QUESTION 1. Self-Managed Learning (S"!# is a term coined $% Ian &unningham in the late '()s* which refers to a specific learning approach derived from elements of several other methods including self development* self directed learning and action learning. +Self "anaged !earning* 1,,-# .here ma% $e several means and methods of achieving S"! $% individuals* depending on the nature of the learning re/uired* the environment* availa$le facilities and the overall o$0ective for attaining the self managed learning. 1e will discuss two different approaches which are most common and used widel% $% a large num$er of people. 2 !earning through the internet. 1ithout dou$t* the most powerful approach for self managed learning due to its advanced technological nature. People get to access information related to an% su$0ect or aspect of learning for self development. Seminars and &onferences 3part from gaining relevant information and 4nowledge* this method of self managed learning allows for personal interaction and e5changing of views and e5periences with others. E-Learning thr !gh the internet. A"#ANTA$ES 3lmost an% su$0ect or topic can $e found* with information from the ver% $asics to the most advanced level possi$le.

3llows for the learner to merge information and learning o$tained from more than a single source* there$% enhancing the scope and overview of the su$0ect. It allows the learner the freedom and fle5i$ilit% to choose his6her own time and location* there$% adding convenience of the learner and ma4e the learning process easier.

Ina$ilit% to o$tain the e5act information and learning re/uired due to lac4 of proper guidance $% a tutor or mentor. !ac4 of human touch. "an% people find the learning process much easier to grasp through human interaction. Se%inar& and ' nferen(e& A"#ANTA$ES .wo wa% communications will ta4e place as the learner will have direct interaction with the mentor and can also resolve an% issues regarding the su$0ect which could not $e done through the internet. "ore ideas can $e shared and there will $e more $rains to thin4 a$out a pro$lem 3 person can learn to $e a team pla%er and wor4 with people from different cultures6$ac4grounds* e5periences and other different /ualities "ISA"#ANTA$ES 1or4ing with groups can lead to disputes amongst mem$ers if the% do not simultaneousl% agree on the same decision or conclusion. Some people prefer not to wor4 in groups and are $est left to wor4 alone therefore wor4ing in groups will reduce their contri$ution to the $etterment of the organi8ation. Personal opinions ma% not stand out and individual9s perspective will $e ignored i.e. the final decision or conclusion come up $% a team of people or group could $e possi$l% $iased.

3part from the conventional methods of S"!* Google was one of the first companies that developed a culture of continuous learning and development of their emplo%ees $% providing them an unconventional wor4 environment. .heir Staff are provided private rest areas* the common rest areas provide a ver% casual environment* and the% do not practice the standard methods of holding meetings in conventional $oard rooms. 3lmost all wor4 areas are provided with note pads and mar4ers with the simple concept that a new idea ma% occur to an% wor4er at an% time which he or she has the possi$ilit% of 0otting down immediatel%. .he overall wor4 environment also encourages and enhances the learning a$ilities of their staff* and Google9s success during the last decade is a testimon% to their successful ideolog%. .a4ing advantage of the availa$le resources and facilities* it would $e $est to implement the 2 !earning approach at our :an4* which would allow the emplo%ees an opportunit% to self develop their s4ills and competencies through self managed learning. It ma% $e re/uired to support the a$ove with a few e5pert trainers during the initial stages of the approach to ensure each emplo%ee is guided and assigned su$0ects and topics relevant to their field of wor4 or department within our :an4.

One of the most ideal methods to approach for developing a culture of encouraging lifelong learning in personal and professional aspects of the emplo%ees would also involve the ;R department to wor4 closel% with the !<D .eam. .he first step would $e to develop specific e learning modules and trainings $% the !<D team to suit emplo%ees from all departments and sections of the :an4.

3nother important aspect would $e the communication to the emplo%ees which needs to $e complete* accurate and timel%. 2mplo%ees must $e assigned specific self managed learning modules $ased on their wor4 areas* grade or level of responsi$ilities and according to their e5perience in the field. 3 clear ;R polic% would $e re/uired to $e implemented $% the :an4* highlighting the importance of S"! and an award s%stem developed for emplo%ees who ta4e interest and perform prominentl%. .he polic% should also specif% clear criteria9s for staff future promotions* %earl% assessments and pa% rises $ased on their performance and interest in S"! and development. .his would help in professional as well as personal development of the wor4 force. QUESTION *. One of the 4e% $enefits that an% organi8ation derives from their emplo%ees S"! is an increase in their core competencies* which is the "a0or difference $etween an organi8ation which separates6differentiates them from other organi8ations* there$% providing for optimum utili8ation of their resources and manpower. It is well 4nown that the emplo%ees are one of the most 'e5pensive 'element of an% $usiness especiall% in the service sector +:an4s#. .herefore a reduction in manpower costs and e5penses has a huge impact on the compan%9s financial status. 3nother advantage of S"! for the compan% is the possi$ilit% of managing their resources from within the organi8ation in times of need. If emplo%ees are well trained and well versed with the overall running of the :an4* it $uilds their self confidence and ena$les a wor4er from one section or area to fulfill responsi$ilities into another section or department within the :an4 * for e5ample * there is a $oard meeting in the :an4=s main office to discuss the num$er of che/ues $ounced in the current month and the person in charge to 4eep trac4 of these records is a$sent for some reason* another emplo%ee of the $an4 for e5ample someone wor4ing in the sales department* if well trained would have the 4now hows as to how these records ma% $e accessi$le and made availa$le. .his saves the e5penses and hassle of hiring temporar% staff or contracting a third part% to fulfill a re/uirement in case the need arises* or if the current permanent staff is unavaila$le for a certain valid reason. >or the emplo%ees* apart from $uilding their self confidence and maturit%* it provides them an opportunit% to prove their a$ilities. It can contri$ute to an

e5tent to the concept of division of la$or as well give the emplo%ees6wor4ers a chance of self development and advancement6promotion in their career. .his could pla% a huge role in wor4er motivation and would adversel% have its positive effects on the organi8ation and on the wor4ers performance. 1ith the right policies of professional development* the staff feels the importance of Self "anaged !earning in their career and professional development and enhancement* there$% reflecting with a higher personal moral and personalit%.
