COMPANY OVERVIEW
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, industry in the UK has been required by law to ensure safety in the workplace. At present there are over 366 Acts and Regulations that lay down the duties of employers, employees, manufactures and suppliers in matters of health and safety. Equipment used at work for lifting, lowering and suspending loads requires careful consideration in its selection, use, maintenance and periodic examination. Current UK legislation in the form of The Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) and The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) place stringent responsibilities on owners and users of such equipment.

SLING ANGLES

Lifting Equipment Engineers Association

Sling Angles When lifting with multi-leg slings, they are rated at a certain tonnage from 0 to 90 and this SWL should NOT be exceeded even if the angle is less than 90. When using single slings in pairs however, you must always be aware of the increased loadings in the slings when lifting at an angle.

90 120

For the above reason, the SWL of a pair of single slings decreases as the angle between them increases as shown below:

WIRE ROPES

Lifting Equipment Engineers Association

GENERAL INFORMATION ON WIRE ROPES

Steel Wire Ropes are one of the most important and most heavily strained elements in the range of hauling technology. The diffenet operating conditions require a careful selection from the numerous makes of rope. The steel wire ropes specified in our catalogue are employed for general purposes, especially for - lifting and conveying equipment - navigation - the mining industry (with the exeption of winding ropes) From our wide range of products we selected the ones most widely used. We can manufacture all types of constructions with round wires and round strands. In general practice, there is widespread ignorance of the characteristic properties of wire ropes and the most important demands made of them. Safety in operation and smooth working process can only be guaranteed if the operating and monitoring personnel of an enterprise are familiar with all important problems of use, maintenance and inspection of wire ropes. It is advantageous for both the design engineer and the user to familiarize themselves with the basic principles of wire ropes. Wire ropes and a strong carrying power. Apart from symptoms of use, such as wear, fatigue and corrosion, the loss of strength of wire ropes caused by ageing and humidity is insignificant. As the load is divided onto numerous single wires, the wire rope is extremely safe. Wire ropes can be used at high working speeds; they run quietly and they have a very good ratio of lifting power to unloaden weight. During operation they can be easily maintained and checked. In respect to the durability of the core, a wire rope with a fibre core should not be used at temperatures of more than 100oC. Ropes with a steel core can work at temperatures up to 250oC. At high and low temperatures it is important to check that the end fitting is suitable for such temperatures.

CLASSIFICATION OF ROPES ACCORDING TO USE

Running Ropes These are ropes which run over rollers, pulleys and drums, thus adapting themselves to the curvatures. e.g. lift ropes, hoisting ropes, crane ropes, scraper ropes and haulage ropes for cableways. Stationary Ropes Stationary ropes are ropes which are for the most part firmly clamped and not moved over rollers. e.g. anchoring ropes for masts and booms, guide cables for lifts. Carrying Ropes Carrying ropes are ropes on which rolls of conveying devices run. Their function is similar to that of running rails. e.g. carrying ropes for cableways, cable cranes, gravity return scrapers. Lifting Slings Lifting slings are used for suspending loads. Wire Rope Constructions Rope Wire We use rope wire as round steel wire in accordance with EN 10264-3 with nominal tensile strengths of 1570 N/mm (160 kp/mm), 1770 N/mm (180kp/mm), 1960 N/mm (200 kp/mm) and 2160 N/mm (220 kp/mm). The surface of these wires is bright (U), drawn galvanized(B), or heavily galvanized (A). Strands Construction of Strands A strand consists of one or several layers of rope wires, spirally wound round a core. This core consists of one or several rounds of profiled wires or of a fibre core. Direction of Lay The direction of lay of a strand is the direction of the helical line of the rope wire. There are strands with right-hand lay (z) and left-hand lay (s). left-hand lay right-hand lay

Types of Lay of Wires in Strands

12

CONSTRUCTION OF ROPES

Lifting Equipment Engineers Association

Construction of Ropes Ropes can be in single (spiral wire ropes) and in multiple stranding (stranded ropes). A spiral wire rope consists of one or several layers of wires partly with right-hand lay, partly with left-hand lay, which are wound helically round a core wire. Their structure therefore resembles in principle that of a round strand. In general, the stranded rope consists of one or several layers of strands. The strands are helically wound round a core. This core can either be a fibre core or a core of stranded wires (steel core). In particular cases, the steel core is braided or jacketed. Cores are available in the following versions: Fibre cores (symbol FC): - natural fibre core (NFC) or - synthetic fibre core (SFC) Steel cores (symbol WC): - steel strand core (WSC) or - steel rope core (IWRC). The outer strands of a wire rope are usually stranded round the core in a separate operation, whereby crossings are informed in a steel core between the steel core and the outer strands.

