Girl Scout of the Philippines (GSP)

In 1917, there were troops organized by American Army and Navy families in various parts of the Philippines !hese were registered directly with the "irl #couts of America !he organization of these troops led to more lone troops such as the $ose !roop in %avao in 191&, in 'apiz in 19(), and the *t Province in 19(& #everal of these troops were organized by missionaries !he *ovement was formally founded by +osefa ,lanes -scoda, wartime heroine, through the initiative of the .oy #couts of the Philippines who sent her to the /nited #tates of America in 1909 to ta1e up "irl #couting courses #he also observed "uiding in -urope and visited the 2orld .ureau in -ngland 3n *ay (), 1945, the "#P was chartered under 'ommonwealth Act No 64( during the administration of President *anuel , 7uezon !he "#P was not even two years old when 2orld 2ar II bro1e out It had to stop its formal operations, but vowed to continue its service to a nation in travail 8elena 9 .enitez, 'hairman of the first "#P 'entral 'ommittee, recalled the war years: ;As 'hairman of the emergency <olunteers #ocial Aid 'ommittee =<#A'>, together with some "#P 'entral 'ommittee members, the 'haplains?Aides and +unior ,eague Presidents, we wor1ed closely with !ony and +osefa in the grim and critical mission of bringing succor and relief to %eath *arch prisoners in #an @ernando and 'apas !his brief episode in the life of the "#P @ounder must not be overloo1ed nor left untoldA !he wartime services rendered by women leaders and volunteers under *rs -scoda included the following: conveying the messages of families to the war prisonersB compilation of names and addresses of @ilipino prisonersCofCwar who were confined at 'amp 3D%onnel in 'apas, !arlacB collection of foodstuffs, medicines, used clothing, old leather shoes and even coconut shells for platesB housing and feeding the stranded students in *anila, and later, when the situation got worse in the city, +osefa and her formidable teams of volunteers came up with community 1itchens in different districts, serving rice and mongo and other coo1ed foods to the poor, hungry and Eobless residents of *anila -ventually, the heroic underground wor1 of *rs -scoda angered the +apanese Fempetai *ilitary Police #he was arrested together with her husband and both of them were thrown into the dreaded dungeons of @ort #antiago, the infamous prison during the +apanese occupation In 194) the "#P was admitted as a tenderfoot member of the 2orld Association of "irl "uides and "irl #couts =2 A " " " # > It was given the status of full membership in 194& !he "#P has the distinction and privilege of hosting various international gatherings among which were the $egional 'entenary 2orld 'amp in 1967, the Asian !rainers 'onference in 19)1, the International 8eritage 'amp in 19)), the 2A"""#Gsponsored Public $elations G @inance #eminar in 1971 which was participated in by 10 nations, and the 01st 2orld 'onference of 2A"""# in (55( In turn, the "#P has also been represented at all 2orld

'onferences of the 2orld Association, various world training conferences, international camps and girlClevel gatherings, among others In 19)6, to celebrate the #ilver +ubilee of the *ovement in the country, special events and service proEects were calendared year round !he 2orld 'hief "uide, ,ady 3lave .aden Powell, too1 the salute of more than five thousand "irl #couts at the ;PasasalamatA held at the ,uneta Par1, a fitting close to the yearClong celebration !he "#P was presented the 2alter %onald $oss !rophy Award in 19)6 for the outstanding service proEect rendered to the children of evacuees who were victims of the eruption of !aal <olcano 3n +une (, 1976, Presidential %ecree 7(5 was signed, authorizing the restructuring of the "#P 3n *arch 17, 197), the new "#P 'onstitution and .yC,aws were ratified and confirmed After several years of study, evaluation and research, the program of the "irl #couts of the Philippines was revised in 19)& !he revision was approved at the 11th National 'onvention @ull implementation of the revised program ensued It was called the Nine Program -mphases =9-> In 1995, "#P celebrated its 65th year "irl #couts all over the country centered their activities, services, and proEects on the "olden 3pportunities along siH concerns, namely: -nvironment, -conomic #elfC#ufficiency, @amily ,ife, 3ur 8eritage, Preparedness and International /nderstanding In the same year, *rs !eresita .ermudez 'hoa was elected member of the 2A"""# 2orld 'ommittee G a ;firstA for a @ilipino Another ;firstA in +uly 1990 was the appointment of %r Amelita %ayritC"o as 'hairman of the Asia Pacific 'ommittee of the 2A"""# In 199) during the (9th 2orld 'onference of the 2A"""# in Nova #cotia, 'anada, *rs 'hoa was elected as <iceC'hair of the 2orld .oard =formerly 2orld 'ommittee> and %r "o was reC appointed 'hair of the Asia Pacific 'ommittee of the 2A"""# %r "o was elected to the 2orld .oard in 1999 and in (55( was elected (nd <iceC'hairman of the 2orld .oard, during the 01st 2orld 'onference held in *anila In 1995, a !as1 @orce, composed of eHperienced "irl #couts, trainers, leaders, professional staff and consultants started to wor1 on a new program called the &CP3IN! '8A,,-N"- =&CP'> which will help the @ilipino girls and young women cope with the fast changes that surround her in this age of technology 2hile the basic cherished values contained in her Promise and ,aw ma1e the foundation of this &CPoint 'hallenge, activities in the new program will eIuip her with the 1nowledge and s1ills she
