1.0 Executive Summary

January 1st, 2077

Aynah

1. The structure of Aynah is designed in-line with natural solar bodies with acceptable modifications to meet the specific requirements of the proposed settlement. The basic structure would be that of a torus. 2. Aynah has been divided into three zones: the Residential Torus, the Agro Torus, and the Industrial Cylinder. This would alleviate all expected impacts of one on the other. 3. Orbital altitude, rotational rate, day/night cycles and values/means for artificial gravity are considered vital for the stability of Aynah and hence are arrived at based on sound scientific calculations. 4. The Residential Torus accommodates four separable habitable volumes so that evacuation of residents from one to the other is possible under all conditions of emergencies. 5. The construction of Aynah will begin using the parts produced by the existing manufacturing facility on the Mercury. The Industrial Cylinder will be built and made operational to begin with so that the parts for the construction of the Residential and Agro tori can be produced on-board Aynah. This construction sequence would bring down the cost of construction significantly. 6. Aynah shall provide earth-like facilities to its residents in terms of climate, water, food, power, waste management, communication mechanisms and internal transportation facilities. 7. Community requirements over the basic requirements indicated above that include housing, parks, and recreational facilities, medical facilities, and 1g requirements for children among others, shall be provided for the residents of Aynah. 8. Human requirements over and above the basic community requirements, indicated above, which would enhance productivity at work place and house hold conveniences on the residential view point are proposed to get addressed during the construction of Aynah. Such requirements shall include automated systems for routine tasks (at work place and also at residential), use of computing resources, use of robotic uses for personalized tasks (of course repetitive), data security and authentication. Hence, Northdonning Heedwell has proposed a practical, feasible design to construct Aynah using state-of-the-art technology and make it operational. Further, Northdonning Heedwell has also presented business perspective of Aynah in terms of strategies to be employed in sequence so that the Foundation Society shall be in a position to start business, generate revenue and eventually generate profit and more importantly, sustain their desired line of business with adequate diversifications for long stretch of time. In view of the above and the assured sincere attempts to fulfill all commitments made in the proposal, Northdonning Heedwell, herewith, express their keen interest in working for Foundation Society on this prestigious earth-shaking project of building Aynah. With this, Northdonning Heedwell expects an award of the project in their favor by the Foundation Society.

Northdonning Heedwell 1

Exectutive Summary

This proposal is prepared by Northdonning Heedwell and is being submitted to the Foundation Society in response to their RFP dated 1st Jan. 2077. The overall objective of the RFP is to design, develop and implement a space settlement in the orbit of Mercury. Foundation Society has named this settlement Aynah in honour of Ayn Rand an author who described the properties of Reardonium, a miracle metal, in her novel Atlas Shrugged. Mining the surface of Mercury for Reardonium, refining the Reardonium ore, manufacturing Reardonium parts using refined Reardonium and related activities constitute the core occupation of Aynah. Based on this capability, the Foundation society intends to transform Aynah into a profitable business venture. Northdonning Heedwell has fully understood this intent of the Foundation society and has prepared this proposal to fulfill the intent in its entirety. Northdonning Heedwell proposes to build and deploy Aynah and commits to complete the entire project within a span of sixteen years. The salient features of Aynah provisioned in its design by Northdonning Heedwell are enumerated as follows:

Retractable walls Description and working

2.1.4 Isolation of the settlement into habitable volumes T1, T2, and the Industrial Cylinder consist of 4 sectors, each being independent of each other. In the event of any emergency such as depressurization, the compromised sector is cordoned off. Aynah will use retractable walls for isolation of the settlement into habitable volumes.

January 1st, 2077

Aynah

Retractable walls, made up of high quality Reardonium and Aluminium will emerge from the ceiling in the event of an emergency, sealing and isolating the compromised sector, following which, specialised robots built to handle such situations spring into action and bring the situation under control. After the danger is over, the retractable walls retract into the ceiling. The population in the sector is evacuated prior to such a procedure. 1] Quick and efficient functioning; 2] The emergency is concentrated only to a certain segment(s) thus not affecting the rest of the torus/cylinder, or the settlement as a whole

2.1.4.1 Evacuation
During an emergency, isolation of the sector, the residents must be evacuated. To carry this out quickly and efficiently, Aynah has been provided with EVAC pods. These pods are kept in the inter-sector pod stations, to be used only during an emergency. These pods are designed to hold a large number of people, are capable of high 10m speeds and are ideal for quickly carrying out a large-scale evacuation.

