MARCH

However, despite the origins of the word, on Shrove Tuesday, many Christians make a special point of selfexamination, considering what wrongs they need to repent for, and what amendments of life or areas of spiritual growth they especially need to ask Gods help in dealing with. Often they consult on these matters with a spiritual counselor or receive shrift. Shrove Tuesday is also called Fat Tuesday because on that day a thrifty housewife uses up the fats that she has kept around (the can of bacon drippings, or whatever) for cooking, but that she will not be using during Lent. Since pancakes are/were a standard way of using up fat, the day is also called Pancake Tuesday note: I do not use bacon fat for my pancakes, or anything else for that matter. Seriously though, my prayer for us all is that we truly take the opportunity of Lent as a blessed gift. Time set apart from the rest of the year to especially reflect on the grace that flows so freely through our lives. May the peace of the season rest upon all! Pastor Roger

Lenten Journey-2014
Writer, activist, and doyenne of ONEHANDCLAPPING, Julie Clawson shared this thought about Lent in a recent blog, Lent isnt about denial, it is about transformation. It is the season in which we prepare to encounter Christs sacrifice by endeavoring to become more Christ like ourselves. Transformation is about letting ourselves be filled with Gods presence so that we can be shaped by Gods grace. Transformation, this is the sentiment, the guiding principle woven through all of the messages, themes, and worship services for the past eight months. As we move into the Lenten Season, transformationfrom the Latin word, trnsfrmre, meaning to change in shaperemains the spiritual destination we journey towards with Jesus. Ironically, some of the most vivid, Biblical descriptions we have of Jesus come during his struggles to transform; to change, to move beyond the conventions of this world and perfect himself as the embodiment of God among us. Without exception, the gospel writers place these powerful moments as occurring during a period of intense prayer and contemplationin the desert, on the mountain, and finally, in the Gethsemane garden. Lenten season 2014, you are invited to continue on the journey toward spiritual transformation, to let yourself experience Gods presence through the act of committed attention; of finding more space in your life to gather with others for prayer and contemplation of what it means to be a disciple of The Way. Total time from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday? 1,104 hours. Total additional time given over to God? 16 hours. Rewards? Immeasurable. This year for Lent, give your attention, not your chocolate, to God.

March 2014

Our Mission: Seek God; Support each other; Serve the world !

My Fellow Travelers, The Lenten season is nearly upon us leading us on our annual 40 day journey to Easter Sunday. That is to say 40 days not counting Sundays which are traditionally considered miniEasters. The Sundays of Lent are intended to be days when the sack-cloth and ashes of Lent are set aside and people can relax and celebrate. Traditionally on Sundays the Lenten Fasts may be broken. As I know of few who keep to such practices and only a small handful who still think about what they are giving up for Lent much of this is pretty meaningless. When I was growing up my fathers side of the family largely did follow the practice of giving something up for Lent. While only a few were practicing Roman Catholics the traditions of the church run deep in an Scott-Irish family. We did, however, gather every Friday during Lent for my grandmothers (in)famous fish fry dinners (Seneca Lake Trout and home-fried potatoes fried in butter and lard, thank you!) My mothers mother would go into a good old Lutheran rage at even the mention of such abominations the abomination was not so much the act in and of itself but rather the idea of performing so obvious a Catholic practice. Easter is a little later this year than last. Easter is a moving target because the early church thought that as Jesus was crucified early during Passover Easter should come early in the season of Passover. Passover is determined according to the Jewish lunar calender and therefore begins on different Julian calendar dates each year. I used to think that Easter was the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. This applies most years but every once in a while, the astronomical full moon (the moon you see at night) differs by a few days from the calculated full moon date further complicated by differences in traditional Jewish and non-Jewish calculation methods. There are two other ways to determine the exact date of Easter. One requires the use of an HP Scientific Calculator and a fairly complex equation. As I have never been able to conquer the HP Scientific Calculator and would have to look up the equation, this method is essentially useless. The other method is to look the date up in the United Methodist Book of Worship. A preferred method however, as nearly every kitchen calendar has the date, we can abandon any attempt to calculate such things. Ash Wednesday is March 5th this year. We will gather for worship at 6:00 pm in the chapel. New for this year we are going to hold weekly prayer services on Wednesday evenings, 6:00 pm. We will again offer small group study opportunities for people who wish to add something special to their Lenten journey. We will also set aside the time between sun set on Good Friday and sun rise Easter morning for contemplative prayer. Lent will come to an end with the grand celebration of Easter Sunday, April 20th at 10:00 am. This year we all have an opportunity to re-discover the traditional Shove Tuesday pancake supper. Supper will be available beginning at 5:00 pm. A freewill offering will be received. A bit of Fat Tuesday/Shove Tuesday trivia: The day before the beginning of Lent is known as Shrove Tuesday. To shrive someone in old-fashioned English (he shrives, he shrove, he has shriven or he shrives, he shrived, he has shrived) is to hear his acknowledgment of his sins, to assure him of Gods forgiveness, and to give him appropriate spiritual advice. The term survives today in ordinary usage in the expression short shrift. To give someone short shrift is to pay very little attention to his excuses or problems. The longer expression is, to give him short shrift and a long rope, which formerly meant to hang a criminal with a minimum of delay hardly an Easter-like sentiment!

