Platform Vision Architectural Model

Virtualization
The end-to-end Virtualization solution pattern encompasses server, desktop, presentation, and application virtualization. Among other things, the Virtualization solution pattern supports server consolidation, application compatibility, and application provisioning on demand and in real time.

The Virtualization solution pattern interacts with nearly every other solution pattern. With management and monitoring in place, the Virtualization solution pattern covers ways to improve physical resources utilization and enable dynamic provisioning. In the platform context, this solution pattern highlights simplified development and testing environments, server consolidation, business continuity and disaster recovery at lower cost, improved security, and consistent user experience. With common deployment, provisioning, and monitoring tools, a Virtualization solution enables centralized, policy-based management of virtual and physical resources with granular control over backup and recovery. Stage 3: Automated Infrastructure

Presentation Virtualization

The Automated Infrastructure stage is reached when the physical servers that remain in the data center do so as virtualization host servers or due to business solution requirements. Additional servers may exist due to hardware requirements such as connectivity to external devices that can not be virtualized. All other servers exist virtually and perform within established SLAs. At this stage, IT approaches desktop, presentation and application virtualization equally when considering business requirements. Virtualization solutions are deployed based on required technical or management requirements. Virtual server platform alignment is tightly tied to monitoring and management at this stage and is completely automated. The datacenter is considered a unified resource with virtual servers capable of movement from one physical host server to another based on resource requirements. IT process solutions at this stage, such as architectural design, integrate business needs with virtual solutions to ensure technical requirements are met efficiently while maintaining the established SLA. At this stage, virtualization solutions allow operating systems and applications to operate independently. This decoupling allows servers and applications to run at geographic locations that best balance SLA performance and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Stage 2: Intelligent Infrastructure

Data and Management
The process of consolidating physical servers continues in the Intelligent Infrastructure stage with fully developed IT processes such as change control and configuration management. Virtualized servers are implemented to deliver off-site disaster recovery functionality as well as business continuity solutions such as on-line hot spares. At this stage, IT deploys desktop virtualization universally based on user role and implements presentation virtualization to tactically address specific business initiatives. Platform alignment ensures that the virtual servers and physical servers are managed identically. Virtualization management teams, if existing, are integrated in to the primary infrastructure team. To align with the platform, IT should monitor and manage presentation virtualization using the same tools and processes as virtualized servers. At this stage, IT should align with the business, as decisions regarding implementation opportunities are prioritized based on strategic goals and objectives. Projects to virtualize the entire data center are ongoing and include targeted completion dates along with established Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to ensure the shift to virtualization doesnt impact the business.

Stage 1: Efficient Infrastructure

At the Efficient Infrastructure stage, IT uses server virtualization to consolidate physical data center servers as well as virtualize desktops to create development or test environments and enhance training solutions. At this stage, IT can use tactical implementations of virtualization to address immediate needs. To be aligned with the platform, IT should manage and monitor virtualized servers with the same solutions as the physical servers. However, these solutions must be capable of fully automating management of all virtual instances based on monitoring events. A tactical team may be responsible for deploying and maintaining the virtual servers. As virtualization solutions are implemented, IT should identify opportunities to link existing IT process solutions such as change control and configuration management to the deployment and update of instances. Additionally, IT can investigate other virtualization solutions at this stage, but only for testing or as proofs of concept.

IT Process
Advaiya Platform Vision organizes the IT infrastructure into a series of solution patterns that interconnect traditional IT service offerings. Advaiya solution patterns put traditional IT services in the context of their relationships with other services over time as part of a comprehensive platform solution. This contextual information helps IT leaders to identify and build strategic platform-based solutions that align with organizational business goals and maximize the impact of IT investments. The Advaiya Platform Vision cone model represents the entire IT infrastructure platform wrapped around line-of-business core functionality. The model comprises a group of solution patterns that together represent an entire platform. As individual components, the solution patterns show service relationships and how they contribute to the platform.