Wire Rope with a Wire Strand Core (WSC)

Wire Rope with an Independent Wire Rope Core (WRC)

Direction of Lay The direction of lay (direction of turn) of a rope is the direction of the helical line of the outer strands. One distinguishes between ropes with right-hand lay (symbol Z) and ropes with left-hand lay (symbol S).

13

TYPES OF LAY

Lifting Equipment Engineers Association

Types of Lay Long Lay The wires in the strands have the same direction of lay as the strands in the rope, Thus zZ or sS. Ordinary Lay The wires in the strands are laid in the opposite direction of lay as the strands in the rope, thus sZ or zS. If there are no special requirements, the wire ropes are delivered with; Ordinary lay, right sZ. Should a different direction of lay be required, please use the following specifications:

Important: For the use of right-hand lay ropes, the following rules apply for the position of the rope on the drum:

right-hand lay rope on left-hand drum

Upward rotation

from left to right - put on right-hand lay rope Z

from right to left - put on left-hand lay rope S

Standard type of lay Ordinary lay, right EN-symbol sZ left-hand lay rope on right-hand drum

Downward rotation

Possible types of lay on request

from right to left - put on right-hand lay rope Z

from left to right - put on left-hand lay rope S

Ordinary lay, left EN-symbol zS

Long lay, right EN-symbol zZ

Long lay, left EN-symbol sS

Length of Lay The length of lay of a certain strand layer in a wire rope is the pitch of the helically laid strands of this layer.

MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

Lifting Equipment Engineers Association

Maintenance and Inspection The cable drive should be serviced and checked regularly. In many cases, the type of inspection is fixed by regulations, standards, and guidelines (e.g. DIN 15020, BO seil etc.). The type of inspection and the observations should be recorded in an inspection book (crane book, lift book). Maintenance and inspection include: lubrication as well as checking the ropes, end connections, pulleys, rollers and drums. Lubrication Lubricated ropes should be relubricated in order to reduce the inner and outer friction. Relubrication can either be made manually or by automatic lubrication equipment from time to time. Ropes running over rollers are best lubricated with oil. The oil should be applied to the bend of the rope over the rollers, because the grease penetrates best to the rope interior at these points. Ropes not running over rollers can also be relubricated with rope grease. Running ropes should be cleaned occasionally because residual grease hardened by dust prevents the penetration of the new grease into the inside of the rope. Fixed ropes can be protected against corrosion by grease or anticorrosive agents. With rubber-lined rollers, please make sure that the rubber is not destroyed by the grease. Checking the Rope for Wire Breakage, Wear and Tear and Corrosion The entire length of the rope should be checked periodically for wire breakage, wear and tear, corrosion, and deformation, especially the parts running over rollers and the end connections. The rope should be exchanged as soon as the prescribed number of admissible wire breakages, the admissible wear and tear, corrosion, working period, hauling output, etc. is reached. Checking the End Connections Spliced end connections should be checked DIAGRAM for wire breakage and possible slipping of the insert strands. Casted rope ends should be checked from time to time for wire breakages and corrosion close to their exit from cast metal. As soon as wire breakages or corrosion appear, the end must be cut off and the casting renewed. For certain operations, the operating specifications (e.g. BO Seil at cableways) determine that the cast heads must be periodically cut off and renewed by new casting.

