Quick Reference for ftp.bmc.com on Distributed Systems

These release notes summarize information that you will use most often while exchanging files with ftp.bmc.com. These instructions are intended for personal computers and open systems. File names and commands are case sensitive because ftp.bmc.com resides on a Unix computer. ftp.bmc.com/incoming. Use this directory if you want to put a file on ftp.bmc.com. For security reasons, all the files are hidden so you cannot use the ls or dir commands to see the contents of this directory. Compress all files before putting them in this directory, and use a file name that indicates the Issue number and the compression format. For example, a zip file associated to Issue ID 134186 should have the name c134186.zip. Multiple files with the same Issue ID would use the names c134186_1.zip and c134186_2.zip. Check each FTP transfer for successful completion then notify BMC support promptly by email to customer_support@bmc.com about the files you have sent. Promptness is necessary as the FTP housekeeping program automatically deletes aged files to ensure there is room for new incoming files. The automatically deletion normally takes place within 7 days of the file arriving. Include the Issue number as well as these five details for every file you send: 1. The file name (e.g. c123456. drwtsn.zip). 2. The directory on ftp.bmc.com (should be incoming) 3. Compression format (e.g. ZIP or TAR) 4. The type of data in the file (e.g. dump, etc). 5. The size of the file in bytes (see example on the next page, usually displayed by the FTP client program after transferring each file). ftp.bmc.com/outgoing. When a BMC employee puts a file on ftp.bmc.com that is specifically intended for you, you can find the file in the /outgoing directory. Like /incoming, you cannot view the contents of this directory. You can only download a file from this directory if a BMC employee supplies you with the exact file name. Having to know the file name is one of the ways that we can assure you that no other users can download files that are intended for you. A file is automatically deleted from this directory within seven days of the date that the file was copied to /outgoing.
