About Singapore

Singapore has established itself on the global stage with its economic influence and achievement. From a manufacturing hub, a pharmaceutical hub and now a budding centre for emerging technology, R&D, as well as arts and entertainment. Singapore is centrally located and well connected to the entire region (ASEAN, Australia, China & India), Europe and Americas by 80 airlines serving over 180 cities in 50 countries. Weather is the only constant in Singapore with a six-sigma variation of 285oC. The chemical and pharmaceutical industries are major pillars of the Singapore economy. Singapore consistently ranks among the worlds top three oil trading locations and is recognized as a global leader in oil refining. As a dedicated and vertically integrated complex, Jurong island is the centerpiece of Singapores chemical companies from all over the world, including the top 50 global companies. Also, home to six of the worlds top ten pharmaceutical companies and world-class research institutions, Singapore is fast becoming one of the most exciting hubs for biomedical sciences in Asia. The Singapore government aims to develop Singapore as a global clean energy hub. Singapore as a global village starkly mirrors the multi-scale nature of todays chemical industry. Chevron Chem-E-Car Competition 2012 (IHL category)

The Chevron Chem-E-Car competition 2012 will be held during the 14th Asia Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineering (APCChE) Congress 2012. This competition will provide a stage for students from institutions of higher learning (Universities, Polytechnics, ITE) to showcase their creative and innovative ideas in harnessing chemical energy to move vehicles over a specific distance while carrying a specific load. The competition consists of 3 categories, which are poster presentation, car performance competition part 1 and car performance competition part 2. Poster presentation A poster of A1 size only describing the model car (template can be downloaded from www.apcche2012.sg) must be displayed on the day of the competition with information on:

Car performance competition part 1 Each car will be given two opportunities to traverse a specified distance carrying a container that holds a specified amount of water. The distance will be between 15-30 m and the load will be between 0 and 500 ml of water. The goal of the competition is to have the model car stop at the specified finish line. Participants are also required to abide by various safety rules as specified in the rules of the competition. Details of the competition and safety rules can be downloaded from www.apcche2012.sg Car performance competition part 2 Each car will be given one opportunity to traverse a specified distance on a ramping track, the slope of the ramp is less than 10 degrees. The winning team is the car that reaches the destination/ finishing line in the shortest duration Team members The maximum team size is 5 participants. Two of them must be chemical engineering students. Multi-disciplinary teams are encouraged Size of the car The fully assembled car must fit into a shoebox of dimensions no larger than 40 cm (L) x 30 cm (W) x 30 cm (H).
