Medication Policy

Medication Policy Staff at Parklands are only permitted to administer medication prescribed by a doctor. The label on the medicine should clearly state the dosage and when it should be administered. Under no circumstances are staff able to administer other medicines such as eye drops, hay fever medication or pain relief solutions, such as Calpol. Parents should consider if they are able to administer medicines at home rather than bring them into school. For example, if three doses a day are needed, these could be given before school, immediately after school and at bedtime. Parents/carers will be directed to check if this is a possibility before the medicine is accepted into school. Prescription Medication f a child is prescribed medication which does need to be administered during the school day the procedure is as follows! Parent should hand in medication via the school office. School office staff will verify if the medicine does need to come into school by checking if it is feasible for the child to be given the medicine before school, after school and at bedtime. f the medication is accepted into school, the parent/carer will be directed to complete a medication form. "See #ppendix $%. The medication form will be cross checked against the prescription label on the medicine by school office staff in the presence of the parent/carer. School office staff will hand over the medicine & medication form to a designated first aider. The first aider will double check the medication form is correctly completed and cross check it again against the prescription label on the medicine. The medication will be stored in the staffroom fridge or in the plastic medication box held on top of the staffroom fridge. 'edication, except for inhalers, should not be stored or held in any other location in school. The first aider who has accepted the medicine from office staff will complete the medication register "See #ppendix (%. The medication register is held in the medication box on top of the staffroom fridge. 'edicine will only be administered by designated first aiders. )efore administering medication, first aiders should verify dosage against the medication prescription label and the medication register.

The first aider who has administered the medication should sign the medication register. The dosage administered should be checked by a second designated member of staff "First aider or *. The second member of staff should countersign the medication register to verify that the medication has been correctly administered. /nce medication has been administered, it should be returned to the staffroom fridge or the medications box on top of the staffroom fridge. 0earning 'entors/+esignated staff will check medication register at $pm and at the end of the school day to ensure that medication has been administered as re1uired. +esignated staff will also ensure that any medication which is re1uired to go home at the end of the school day is handed over to the relevant parent/carers. The medication register will be updated accordingly. 2here an incorrect dosage has been administered, the ,eadteacher, +eputy ,eadteacher or a member of the 0eadership team should be advised immediately. The parents/carers of the child involved should be contacted to inform them as soon as possible. 'edical advice should be sought as a matter of urgency if re1uired. Inhalers 2here children have been prescribed inhalers, it is important they have immediate access to them when re1uired. #ll staff working in classrooms with children who re1uire inhalers should be aware of who the children are and where the inhalers are kept. t is the responsibility of the class teacher to ensure that this information is shared. nhalers must be kept in the 'edication )ox in each classroom. The 'edication )ox must be stored in a visible location which is easily accessible to adults but not pupils. 2hen inhalers are provided to children for self3administration, a member of staff in the classroom should complete the nhaler 0og. This is so that accurate information can be provided to parents about when the child has used the medication. t is the responsibility of the parent/carer to ensure that inhalers kept in school are in working order and within any given expiry date. ,owever, a designated school first aider will check inhalers in classroom 'edication boxes at the end of each term to advise parents if new inhalers are re1uired.
