procedures but receipts and boarding passes (for air travel) are required. You will need to present such documents to us when you arrive in order for us to process your reimbursement. 8. Energy Carta will provide you with three nights accommodation (the night of 21 st, 22nd, and 23rd March 2014). We will not cover any additional nights that you might intend to stay or additional cost you incur. Any additional cost you incur beyond 3 nights accommodation will have to be paid by you. Accommodation details are subjected to changes. 9. Energy Carta will cover the food costs for two breakfasts (22 nd and 23rd morning) and two dinners (22nd and 23rd dinner). Two lunches will also be covered as part of the event itself. 10. Energy Carta reserves the right to change or reject any reimbursements should we discover that the receipts/boarding passes are inaccurate or false. 11. Energy Carta reserves the right to change or reject any reimbursements should we discover that you have failed to meet your obligations or have acted in a manner that is deemed inappropriate by us.
