THM Gas Turbines

06/2004

Reducing the risk of fire in the area of the load coupling casing for all types
Background
There are some THM gas turbine models on which the joint of the sheet-metal cladding for insulating the outlet elbow (exhaust system) is located directly beneath the turbine shaft. If a leak should occur in the coupling casing (e.g. due to natural wear), the runoff path of the leaking oil would coincide directly with the joint, see illustration. In this case the leaking oil could penetrate the casing at the joint, soaking the insulation of the outlet elbow lying beneath it and thus creating the conditions for a fire. To prevent this from happening, we recommend preventive action. It is also recommended that channel-shaped sheet-metal strips are placed over the joint on the sheet-metal cladding of the outlet elbow, so as to route the oil away from the machine in the event of a leak. 2.Ensure that oil mist is removed satisfactorily from the lube oil tank when operating the oil pumps and in each load state of the machine. Particular attention should be paid to this in installations with oil mist fans. The negative pressure should be at least 20 mbar. 3. Routine checks in the course of daily inspections. 4. Corrective maintenance without delay in the event of any deviation from the prescribed condition.

Action
To reduce the risk of fire, we recommend the following action: 1.Ensure that all the components concerned are sealed carefully.