Detachable end connections (thimbles, rope clip etc.) must be checked for wire breakages and possible slipping. Operating specifications may also specify here that the clip connections are to be renewed at certain intervals. Pressed connections must be checked for wire breakages, cracks in the pressed sleeves and possible rope slipping. Checking the Drums and Rollers, as well as Checking the Position of the Rope on Drums and Rollers The rollers must turn easily in their bearings. Stiff or sluggish rollers lead to uncontrollable tensile powers which can reach the ropes breaking force. Moreover they increase the wear and tear of the rollers and the rope. The operational reliability of the ropes can be judged according to the following criteria: - type and number of wire breakages - position of wire breakages - time sequence of the occurrence of wire breakages - reduction of the wire rope diameter during the service life - corrosion - abrasion - rope deformation - influence of heat - service life The point of replacement of the wire rope is described in greater detail in DIN 15020 leaf 2. Maintenance, inspection and point of replacement are described in DIN 15020 leaf 2 and VDI 2358. Please also observe the regulations of local authorities or trade associations. They will also comment on rope damage and its possible cause.

CRANE AND FORK ATTACHMENTS Rope & Sling Specialists can offer a wider range of attachments to suit cranes, forklift trucks & telehandlers. The range includes but is not limited to the products shown below:

Lifting Equipment Engineers Association

UNIVERSAL ACCESS PLATFORM For a maximum of 2 persons and their tools. Net load 250kg, width 1140mm, length 1200mm, suitable for use with forklift truck or crane. Equipped as standard, with practical tool tray, four crane lugs (no chain) and entrance door on side. Built in conformance with the official labour safety regulations.

CIRCULAR MUCK SKIP The traditional skip used for muck and waste removal. Fitted with two safety catches. When the safety catches are disengaged by hand the skip will empty automatically in response to the centre of gravity of the bale arm.

SKIP LIFTING CRADLE Designed as a safe method of lifting 6 and 8 yard builders skips, on site. The skip is lifted at the base rather than using the lifting lugs which may not be tested. Complete cradle tested to SWL 12 tonnes.

FORKLIFTABLE ACCESS PLATFORM Fork mounted access platforms are a proven and safe method for which to carry out routine maintenance, inspection and stock-taking.

38

CRANE AND FORK ATTACHMENTS

GAS BOTTLE CARRIER A safer method of transporting gas bottles on site. Comes with lifting eye, and base mounted fork channels. Fully approved and tested and can be used with either forklift or crane. Holds up to six standard oxygen bottles. Fully enclosed for safety with additional secondary safety device.

Lifting Equipment Engineers Association

BLOCK GRAB Specially designed scissor grab to lift palletised blocks and bricks (note: materials must be securely bound). Suitable for handling all types of concrete products such as slabs, steel strapped bricks, blocks, kerb stones and paving blocks. Fitted with an automatic open/close device that enables a single operator to stack or unstack palletised bound loads. Lined with hard rubber pads to minimise damage to load.

SELF-LEVELLING CRANE FORKS Designed for crane lifting of brick packs and pallets, with adjustable forks. These forks have the advantage of a spring loaded lifting eye which automatically adjusts to compensate for the different weights carried. This ensures that the crane fork stays level, both when empty or full. Fitted with frame to allow attachment of a safety net.

FORK MOUNTED EXTENDING JIB Fork mounted Extending Jibs are specifically designed to convert a forklift truck into a long reach mobile crane. Allowing considerable flexibility to reach and transport particularly long and awkward loads

These attachments allow for safe, fast and reliable movement of goods on site.

HYDRAULIC EQUIPMENT
Rope & Sling Specialists Ltd offer a comprehensive range of hydraulic equipment to aid with lifting & pulling heavy loads. Our range includes Hydraulic Jacks, Manual & Power Driven Pumps, Cylinders, Spreader Wedges and many more. We can offer advice on planning the lift and what equipment would best be suited. Below is just a small proportion of the kit we have available. Please contact us for further information or advice. MANUAL AND FOOT PUMPS EPP hand pumps are very light- weight and on some models their weight is over 50% less when compared to traditional products. EPP hand pumps deliver exceptional volumes of oil per stroke and require very low handle effort even at maximum working pressure. They are made from light alloy metal normally used in the aviation industry and have excellent durability and mechanical resistance. PL pumps can work vertically with the pumping head pointing downward.
