Israel Alva The Preaching Event: A True Baptist Distinctive By O. S.

Hawkins

Summary In the present chapter Hawkins start to present the actual situation of the churches and more specifically the way that is proclaimed the Gospel or the way that many young Baptist pastors preach nowadays. The messages avoid context, confessions, controversies, and confrontation in our preaching, all this is happening because the majority of the young Baptist preacher are focus more in what the people want instead of what the Word of God says. And He says that this is a fundamental problem because the central to Baptist worship is the preaching of the Book of God to the people of God (page 53). So the purpose is show how the Bible and to be more explicit the apostle Peter and Paul present the messages presented in Acts, such as the message in Pentecost, Thessalonica, Miletus, etc. Giving his Biblical basis for expository preaching the author also present in basis of 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that the preaching have to be a balance of explanatory, expository, explicit and expeditious. As a conclusion of the chapter we can say that the idea of living in a culture which is in the midst of its own ecotonic stage should encourage us to base our doctrine and speak in the good understanding of the Bible as the author says.

Description of the applications and implications contained in the chapters for preaching. Howkins says that the modern approach to preaching is one of accommodation (page 55). This makes remember that the preaching is not something that please natural people or something that is not based in what they want, but in present the Word of God in true. The author fundament the need of explaining the Gospel in basis that Paul reasoned with them (Thessalonica) from the scriptures (page 62). This implies that we have to open up doctrinal truth to the people, and not only some superficial or convenient ideas.

A Summary of at least two preaching insights for your own pulpit ministry gleaned from the chapter The use of many psychological or marketing methods are very common in the speeches nowadays. However, they tend to close many important trues of the Word of God, so it is important to be aware that our principal goal is not please the people, but please God. The final words of the chapter were a verse: the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe (1 Corinthians 1:21). This makes us remember that the tendency is that most of the time the Word of God is going to taste as something foolish for the natural people.
