Boer War in South Africa. One of the main aspects of imperialism was that European nations would take over African land, so showing British soldiers going to war in South Africa clearly glorifies imperialism.

The men are clearly casted in the role as masculine heroes, both in their eyes, and in the eyes of civilians. You can see this in the painting because the men are the center of attention. Their masculinity stands out especially in their pose and gun position. I think there are many factors that drove the Europeans sense of superiority. First of all, European society, and the world in general, was generally very racist at this time. Slavery had occurred in the world at this point so there was already the general thought of superiority. Also, better weapons and advanced governments and society could have promoted the ideas as well. This painting fits with Kiplings description with the White Mans Burden because it shows that the British were more a more civilized people. They had proper uniforms and superior weapons.

amount of time out of the fear that there would be no land left for the Europeans to claim. As some countries were starting to imperialize, others wanted to get involved before it was too late, and before long all of Africa was imperialized.

This swift take over by the Europeans affected the culture and people of Africa in a negative way. It caused much conflict within the native people as the Europeans tried to civilize the natives. The Europeans established new political, social, cultural, and ethnic divisions among the African natives. Also, as the Europeans kept claiming more land, the natives were split apart from their families and tribes. There are many similarities between the Second Map and the other two maps. The Second Map tells us how the Europeans took over the African land and effectively destroyed whatever African civilization there was. After establishing new trade routes and new territories, there it looked very different from the first map that showed the boundaries and territories set by the natives. The third map shows the new division that occurred because of the new trade routes and territories created by the Europeans. These maps help explain problems experienced by Africans after decolonization occurred by showing the new boundaries and territories created by the European imperialism. These new divisions altered the African life, destroying families and tribes.
