With the partial unveiling of a new state
standardized test in Medford Public Schools
coming in the next few weeks, the school dis-
trict is preparing to make sure things go as
smoothly as possible.
Classes at Medford Memorial Middle
School and Chairville Elementary School
will partake in a field test of the PARCC as-
sessment. All schools in New Jersey are
switching to the new assessment in the 2014-
15 school year. To prepare, Medford Memori-
al and Chairville were designated by the De-
partment of Education to take the field test.
According to Director of Curriculum
Thomas Olson, a lot of time and resources
have been poured into the field test as well
as the full test next year. Major changes have
been made to the districts curriculum and
technology.
Weve had to adjust our programming
and instruction to Common Core State Stan-
dards, Olson said. The Common Core are
significantly different to the prior stan-
dards.
Like many districts in the state, Medford
has had to invest in new curriculum, espe-
cially in the areas of language arts and
mathematics, to adhere to Common Core.
Beyond the cost of the new curriculum,
Olson said it has taken time to research new

On Valentines Day, a
Chairville Elementary School
fourth-grade class worked togeth-
er to touch the hearts of others
outside their own community.
Dana Carmody-Burns fourth-
grade class held an exer-thon on
Feb. 14 to raise money for a non-
profit called Davids Dream and
Believe Cancer Foundation. The
foundation raises money for New
Jersey families affected by a loved
one with cancer. The project was
part of a school-wide event to in-
volve the students in service proj-
ects on Valentines Day.
Carmody-Burns has an exist-
ing relationship with the founda-
tions founder, David Caldarella.
The two had worked a summer
job together at a restaurant in
Manahawkin. Shortly before the
fundraiser, Caldarella received a
call from Carmody-Burns about
getting him involved.
When she started thinking
about the service project, she
thought about the foundation I

programs and choose the ones
best fit for the district. The dis-
trict also needed to provide train-
ing for teachers with the new cur-
riculum.
Upgrading the districts tech-
nology has been the other chal-
lenge Medford has faced. Olson
said the district has made im-
provements over time in prepara-
tion for PARCC.
Technology is ready to go, he
said. Weve had to plan over the
last few years to make sure we
had an adequate infrastructure.
The PARCC test is taken entire-
ly on the computer. The district
has needed to make upgrades so
each student has a computer ca-
pable of performing the tests. Up-
grades to the schools Internet
were also needed.
The school district will be able
to evaluate its readiness for
PARCC through an online tool.
Its showing districts whether
they are ready for the field test
and the PARCC test, Olson said.
The field test has its positives
and negatives. Olson said it will
be a good evaluator for the school
districts readiness going into
next year.
However, the field test also cuts
into school time for the classes
taking it. Students performing
the field test are also taking the
regularly scheduled NJASK as-
sessment.
However, Olson feels the field
test will help put the district on
the right path heading into next
year.
All school districts want to try
and make programs successful,
Olson said. You want it to be suc-
cessful and done well because you
want your students to be success-
ful.
In other news:
Further amendments have
been made to the school calendar.
March 18 and June 20 are now full
school days for all students. June
23 and 24 will be early dismissal
days. The changes were made to
accommodate a fifth snow day
from Feb. 13.

Public Schools Board of Educa-
tion meeting is a work session on
March 10. The next action meet-

