Rules for Kubb

Idea of the game
Each of two teams tries to knock out all the "Kubbs" on the other teams' half of the field to win them over, and finally to knock out the "King" standing in the middle. The two teams take turns in throwing "throwing sticks" at the Kubbs.

Who starts?
After setting up the pieces on the lawn, the two teams take turns to throw 3 throwing sticks each from their own base line to land as close as possible to the King. The team who ends up with the stick closest to the King without knocking him down starts (Team 1).

First round
The members of Team 1 share the 6 sticks as evenly as possible between them. The 6 sticks are thrown one at a time from the "casting line", which in this first round is identical to their base line, to try knock down the 5 Kubbs at the base line of Team 2. Only if all the Kubbs at the other teams' side are knocked down, the King may be (and shall be) knocked down (if there are any throwing sticks left). If the King is knocked down too early, the other team immediately wins the game. Usually, Team 1 does not succed to win in the first round, and Team 2 may start the second round.

Second round
Team 2 starts by collecting the Kubbs that were knocked down (won) by Team 1. Then they throw these fallen Kubbs from their base line across the middle line to land on the half of the field belonging to Team 1. If they fail with a throw they have two more chances. If, after three attempts, the Kubb is still not on the half field of Team 1, Team 1 may decide where it shall be (at least 1 Kubb length from the King, however). It is tactically important where the Kubbs land: a) If they land close together it may be possible to knock more than one of them down with a single throw later in the game. b) If they land too close to the King it will be difficult to knock them down without knocking down the King too early and suddenly lose the game. c) If they land close to the middle line they will be easier to knock down later. d) But if Team 2 fails to knock them down in the same round, the foremost one of them will mark the casting line for Team 1 in the third round. Now Team 1 must stand the Kubbs which have been thrown on end. From where each Kubb lies, they may chose to stand it on one end or the other. Here Team 1 has a chance to be tactical. Finally Team 2 throws the throwing sticks one at a time from their casting line, which in this their first round is the base line, to knock down as many as possible of the Kubbs of Team 1. It is usually a good idea to get the nearest ones first, since the foremost standing Kubb will mark the casting line for Team 1 in the following round.

From here on the teams take turns with the rounds like in round 2 to try to win over all the Kubbs of the opposing team and then finally to knock down the King. The casting line is the foremost standing Kubb at your own side. When throwing at the King, and also when throwing Kubbs across to the other side one always has to stand behind the base line, however.

Winner
The winner is the team which fells all the Kubbs of the other team and finally the King from the base line. Alternatively you win if the opposing team knocks down the King too early. The sketch below shows the situation when Team 1 ("Lag 1" which seems to be at a slight disadvantage at the moment) is about to start to throw from their casting line ("kastlinje"):

The King is always in the center of the field.

Optional rule:
There is often a rule that the throwing sticks have to be thrown by an "underhand throw" and not horizontally ("helicopter throw").
