“Beware of little

expenses: a small leak will sink a great ship” Benjamin Franklin. Spending

money is always fun as long as you have enough to spend. Learning how to

spend the right amount of money can be a difficult thing to learn when you

are growing up.

You have just won a $10,000 shopping spree!

However, there are many requirements that you

have to follow in order to keep the money that you

won. You must follow the instructions very carefully

OR ELSE YOU WILL LOSE ALL OF YOUR MONEY!

Hannah Lindauer EDU 313-006

You are given certain requirements:

 You must follow the directions exactly OR ELSE YOU WILL

LOSE ALL OF YOUR MONEY!

 You must spend as close to 10,000 dollars as possible

without going over OR ELSE YOU WILL LOSE ALL OF YOUR
MONEY!

STEPS:
1) You must donate half of your money to a charity.

a) Put the other half in your pocket for later.

b) Here are some websites with local charities that you could donate to.
You are not limited to these sites. Feel free to explore and find another
charity you would like to donate to.

 The Children’s Home of Cincinnati

• A children’s home in Cincinnati that provides

care and guidance to children and families

 American Red Cross

• A humanitarian organization, led by

volunteers, that provides relief to victims of
disasters and helps people prevent, prepare
for and respond to emergencies.

 Our Daily Bread

Hannah Lindauer EDU 313-006

• Our Daily Bread provides a warm meal in a safe place for all
who come, a place where all are invited to be part of a
community that is caring, supportive, accepting and welcoming.

 Welcome House of Northern Kentucky

• Welcome House collaborates with the

community to provide a continuum of
quality services for individuals and
families who are either homeless or at
risk of becoming homeless
to eradicate
homelessness, foster stability
and promote a just society.

2) Then half of what’s left you must spend on a single item. Put the other
half in your pocket for later. Here are some websites to make that large
purchase.

 Best Price ATVS

• Four wheelers

 Dell Laptops

• Dell Laptops

 The Home Depot

• Home Depot Spas

 (Remember you can always search other websites but make sure
you are only making one purchase). Include the tax. (Remember
not to exceed the amount that you are supposed to spend).

 Use this website to find the tax rate for Kentucky (%)

 State Sales Tax Rates

3) Subtract the amount you were supposed to spend from the actual amount
that you spent. Then add that number to the money that you put in your
pocket.

a) Now, your dollar amount is starting to get tricky

because after tax your number shouldn’t be an easy
number to split like 10,000 was so make sure you are
double checking your calculations!

b) Split the amount of money you have left once again.

Remember to put the rest in your pocket to spend later.

4) You must spend this money at one of your

favorite stores at the Florence Mall.

a) Use the following website to locate

different stores in the mall.

 The Florence Mall

• Florence Mall in Kentucky

b) Select the store that you will be spending your money at and record
the store name, zone, level and phone number.

5) Next, go to the store’s website and spend the amount of money that you
calculated. You will have a large amount of money to spend at this store
so you need to keep track of what you spend.

a) Record each item as you go. If you’re a bargain shopper, don’t forget
about those sales.

b) Write down the original price, sale price (if there is one), total
WITH TAX and the running total (meaning add each item
together as you go so that you have an idea how close
you are getting to your budget).

c) Here are a few of the store’s website from the Florence

Mall. You can also look up websites from other stores in
the mall that aren’t listed.

6) After your shopping spree at the store, take the amount

of money you were supposed to spend minus the amount
you actually spent. Now, take that number and add it to
the amount that is left in your pocket.

7) Finally, your shopping spree is coming to an end. Make sure to continue

following the requirements so you don’t lose your money! You are now
going to book a flight with the money you have left to somewhere in the
world. You want to book a round trip. Remember to get the cost of the
flight to be as close to the amount of money you have left.

Hannah Lindauer EDU 313-006

a) Before you book your flight, you need to find a place to visit.
You are going to search for a city around the world through
Google Earth.

b) However, there is a twist in the competition! You must pick 3

locations.

 The first one you pick without knowing how much it will cost.

Then look up the price of a ticket.

 Cheap Flights

• A site to book flights

 If it is too expensive pick a closer location…too

cheap pick a city farther away.

 Follow this for the next two locations.

 Finally, pick which city was in the best price range.

 Use this guide to help you through it. The guide will ask you to