2.3.3 Techniques for Interior Construction

Construction of interior structures will take place using a special method: compression of Mercurian dust into bricks using high intensity compressive devices. The construction panels for the settlement (glass panels, bricks, solar panel layers) will be gelled in a specially designed construction factory located at the Industrial Cylinder of Aynah.Interior robots will transfer material on spot and fix the construction panel in the skeletal structure prepared during construction (readymade module construction).Ready-made floors, roofs and walls will be transported to the settlement exterior and quickly assembled. The walls & floors will contain ready-made plumbing and wiring which will be connected to the main pipes and circuits during assembly. The construction robots will assemble everything, thus enabling fast and efficient construction. They produce less waste and are energy efficient. Fig.2.3.3.1 shows the factory located at the industrial zone.

2.4 Manufacture of Reardonium

The industrial zone comprises of Reardonium industries of area 100,000sq.ft and 60ft ceiling height. It provides variation in gravity from 0g to 0.5g and variations in pressure from 0 psi to 20 psi.

Fig 2.4.1 The Industrial Cylinder

With the wide range of conditions that the industrial zone of Aynah provides are favourable to create a wide range of desirable properties from Reardonium. 2.5 Protection from intense solar radiation Due to the intense solar radiation near Mercury, measures have been taken to ensure that the residents of Aynah do not experience any temperature extremes. The settlement will be completely surrounded by a 20-inch layer of water, contained within the walls of the settlement. Since water has a high specific heat capacity, it can absorb large amounts of heat without much rise in temperature. This provides additional protection against natural hazards such as solar flares. Using two walls of Reardonium also provides additional protection from space debris.

Northdonning Heedwell 9

Structural Design

Artificial gravity for the Industrial Cylinder will be supplied after the completion of phase 3, while artificial gravity for the Residential and Agro tori will be supplied after phase 5 has been completed. A series of electric motors powered by solar energy will be placed in the rotation zones of the rotating structures (T1 and T2, and the Industrial Cylinder) and will be collectively used to initiate rotation of the rotating structures to the required RPM (0.95 RPM for T1 and T2, and 1 RPM for the Industrial Cylinder). Due to the vacuum of space and lack of atmosphere around Mercury, once rotation has been initiated, it will continue to rotate since there is no opposing force to the rotation. In the event of a collision of the rotating structures with any space debris, the angular momentum will decrease. Therefore, special Angular Momentum and Velocity (AMV) sensors will be installed in the rotating zones, which will send a signal to the Control Center in the event of such an emergency. The Control Center will then activate the electric motors in the rotation zones, increasing the RPM and bringing the situation under control.

H
Table 2.5.1 Natural Hazards Name Solar flares Problems they cause -Rapid change in surface temperature thereby putting stress on the hull components causing rapid thermal expansion and contraction -May also cause extreme changes in cabin temperature and pressure Space debris -Bombardment of settlement by space debris like micrometeoroids and space junk can cause extreme damage to the space ship

Control measures 1. By the use of Expansion/Control joint: It is a structure designed to account for thermal expansion and contraction. Functions: A. It accounts for thermal expansion and contraction in extreme temperature ranges, B. It binds the individual hull panels together. 2. By the use of two walls separated by a 20-inch gap (this gap is filled with water) to reduce temperature extremes within Aynah (explained under 2.5.1). By the use of a two walls which provides additional strength to the structure (explained under 2.5.1).

Aynah

2.5.1 Structural provisions

2.5.2 Filling in the water

Water will be extracted from the poles of Mercury with the help of mining bots, which will then be transported to the settlement. There will be an opening for each compartment through which water is sent in. After filling up the compartment, the opening is sealed. The seal can be broken in the event of an emergency such as a water shortage, or accidental leakage of water (where the compartment will need to be filled in once again). Once the compartment has been refilled, the opening can be resealed.

Fig 2.5.1.1 Cross section of the hull of the settlement 2.5.3 Preventing evaporation

If the water contained within the compartment evaporated, it would tend to exert a great amount of pressure on the walls, thus causing them to crack and weaken. To prevent this, the outer wall has been reinforced with two layers of Reardonium. Thus, the amount of heat reaching the water will not be sufficient to raise its temperature enough to cause evaporation

Structural Design

The hull of the settlement will consist of two walls: an inner wall and an outer wall. The inner wall consists of one layer of Reardonium while the outer wall has two layers. These walls will be separated by a gap 20 inches wide. Within this gap, water will be filled. Since the outer wall is directly exposed to the heat, it will comprise of two Reardonium layers, having control joints at the junctions of Reardonium panels. Both layers will have control joints. The inner wall will not have any control joints. To counter the problem of leakage in the event of a puncture, the water will be contained in vacuumized compartments, where each compartment is 50m wide and separated by 2m thick wall of Reardonium. A section of the hull of the settlement showing the inner and outer wall, the compartment walls, and the expansion joints in the outer wall is shown in Fig 2.5.1.2.

