Tempered Spring Steel Wire

1. This specification covers a commercial grade of oil tempered spring steel for manufacture of mechanical springs.

2. STEEL MANUFACTURE This steel is to be made according to approved practice by the electric furnace or open hearth process.

3. CHEMICAL ANALYSIS The chemical analysis shall be either A or B depending upon the finished wire diameter. Carbon Manganese Phosphorus Sulphur Silicon .60 .71 .80 1.10 .04 max. .05 max. .15 .30

.60.71 .60.90 .04 max. .05 max. .15 .30

Composition A shall be supplied for all wire .1875* diameter and larger, and composition B shall be supplied for all wire less than .1875* diameter, unless otherwise specified on the purchase order.

4. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Wire under .250* diameter shall wind on itself as an arbor without breaking or checking the surface. Wire over .250* diameter shall wind on an arbor twice the diameter of the wire without breaking or checking the surface. The wire shall not show a coarse or cuppy condition when subjected to a fracture test. The wire must be within the following range of tensile strengths.

5. SURFACE CONDITION The surface of the wire as received shall be free from rust or excessive scale. The wire shall be uniform in quality and in hardness, and shall not be wavy nor crooked. The surface of wire shall be free from deep scratches, excessive seams, pits, or roiled-in scale. These defects may be revealed by any recognized method. Wire with seams of a depth exceeding 3^% of the diameter, or a depth of .010* whichever is the smaller, shall be subject to rejection. If such defects are found upon inspection of 10% of a shipment, inspection will be made of 50% of that shipment, and if such defects are found general throughout the 50%, the entire shipment will be rejected. Any wire in which cross-checks or quench cracks of any depth are found in the material as received, will be rejected. Inspection will be made of 10% of each shipment, but not less than four bundles. If crosschecks or quench cracks are found in any of the bundles inspected, the entire shipment will be rejected. Surface decarburization shall be kept to the minimum depth consistent with a commercial material of this quality. 6. SIZE VARIATION LIMITS The diameter of the material in the form of round wire shall not vary from the mean nominal dimension by more than the following limits.
Size Limit*

.027 and smaller Plus or minus .00075' .075 to .028 incl. Plus or minus .001' .374 to .076 incl. Plus or minus .002' .375 and larger Plus or minus .003' The wire shall not be out-of-round by more than one-half the total permissible size tolerance. In the event special tolerances are desired, limits as specified on the purchase order shall supersede this table. 7. WEIGHT AND SIZE OF BUNDLES The diameter of the bundle, for any size of material furnished to this specification, shall be sufficiently large that when the wire is released from the bundle it is straight within 1* maximum camber in any length of eight feet. The weight of bundles shall be in accordance with standard mill practice unless a minimum weight is specified on the purchase order.

8. INSPECTION, REJECTION AND REPLACEMENT The manufacturer shall afford the inspector representing the purchaser all reasonable facilities, without charge, to satisfy him that the material is being furnished in accordance with these specifications. All tests (except check analysis) and inspection may be made at the place of manufacture prior to shipment, and shall be so conducted as not to interfere unnecessarily with the operation of the works. Unless otherwise specified, any rejection based on tests made in accordance with these specifications shall be reported to the manufacturer within a reasonable length of time. All rejected material shall be held at the manufacturer's risk, subject to his instructions, and shall be replaced by the manufacturer without further cost to the purchaser. 9. SIMILAR SPECIFICATIONS Wire to this specification may be used for S.A.E. 1065, S.A.E. 1066, A.S.T.M. A229-41, Army 48-6 or 48-7A, Air Corps 10276 B, Federal QQW-465 and QQW-474, GM-61M, and M S 479 Chrysler, and G.E. B4E7-S2.