tively scheduled for the public

INTERIMPUBLISHER
F
or the past few years, Gov.
Christie has been bold and
straightforward with his push
for reform, tax cuts and hope during
his annual state budget address.
Last week, he was anything but.
Instead of painting a rosy picture of
a bright future for New Jersey,
Christie stuck to reality and seemed
to cast a potential dark cloud. If we
dont do something about pensions
soon, well all be paying for it dearly
later, is what he said.
Christies proposed $34.4 billion
budget includes a full payment of $2.25
billion for state workers pensions. But
he said that changes he made to the
pension plan a few years ago arent
doing enough, and said that too much
of New Jerseys spending goes toward
what he called entitlements, a
phrase his opponents, and union lead-
ers, obviously took exception to.
With our long-term obligations
only set to increase in the coming
years, the problem will not go away by
itself, he said. We cannot wish it
away. We cannot make it go away by
magic. What we must do is what we
were sent here to do by the people to
lead and to act decisively again.
Democrats responded by saying that
the pension reforms are working just
fine, and time will prove that every-
thing is A-OK.
Were not so sure that the system
will simply fix itself, but we also dont
necessarily agree with Christie that
more major changes are needed right
now.
What we do agree with is that more
spending cuts need to be made some-
where. The state needs to get out of
debt or at least move closer back to
even and it needs to do so soon.
Local county governments, municipal-
ities and school districts need to share
more services to cut spending without
cutting quality of services and the
state needs to provide these entities
with the ability to do so.
So what to do? Who really knows?
While making more major changes
might be the answer, sitting back and
doing nothing isnt either.

Administrators in the Lenape Regional
High School District received the 2014 New
Jersey School Performance Reports for the
Lenape, Shawnee, Cherokee and Seneca
high schools.
Overall we are very pleased with the re-
port, which accurately reflects the dis-
tricts strengths as a high-achieving dis-
trict, said Superintendent of Schools
Carol Birnbohm. The district continues to
have higher than average graduation and
post-secondary enrollment rates as well as
SAT scores. Additionally, weve addressed
areas of improvement from the 2013 re-
port.
The NJ School Performance Reports
evaluate school performance in three key
areas: academic performance, graduation
and post-secondary performance and col-
lege and career readiness.
In the performance area of academic
achievement, two of the four high schools
met 100 percent of the state Department of
Education targets. Cherokee High School
met 92 percent and Seneca High School met
83 percent of the of the NJDOE targets.
Both Cherokee and Seneca missed one in-
dicator of success on the High School Pro-
ficiency Assessment for the subgroup stu-
dents with disabilities.
With one of the highest graduation rates
among districts in Burlington County and
statewide, all four schools in the Lenape
Regional High School District met 100 per-
cent of the benchmarks for graduation and
post-secondary performance.
The districts 2012-2013 average gradua-
tion rate was 95.83 percent, an increase
from the 2011-2012 average of 95.3 percent.
This was reflected in this years perform-
ance reports, with the graduation rates for
all of the LRHSD high schools exceeding 94
percent, well above the statewide target of
75 percent.
According to the National Student Clear-
inghouse, the districts post-secondary en-
rollment rate 16 months after high school is
84 percent, an increase of more than 5 per-
cent compared to last years report.
The increase in post-secondary enroll-
ment demonstrates our commitment in en-
suring our students are prepared for two
graduations high school and college,
Birnbohm said.
Another indicator of the districts grad-
uates success in college is high average
SAT scores, which held steady at 1550 for
all four high schools in a five-year analysis
from 2009 through 2013. According to the
College Board, a student with an SAT score
of 1550 or higher is more likely to get a B

The following information was
provided by the Medford Town-
ship Police Department.
On Feb. 19 at 6:21 p.m., a resi-
dent of Burke Drive reported a
vehicle burglary to police. Offi-
cers conducted an investigation
and determined that a 24-year-old
male from Mt. Laurel had entered
the victim's vehicle and stolen a
bank card. The card was later
used at a local ATM machine for
unauthorized transactions.
The suspect was arrested with-
out incident on Feb. 21 in Mt. Lau-
rel and transferred to the Burling-
ton County Jail in lieu of bail,
which was set at $30,000. He was
charged with burglary, credit
card theft and the fraudulent use
of a credit card.
On Feb. 20 at 8:28 p.m., Medford
Township Police were dispatched
to a single-family residential
dwelling for a break-in. Officers
discovered forced entry to a rear
door. Police determined that be-
tween the hours of 6:30 a.m. and
8:30 p.m., unknown suspects en-
tered the dwelling and stole vari-
ous pieces of electronics, jewelry
and other items. The incident is
under investigation.
On Feb. 22 at 6:15 p.m., Medford
Police responded to the 200 block
of Tuckerton Road for a theft of a
bicycle. The homeowner said that
they came home and observed a
male taking a bicycle from the
front porch of the home.
The suspect was described as
wearing dark jeans, a black sweat-
shirt and a red and black hat. The
bicycle was a BMX model with a
black frame, chrome handle bars
and black foot pegs. The owner es-
timated the bicycle at $1,500.