3.0 Operations and Infrastructure 3.1.1 Orbital location

January 1st, 2077

Aynah

To make life possible and sustainable on Aynah, Operations and infrastructure play a very important role. The infrastructure is developed by efficient robots which are capable of constructing a huge settlement around Mercury. What is a settlement without any life? For that, operations provide the basic requirements to make life sustainable on Aynah. Aynah is provided with the perfect atmospheric and weather conditions, day and night cycles, varieties of food items, excellent waste and water management systems, communication systems, transport systems and the orbital location. Aynah would be located on the Sun facing Mercury polar orbit (Polar Orbits are 90 degree inclination orbits useful for space crafts to carry out mapping and surveillance operations around Mercury). Planet Mercury rotates below its polar orbit, enabling Aynah to have low-altitude access to virtually every point on Mercurys surface. The polar orbit gives complete coverage of Mercurys surface to Aynah. Orbital Altitude (at Mercury North Polar Orbit). 7500-15000km Feature Reason

The eccentricity (deviation of an orbit from a circle) and inclination at this location (in the Mercury Polar Orbit) is optimized for the study of planet, acceptable re-radiated heat from mercury surface. The region in this range of orbit does not have that much debris Aynah would also be protected from Solar Winds.

Aynah would be in this orbital altitude as at this point the settlement will be stable and not fall off orbit and this location also fits the requirements, that is; Aynah would be orbiting Mercury for raw materials (Manufacture of Reardonium). Solar energy is available in ideal quantity (neither in excess nor in shortage).

It is regulated using an intricate system of heaters and coolers drawing energy from a solar plant. Residents are given an option to customize the temperature in their houses by using a Climate Control system. Storing Packaging

Food products after processing are stored at low temperatures in the depot area of each sector where they are refrigerated to prevent bacterial growth. The food products in Aynah are packed using Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) technique which is used to increase the shelf-life of fresh or minimally processed food. These are coated with chitosan which acts as an antimicrobial film which helps to prevent the food from bacterial attacks.

Dairy Products:- Dairy Analogues will be produced to provide the residents with dairy products. They are composed of processed rice, soy, almond, cashew, gluten, nutritional, yeast that are made to taste like milk, cheese, yoghurt, mayonnaise, cream, cheese, butter and other dairy products

3.2.3 Electrical power requirements

Some genetically modified crop plants and flowers will also be grown in the Residential Sector to provide a better environment, to add to the aesthetic value and for Air Composition Maintenance. *An average of 2.14 kg of food will be provided to all the residents of Anconioh. So the total requirement will be around 30000 kg per day. Production The electrical power for Aynah will be produced primarily by using solar energy which will be harnessed by the SOLARIS SHIELD which has one layer of Gallium Arsenide solar panels and three layers of transparent Graphene solar panels. On irradiating graphene sheets with sunlight, light of almost any wavelength splits into two regions with different electrical properties which creates a temperature difference that eventually turns into electrical current. Gallium Arsenide also provides protection against radiation. Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) will also be used to generate electricity as a secondary source. A special type of bacteria called Bacillus Stratosphericus will be used in these MFCs. These bacteria can generate twice the amount of electricity generated by other bacteria in MFCs. It can convert waste/flowing water into power. Inside an MFC, the organisms produce carbon dioxide, protons and electrons when kept in a solution without oxygen. Liberated electrons form a negatively charged anode while the protons create a positively charged cathode. This produces both charges necessary to produce an electric current. Storage Nano capacitors will be used to store the electricity produced. It is ten times more efficient than any conventional method thereby allowing a tenfold increase in power density. It consists of millions of virtually identical nanostructures designed to store, carry, and deliver electrical energy. The system exploits various combinations of standard physical properties to achieve higher power, more storage, and rapid recharging. Their storage capacity (which depends on surface area) is also boosted by using nanofabrication which will again increase it massively. These Nano capacitors will be placed below the Solaris Shield in a flattened cylindrical zone.

Harvesting Agrobots will slice and harvest the crops. The cubicles are re-seeded soon after harvesting by the same Agrobots. These Agrobots are fed with knowledge of every crop growing in Aynah and they analyse the situation and the current status of the crops and decide whether to harvest or not. After harvesting, the crops are sent to the processing unit where the crops are processed in these areas into usable food products.

