The last thing you want is people squinting at your visuals and interrupting you to clarify what your slides say. Youre almost always safe putting your text in simple font styles, such as Times, Palatino, or Helvetica.

All these typefaces have simple, easy-to-read designs that wont flavor or interfere with your presentation.
Your best bet for a presentation background is a cool tone, such as blue or green. For maximum readability, apply a high-contrast color to the text: for example, for a dark blue or dark green background, use yellow or white text. Draw attention to graphics and other objects you want to emphasize by making them warm colors, such as red, orange, and yellow. (Several of these color schemes are offered in PowerPoint templates.) Avoid using red and green or any complementary colors side by side as they tend to create a vibrating effect known as simultaneous contrast. Keep in mind the psychological meanings associated with colors. (To test your color-meaning knowledge, visit colorize.com)
COLOR
(1) (2) (1) Although warm colors are visually appealing, they offer little contrast, making the text difficult to read. (2) High-contrast colors provide instant impact.
RULE 3: CHOOSE
R E L AT E D C L I P A R T
You are primarily conveying your message by voice, as well as by the text in your visuals. Images such as clip art are only included for quick visual reinforcement (except for photographs or other images needed to explain a point). So use clip art sparingly, selecting pieces that are simple in style and color. Make sure that the clip art relates specifically to the message youre displaying. If members of your audience are occupied trying to decode your visuals, theyre not paying attention to your presentation. Now youre ready to create a presentation thats visually clear, relevant, and interesting. Your audience is sure to get the right message. For more color presentation tips and downloadable templates, go to colorconnection.tektronix.com
CLIP ART
To use clip art effectively, choose simple images that reinforce your key messages.
Dear Dr.
We just purchased a Tektronix Phaser 740 color printer for our network of Windows 95 and Windows 98 computers. We plugged the printer into the network with an Ethernet connection, but the printer doesnt show up in the Network Neighborhood. How can I print to the printer if I cant find it? Lillian
When I print my comps on my Phaser printer, the PANTONE Colors dont match my PANTONE swatchbook. Im worried my photographs wont look right on press, either. How can I get consistent color output on my Phaser printer thats a good approximation of what Ill get on press? Jerry
D E A R J E R R Y,
The easiest, most common way to have your Tektronix color printer simulate the colors youll see on press is by using the printers commercial-press color correction setting. You can print commercial-press color sampler charts directly from your printer to show four-color (CMYK) options. The commercial-press color setting works consistently well for comps because it provides a good representation of how CMYK images (including accurate color scans of photographs) will print on a printing press. (SWOP, Euroscale, and other pressmatching options are also available from your printer for matching different printing presses.) In special cases where you want to use your Tektronix printer as a production device (instead of a press) and need precise control for an exact PANTONE* match, you may choose to take advantage of Tektronix printerspecific PANTONE Color-matching charts. Keep in mind that if you change your document color settings, you will need to reset them as standard PANTONE Colors before press time. For more details, refer to tektronix.com/Color_Printers/support/ and search the TekSMART knowledge base for document 3320. Dr. C
DEAR LILLIAN,
To install a Phaser color printer on a peer-to-peer network of Windows 95/Windows 98 computers, additional software is necessary. (Tektronix provides PhaserPort software.) Follow these six steps to successfully network your printer: PhaserPort uses TCP/IP to communicate, so simply assign the printer an IP address. Then insert the Phaser Software CD-ROM and choose a custom installation. From the list of selectable items, install PhaserPort Windows 95/Windows 98 TCP/IP printing. Continue the installation. In the Add PhaserPort window, click the Browse button and Choose your printer.
Click OK to automatically populate the Add PhaserPort window. Click OK again, and finish the installation. From the list of Available Ports for the driver, choose the newly created PhaserPort. Now you're ready to print! For additional help, see tektronix.com/Color_Printers/support/ and search the TekSMART knowledge base for document 9178. Dr. C

We just purchased a new Macintosh G3 to use with our Phaser 840 color printer. The problem is we dont know how to hook it up. We see a parallel port on the back of the 840, but our G3 doesnt have a parallel port. How are we supposed to connect the two? Charlie