Welcome to Rita Clark who joins your Finance Team as a new member. And to Judy Jansen who embraces parcipaon on this team as part of her Lay Speaker dues. We are excited to have the rich experience each of these women brings to our deliberaons. Making Ministry Possible Your pledge makes a dierence. The church can only do what its membership makes possible, that is, Newark First United Methodist can only do what the me, talent, and treasure we each share make possible. So, as we do every year, we asked everyone who calls FUMC their church home and who believes in the vision and mission of this great spiritual community to make a nancial commitment. These are the results of last fall's campaign. 76 givers pledged $159,525.24. We gained some pledges and lost some for a net gain of four. The total dollar volume shows a loss of $12,000. We nished scal year 2013 with a small posive balance. We are in a strong posion as we move into the rst quarter of 2014. Our budget is the same with a 2% increase in sta salaries. God is good and has blessed us with faithful people who willingly and gladly share of their me, their treasure, and their talent for the work of the church here in downtown Newark, around the country, and yes, even across the globe. Bless you! Foundaon Special Distribuon You will recall that the Foundaon, through God's blessing, was able to make a special distribuon of $40,000 to the congregaon. The Finance Team created a means whereby this gi could be requested and used to further the mission of our church. A form exists and can be requested from the oce if you have an idea to consider. We welcome you to do so. To date, these are the projects and acvies that the Finance Team has considered and approved. On the sixth day, God turned to Archangel Gabriel and said, "Today I am going to create an area of land called Upstate New York. It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty. It shall have tall hills and rolling plains full of game and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and streams full of trout, forests full of deer and turkeys, valleys with fertile soil with an abundance of nutrients to grow things, and rivers teeming with ish." God continued, "I shall make the land rich in resources so as to make the inhabitants prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Upstaters, and they shall be known as the most friendly people on the earth." "But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generous to these Upstaters?? "Not really," replied God. "Just wait and see the winters I am going to give them!"

2014 FLOWER CHART

Please consider donating flowers for the altar. They may be ordered from a local florist or picked from your own garden. There are many availabilities during 2014. Flowers are another way we add beauty to our worship services. They may be given in memory or honor of someone, for a birthday or anniversary, or simply in appreciation of our church family or your love of God. Won't you please take a look at the chart that is hanging in the main hallway and see what dates may be of significance to you?

This is an item I found amongst my mothers things which she often referred to. I am sharing it with all of our congregation to use during this Lenten Season.