minus freshmen year of college,
helping to put them on a path to
graduate from college.
For a second year, the four high
schools did not meet two key
benchmarks that, according to
the Performance Reports, are in-
dicators of college and career
readiness the percentage of stu-
dents participating in PSAT and
the percentage of students taking
at least one advanced placement
or international baccalaureate
test in English, math, social stud-
ies or science.
"We addressed our low partici-
pation in the PSATs by establish-
ing a new requirement that all
college prep students take the
PSAT at least once each year in
grades nine, 10 and 11 beginning
this school year, Birnbohm said.
According to Birnbohm, the
district is dedicating more time
and resources to the PSATs at no
additional cost. We anticipate
the results of this proactive pro-
gram will be reflected in next
years performance reports, she
said.
According to Birnbohm, the
low percentage of students taking
AP tests reflects the autonomy
the district allows its AP students
and is not a true indication of dis-
tricts students' participation in
AP coursework.
"Lenape Regional High School
District students can select from
18 AP courses. We encourage our
students to select courses based
on their interests and allow them
to determine which AP tests they
need to take based on their college
and career goals, Birnbohm said.
Its a reflection of our mission to
encourage our students to take ad-
vantage of every opportunity
while in high school to learn and
excel in a wide range of fields.
The LRHSD also offers the pop-
ular dual enrollment college ac-
celerated program in partnership
with Burlington County College,
enabling students to earn college
credits while taking district
courses. Many students elect to
earn CAP credits, rather than
take an AP exam. Nearly 1,300
students from all four schools
participated in the CAP program
in 2012-2013.
According to Birnbohm, the
state Department of Education
has indicated that dual enroll-

was in and thought it would be a
good tie-in for my kids, Caldarel-
la said.
To prepare for the event, Car-
mody-Burns talked to the room
parents in the class for ideas. Not
only did she want the students to
raise money for the foundation,
she also wanted to create an event
the kids would enjoy.
Heather Sharnoff, a room par-
ent for the class, helped brain-
storm the event. The parents or-
ganized an exer-thon that could
be held in the schools cafeteria.
Because of being winter and
all of the snow, it wasnt like we
could do something outside,
Sharnoff said. So they can pick
the hula hooping or they can jog
for 30 minutes.
Sharnoff got the paperwork or-
ganized for the kids. Because the
event was organized hastily and
due to snow days, there was not a
lot of time for the kids to raise
money.
When the paperwork actually
went out for the contest, it was
Feb. 3 because of all the snow
days and they had to return their
envelope by Feb. 12, Sharnoff
said.
Sharnoff drew up a chart to
track the money raised. The chart
topped off at $700, as Sharnoff
didnt expect them to go beyond it
from the beginning.
Once Feb. 14 rolled around, the
class had raised $2,010.
It was amazing how much
money the kids raised, Sharnoff
said.
All the money donated went to
Davids Dream and Believe Can-
cer Foundation, a nonprofit
group Caldarella started in 2010
when he was battling stage four
head and neck cancer.
I had received tremendous
support through a year-long bat-
tle for myself, and I just wanted a
way to pay it back, Caldarella
said.
Unlike foundations whose
main focus is on research, Cal-
darella wanted to help families
and loved ones directly affected
by cancer. He said the disease can
really affect others in more ways
than one.
What I realized also going
through it myself, not only is can-
cer physically and emotionally
draining, but obviously theres
the financial end of it, he said.
Theres really not many organi-
zations that help patients directly
with funds. So we thought it was a
good way to help communicate
with other patients in the battle.
Carmody-Burns fourth-grade
class helped Caldarellas cause
immensely. Not only did the class
raise money, they also touched
Caldarella with their understand-
ing and compassion.
The kids get it and they also
know that it could be their neigh-
bor, it could be their moms
friends, it could be an acquain-
tance, he said.

foundation and to donate, visit