Tektronix now offers a tool that allows you to check the status of your service job online. Simply enter your printers serial number and your Tektronix Request ID (which you receive at the time you request service), and this handy Internet feature tells you the exact status of your service call. To check this out, simply go to tektronix.com/Color_Printers/ support/ and select Verify Job or Job Request Status.
(Currently available in the U.S., Europe, and Canada.)
DEAR CHARLIE,
Your new Macintosh G3 and your Phaser 840 color printer both have a port known as Twisted Pair or 10BaseT, which resembles an oversized telephone jack. The port allows two devices to be connected directly over Ethernet with a crossover (Twisted Pair or 10BaseT) cable. You may also use a hub (center box as shown) to connect more than one Macintosh computer with your 840. Connect one Twisted Pair cable from each Macintosh to the hub, then connect a separate Twisted Pair cable from the hub to the printer. Once these connections are in place, set the AppleTalk Control Panel to Connect via: Ethernet and the Phaser 840 printer appears in the Chooser.

The International Color Consortium (ICC), comprised of computer, graphic arts, and printing companies, was formed in 1992 to bring order to the randomness of the color world. The group promotes its objective color standard, which is independent of a specific platform, device, or application. To achieve the ICCs mission, support for the ICC color standard must start at the operating-system level. Apples ColorSync 2.6 and Microsofts Windows 98 are steps in the right direction, but it is with the launch of Windows 2000 that Microsoft and Apple are promising the first cross-platform ICC color-management solution. Recently, applications such as Photoshop 5.02, QuarkXPress, and PageMaker also have started supporting ICC color flow. In addition, most scanners, monitors, and printers now ship with device profiles (containing color characteristics) with generic or customized ICC color flow settings.
If the ICC is successful, it wont matter if you create a file on a Mac or a PC, in PageMaker or in Quark the color will look the same.
C R E AT I N G I C C C O L O R F L O W
ICC color flow typically begins with a calibrated monitor and calibration and profile-creation tools, such as Color Solutions, Color Partnership, GreytagMacbeth, Heidelberg CPS, and Monoco. The relevant application is set up with the correct ICC source and destination profile settings. Then the ICC color-management system takes over, mapping the color of each device so that the final printed piece matches the image on the screen as closely as possible. To optimize your Tektronix printer for ICC color flow, go to tektronix.com/Color_Printers/products/solutions/ design.html and see the 5 Steps to ColorSync page.

Justice Brothers stays in the fast lane with its Phaser 780 tabloid printer
Justice Brothers, Inc. is a manufacturer and worldwide distributor of car care products and fleet, farm, and industrial lubricants and cleaners, with more than 50 products in all. The company has been actively involved in racing for more than five decades. The well-recognized Justice Brothers brand can be found at racing events throughout the world.
The ability to print on a variety of paper stocks also was important to Justice. With the inkjet printer, we were married to expensive, specialized stock that we had to order. If we ran out, we had to stop printing until someone could go out and get more paper. Justice appreciates the flexibility the 780 offers him and the companys graphic designers. We can use any kind of paper we choose, he points out. I especially like printing directly onto glossy stock now thats high impact! Justice knows that image establishes expectations. People make decisions about who you are by the image you project. And with the Phaser 780 color printer, I know we always project an image of quality and professionalism.
Our inkjet printer simply couldnt keep up with our needs, states Ed Justice, Jr., president of Justice Brothers. Thats why I asked Kelvin Munios to look into a better solution. His choice of the Phaser 780 color printer has been great for Justice Brothers. In fact, were thinking of buying another soon. Justice, a former graphic designer, The color output is so oversees both the true, he notes, I dont corporate and even bother with pricey marketing functions digital proofs anymore. of the company. We print a lot of our materials in-house, and thats why I wanted the best printer around, he says. Justice Brothers creates product-packaging comps, on-demand literature, business documents, as well as point-of-sales and merchandising materials. The color output is so true, he notes, I dont even bother with pricey digital proofs anymore.