Response Magazine
The February edition of the Response Magazine has a very interesting article about Prayer and Self Denial. Judy Jansen conducts this program every year but here is some information that you may not have been aware of. The Call to Prayer and Self Denial follows a four year cycle. The first year the offering supports programs in the UMW related mission institutions. In year two, the offering addresses a special issue identified by UMW national directors. The third year, the offering goes toward the buildings and property of the UMW mission institutions. And in the fourth year of the cycle, the offering provides for the pensions of retired United Methodist deaconesses and missionaries. In 2014 all of the money that we gave at our January Circle meeting went towards buildings and property. Next year we will be in the fourth year of the cycle. For more information, read the entire article of the February Response Magazine.

I found this while browsing the internet. This was created by a woman by the name of Catherine Fournier. I hope you enjoy completing this.

Mission Team Report:

Mission Team Leader: Mary Jane Young Members: Karen Botcher, Norma Walters, and Lucina Hallagan

Our missions for the month of March is for the corp of emergency teams we have in our vicinity. First of all, we have Mercy Flight . They have a fleet of helicopters and turbo prop planes, outfitted with advanced medical equipment to ensure our patients have the best of care possible during their journey to other facilities. They have critical care teams which consists of nurses, paramedics and medical control physicians to ensure the best care of the patients. This is an independent nonprofit organization of medical professionals. They are on call 24 hours a day. Newark-Arcadia Volunteer Ambulance (NAVA), this is an emergency medical service committed to providing the highest quality emergency care and transport available to our community. NAVA began operation as a community based volunteer agency on July 1, 1977. In 2011 they reorganized their group with a paid administrater to oversee the day to day operations. The NAVA fleet consists of three modern, well equipped ambulances that meet the strict criteria set forth by NYSD of Health. They also have a fly car. The purpose of the fly car is to transport the ALS Paramedic to the scene to evaluate and treat the patient Our next organization that we contribute to is the Newark Volunteer Fire Department. This is a 100% volunteer Fire Department. These dedicated volunteers are always on call 24 hours a day to answer calls for fire, disasters, floods and other emergencies. These people put in countless hours of training that takes them away from their families so that they are well prepared to assist in any emergency situation to keep your families safe. We are also very thankful for the education they give to our school children about safety. Mission Project

Churches Reaping Benefits from Member Shopping Habits --UMC Market Deemed Successful in First Year Nashville, TN The General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA), in conjunction with Zebraplace, launched UMCmarket.org in July 2013. UMCmarket.org is an online shopping service specifically designed for members of The United Methodist Church to shop at hundreds of well-known and respected retailers and get a percentage of their total shopping purchase donated to the local church or other Church organizations of their choice. The year developed well and finished strong for the program. Since July, 2013, 2,570 United Methodist churches have participated in the program and received donations. Between July 1 and November 30 of last year, nearly $23,000 was donated back to local churches and other United Methodist organizations. In December alone, nearly $26,000 was donated back as church members used the online service at years end. Bobby Lee Smith, Manager of Corporate Partnership and Philanthropic Initiatives at GCFA said We are encouraged by the results from 2013. The goal of this initiative is to provide ministry monies for churches in unconventional ways and where they might not have existed before. We are hearing stories from church members across the connection that they are providing resources for the church in an innovative way. We look forward to this program growing. It is encouraging to see comments from users that tell us This is a very good program. I use it and already [weve] received money back, and to hear how just regular online shopping can make a difference to the church. We encourage everyone to search the list of stores at UMCmarket.org and see how they, too, can take advantage of receiving donations to their United Methodist organization or church. The upcoming Valentines Day is an excellent time to consider shopping online for gifts and travel. By using UMCMarket.org, members of The United Methodist Church have the opportunity to select items and generate a micro-donation to the local church or United Methodist organization of their choice. UMCMarket.org is under constant review and revision to assure the best shopping experience and to assure that donations are credited back to churches and organizations regularly. You can follow, like, send comments and share with your family and friends at UMCmarket.org on Facebook. #####
