How data mining application can be utilized in construction project?

Based on article Application of Data Warehouse and Data Mining in Construction Management by Jianping ZHANG, all construction projects are constrained by their schedules, specifications and budgets, environmental regulations and also safety. These constraints will make management of the construction become more complex and difficult. But, at the same time, historical data can support the decisions in future that are kept in construction enterprise. When apply the data warehouse and data mining technologies, using historical data become more effectively and efficiently. For example, in China, many construction projects have large scales and complex structures. The management of these projects involves many labors, equipments and finance, materials also machineries. So, Chinese construction enterprises must apply the latest information technology in the management of construction projects, aiming at the enterprises information management system. Managers can analyze the enterprises working state and forecast its development with the help of this management system. Information technology must be applied to each step in the management of enterprise to improve the decision-making ability of an enterprise. It is include the automation of collection, management, utilization of information and analysis. Enterprises can accumulate valuable historic data during the construction management process. The key to help managers to make decisions is how to organize and analyze these data. The development of data-warehouse (DW) and data-mining (DM) technology offers possible solution to these problems.

Based on article Improving The Management of Building Life Cycle: A Data Mining Approach by Rabee M. Reffat, John S. Gero and Wei Peng, the construction industry has adapted information technology in its processes in terms of computer aided design and drafting, maintenance and construction documentation. In industry, data generated has become increasingly overwhelming. To discover patterns and correlations within a large volume of data, data mining can be use that capable to search the information needed. This article presents the selection and application of data mining techniques on maintenance data of buildings. The result of applying such techniques and potential benefits of utilizing their result to identify useful patterns of knowledge and correlations to support decision making of improving the management of building life cycle are presented and discussed. The growth of government, business and scientific databases has begun to far outpace our ability and digest this data. When high degree of complexity of work flow is taken into account in the decision making process during the lifetime of a building, this issue becomes critical. Traditional methods of data analysis such as spreadsheets and ad-hoc queries are not adequate since they can only create informative reports from data, but cannot analyze the contents of the reports. Tools that allow identification of valid, useful and previously unknown patterns so that building managers can analyze a large amount of project data is Data Mining (DM). To improve the management and maintenance of existing facilities and the design new facilities, apply data mining techniques to the records of existing facilities has the potential. So, this will lead to more efficient and effective facilities maintenance and management through better planning based on models developed from available maintenance data, resulting in a more economical life cycle of buildings. Beside, by utilizing appropriate techniques of information technology at their workplace, designers and maintenance managers will be better equipped.
