Elements of Mechanical Engineering and Workshop Technology ESC-101 Teaching Hours: 04 Practical Hours: 04 Total Credits: 06 Course Description:

This course provides the elementary level knowledge of Elements of Mechanical Engineering and Workshop Technology. Course includes introduction to concept of Energy and energy conservation, Energy management & Audit, Conventional Energy Sources, Working Principle of Work producing devices, work absorbing devices and various mechanical devices. Course also introduces the basic knowledge of manufacturing processes. It covers fundamentals of casting processes, Metal forming processes, Welding and joining processes, Metal removing processes. Course objective: Familiarizing with management, especially with management in energy sector engineering. Fundamentals of product strategy management. Studying methods of energy accounting and energy auditing in energy sector, industry and final consumption. Finding opportunities to increase the rational use of energy. Unit-I (10) a) Energy and mass conservation laws, different forms of energy, Heat Transfer, Work Transfer and it forms. b) Energy management strategy, energy audit: types and methodology, energy audit reporting format, Energy producing devices. c) Non-conventional Energy Sources: Various non-conventional energy resources- Introduction, availability, classification, relative merits and demerits.

Unit-II (10) a) Conventional energy Sources Heat Engines such as I. C. Engine (2S and 4S Engines, Diesel and Petrol engines), b) Steam Power Plant, hydroelectric power plant, Nuclear power plant, gas turbine power plant. c) Reciprocating air compressor and pump, centrifugal pump, rotary pump, blower, air motors, household refrigerator and window air conditioner.

Unit-III (10) a) Mechanical Elements: Power transmission shafts, axles, keys, couplings, bearings b) Drives: types of drives, belt drive, rope drive, chain drive, gear drive and friction clutches. c) Valves: Various types of Pressure, Direction & Flow control valves & their applications, Onoff valves, flow control valves, non return valve, pressure regulating valve, throttle valve, butterfly valve, and solenoid operated valve. Applications, advantages and disadvantages of Hydraulic and Pneumatic systems.

a) Properties of Materials: Strength, elasticity, stiffness, malleability, ductility, brittleness, toughness and hardness. Elementary ideas of fracture, fatigue & creep b) Pattern Making: Introduction, pattern materials, types of pattern, pattern making allowances c) Foundry: Molding hand tools, types of molding sand, properties of molding sand, sand preparation. Die casting: Its advantages & disadvantages, defects in casting.

Unit-V (10) a) Metal Removing Processes: Lathe machine, Bench Drilling Machine, Universal Milling Machine, Tool & Cutter Grinder (Introduction, construction, working, tools used and operations). b) Welding & Joining Processes: Introduction to welding and joining processes, Welding joints, Gas welding, Arc welding, TIG & MIG welding, Soldering and brazing c) Metal forming processes: Introduction to Rolling, Forging, Drawing, Stamping, Extrusion processes.

List of Practicals: i) Measuring Instruments: Demonstration of handling measuring instruments like steel rule, measuring tape, try- square, vernier caliper, micrometer, vernier height gauges, bevel protector etc. ii) Fitting: One job on finishing two sides and make right angles of square job by filling operation, one drilling and taping operations. iii) Welding: One Job on T-joint welded by Electrical Arc Welding iv) Carpentry: One job involving lap joint v) Plumbing: One Job having threading and bending operation vi) Turning Section: One job on lathe machine involving operations like facing, plain turning, step turning, taper turning, chamfering and knurling Reference Books: 1. Objective to develop following Intellectual skills: i) Understand principles of energy audit of domestic devices. ii) Understand principle and working of power transmission devices. iii) Identification and selection of manufacturing processes/operations according to job requirement iv) Identification, selection & understanding of tools, equipment, machines & job material according to job drawing for different workshops Objective to develop following Motor skills: i) Ability to perform energy audit of domestic devices. ii) Ability to handle measuring instruments iii) Ability to read the job drawing iv) Ability to understand the basic working principle of fitting operations, tools and equipment in fitting shop v) Ability to understand the basic working principle of welding operations, tools and equipment in welding shop vi) Ability to understand the basic working principle of molding and casting operations Learning Outcomes: i) Upon successful completion of these practical the student will be able to ii) Explain principle and working of power transmission devices. iii) Illustrate energy audit of simple domestic appliances. iv) Understanding basics of demand side management and mechanisms (technical, legal or financial) that influences energy consumption. v) Recognizing opportunities for increasing rational use of energy. vi) Learning the basics of energy auditing with application on different sectors.
