Gabriel Orozco - Thinking In Circles DVD Fruitmarket Gallery 2014 ISBN 9781908612243 Acqn 23491 DVD 14x19cm 15mins 10 Gabriel Orozco (born Jalapa, Veracruz, 1962) is one of the foremost international artists of our age. Rising to prominence in the early 1990s, he has developed a consistently innovative practice, making work that not only captures the imagination but also powerfully engages with key material and conceptual issues of what it is to make art. This new exhibition takes the 2005 painting The Eye of Go as its starting point, and looks at how the circular geometric motif of this painting part of a way of thinking for Orozco, a way to organise ideas of structure, organisation and perspective migrates onto other work, recurring in other paintings, sculptures and photographs. A highlight of the exhibition is a series of large geometric works on acetate, made in the mid 1990s, yet never before exhibited. Rather than surveying the whole range of Orozcos practice, the exhibition seeks to cut a conceptual slice through it, to look deeply into the mechanics of the artists thinking and working process. Not only does the exhibition propose a different view of Orozcos major contribution to changes in art in the 90s but it brings to the fore the urgent problem of arts makeability now.

Louise Bourgeois - Has The Day Invaded The Night Or The Night Invaded The Day DVD Fruitmarket Gallery 2014 ISBN 9781908612151 Acqn 23492 DVD 14x19cm 15mins 10 Louise Bourgeois is one of the greatest and most influential artists of our time. In a career spanning seven decades, from the 1940s until her death in 2010, she produced some of contemporary arts most enduring images, making sculptures, installations, writings and drawings which, in mining her own psyche, have entered the collective unconscious. Bourgeoiss work is personal yet universal, rooted in the details of her own life, but reaching out to touch the lives of others. This exhibition of work on paper presents some of her most intimate work, both drawing and writing. The exhibition begins with a labyrinthine presentation of Bourgeoiss Insomnia Drawings, a remarkable suite of 220 drawings and writings made between November 1994 and June 1995. Created in the suspended state between sleeping and waking, The Insomnia Drawings contain all the major themes of Bourgeoiss work and reveal the close link between drawing and writing that is such a key part of her practice. Also in the exhibition are two suites of large-scale works on paper, When Did This Happen? from 2007, and I Give Everything Away, made right at the end of the artists life in 2010. A mix of writing, drawing and printmaking, these large works are both haunted and haunting.

Often set in restricted environments, whether self-constructed rooms or landscape features, his films challenge both participants and viewers in a basic, primordial way through the evocation of vertigo. This precondition of boundaries operates to expose the human body to elementary forces, while simultaneously documenting natural spectacles for instance, sulphur mining in Eastern Java in the tradition of the sublime. Besides critical analyses of his works, the book includes numerous images from films.

In five episodes, a fictionalized narrative stages the backstage and theatricalizes the social interactions and power games, the aspirations, passions, and everyday realities of the field. A great number of artists made contributions that vary widely in form and scale: from acting, screenwriting, directing, and cinematography, to providing artworks as props or material for the script. The screenplay is based on interviews with artists, curators, gallerists, collectors, and art advisors, and their opinions, anecdotes, and gossip. As a project that ran parallel to a year-long residency and exhibition program at a small art space, The Sixth Year is an attempt to rethink traditional exhibition formats and audiences, and to open up a less determined space for both making and engaging with art. orders@artdata.co.uk www.artdata.co.uk

Texts by Stephen Duncombe and Steve Lambert, Alanna Lockward, Florian Malzacher, Chantal Mouffe, Gerald Raunig, Jonas Staal; and a conversation with etcetera, Nato Thompson, WHW How does art play a role in social and political struggles all over the world? Can art be a tool with which to shape the world, rather than just reflect it? Truth Is Concrete: A Handbook for Artistic Strategies in Real Politics takes the possibility of concrete truth as a working hypothesis and looks for direct action and concrete knowledge: for an art that not only represents and documents, but engages in specific political and social situationsand for an activism that not only acts for the sake of acting but searches for intelligent, creative means of self-empowerment. This book is the second manifestation under this title; the first materialized as a twenty-four-hour, seven-day marathon camp that took place in the frame of the steirischer herbst festival in Graz, Austria, in September 2012. This handbook is a stand-alone publication, emphasizing the usefulness of the different artistic approaches collected. It is a toolbox and a manual with contributions by key protagonists in this field. One hundred texts describe very different strategies and tactics, written by their inventors and/or practitioners from all over the world, mapping the broad field of engaged art and artistic activism today. Additional essays focus on the philosophy, structures, and modalities behind the many battles to make this world a better place.

David Lynch Naming Kayne Griffin Corcoran 2014 ISBN 9780989789400 Acqn 23298 Pb 13x20cm 156pp 72ills 21.95 For the legendary director, photographer and multimedia artist David Lynch (born 1946), the complex relationship between objects and their names has been a point of departure in his work since The Alphabet, his second short film made in 1968 during his student years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Based on a dream his first wife had about her niece reciting the alphabet, Lynch has described this early work as "a little nightmare about the fear connected with learning." Later, between 198788, Lynch developed the "Ricky Board" drawing series, in which the same object is repeated across four rows of five columns, with each one given a different name. "You will be amazed at the different personalities that emerge depending on the names you give," Lynch observes. This book traces how Lynch uses "naming" in film, photography, drawings, watercolors, painting and prints from 1968 to the present.

For her exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery she has made a new book, Drawing Water. Believing that drawing is a mechanism for exploration as much as a tool for representation, Kovats brings together in the book drawings by map-makers, writers, shipbuilders, whalers, soldiers, sailors, artists, archaeologists, cartographers, scientists, uranographers, engineers and dreamers a diverse selection united by the sense that in making the drawing they were looking for something. A selection of Kovats own drawing and writing anchors the book which attempts to construct, in the artists words, a portolan, a chart drawn at sea to guide a sailor from one safe harbour to the next.