1) Ice from the poles of Mercury would be collected by a specially built spacecraft Volturnus which will use subsidiary robots contained in its hull which will crush the ice and then transfer it to the water tanks after which the Volturnus will fly back to Aynah. After the initial acquisition of water from Mercury each year the Volturnus will go back to Mercury to replenish the water supplies. The 2 tanks in Volturnus have the capacity to carry 22680 litres of water of each, so the total capacity of water it can carry is 45360 litres. 2) Fuel cells will be used as a backup in case of any water shortage or emergency. The water in Aynah is stored using tanks which are made up of fiberglass as it is lightweight, extremely strong, and robust material. The residential torus will have 10 tanks while the Agricultural torus and the Industrial torus will have 4 big tanks each. Sewage water is treated and purified using dual-membrane (via microfiltration and reverse osmosis) and ultra violet technology in addition to conventional water treatment. This water is portable and can be consumed. Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) will also be used to treat the water separately. Water between the exoskeleton of Aynah will also be cleaned using the MFCs with Bacillus Stratosphericus.

4.3 .1 Spacesuit Stowage and Airlock Design

Airlocks have been adequately designed to minimise the change in pressure and loss of air from the initial pressurized area. It consists of a chamber with two air tight doors at the ends. Before entering the air lock the astronauts will be required to enter an area where the pressure will be reduced to 0.7 atm and they will breathe in pure oxygen for 30 min. This is to prevent bends due to depressurization and formation of nitrogen bubbles in the blood stream. When exiting into space ,the door facing the traveller is opened and then closed after he enters.

5.0.2 Networking devices

The Main form of Data Storage among the portable devices and other computing devices would be Carbon nanodots to store data. For other devices, holographic and molecular memory would be used. This enables them to store huge quantities of data in comparatively smaller spaces. By securing data in such carbon nanodots, backup encrypted data is always ensured the users.

5.0.3 Data Storage

All personal computing systems are connected to their designated server made specifically for the device based communications. The main server (Cleos) will record data to the backup servers to provide for a seamless integration between the two and to have backup in case of an emergency or main server breakdown. Every device present at Aynah would transfer and receive data using High speed newer generation LTE networks, which would allow rapid and uninterrupted networking. Boosters will be provided within Ayanh and would maintain the signal strength throughout. All data transfer in the settlement will be encrypted a technique known as Quantum Cryptography.

5.1 Automation for construction

Construction of Aynah has been made fully automated to minimize human labor requirement due to the extremities in conditions at the work stations. By incorporating Artificial Intelligence, a method by which systems learn and adapt to a given set of conditions over a particular time period and by using External human involvement (Human-robot interaction), intricate parts of the construction process is made simple and easy. The robotic systems are programmed to suit the particular requirement and are fitted with edge detectors; pattern detectors etc which help them maximize their efficiency.

5.1.1 Transportation and delivery of material and equipment

To prevent delay in construction process due to lack of materials and equipment, Northdonning Heedwell has employed a fleet of Pegasus shuttles that carry the chief raw material, Reardonium, from the Mercury base to be supplied to the Helix construction bots which would be tracked and monitored by external controllers and carried out in a continuous cycle till the external structure has been completed. To ensure that equipment used for construction is of the highest build quality and to prevent any unwanted repairs and unscheduled maintenance requirements to come by, Northdonning Heedwell is importing the construction robots from Bellevistat and tested before being put to use.

5.1.2 Exterior Construction and Assembly

The Helix is fully automated exterior construction model and is imported from Bellevistat. Before arranging the Helix model onto the exo skeleton .It is programmed with its specific construction sequence and schematics and this is analyzed and learnt by the artificial intelligence built into them. By imprinting each of the construction materials with a unique barcode- it is read by the sensor on board the Helix and determines its correct usage. The Helix comes in two main configurations, the linear and the ring shaped configurations (known as the Helix L and the Double Helix). The ring shaped configurations is used for construction of the major circular parts of Aynah such as the torii and the linear configuration is used for construction of the straight structures such as the central hull.

Linear configurations undergo same processes, but, their construction process is linearly carried out. To ensure that construction is carried out in scheduled time, Pegasus shuttles constantly supply reardonium parts, after curing from mercury surface and contact the Helix constructors using Infrared Beacon technology and ensure that they have materials and prevent any delay due to lack of materials.

5.1.3 Interior construction

The G-43 robots are given schematic drawings regarding the structure they need to construct, construction process, prioritization etc, which they shall analyze by using Artificial Intelligence. By imprinting codes on materials and tools which are to be handled by the G-43s, they identify its use and use accordingly. Over and above the Artificial Intelligence programmed into the G-43s, their programs are subjected to over-ride by their human controllers, in case of any sort of emergency, or change required in construction.

5.2 Automation systems for settlement maintenance, authorization and Contingency plans
The initial interior construction robots (the specifically re-modified and reprogrammed G-43s) are used to perform routine checks and used in maintenance of the settlement after competition of the construction of Aynah. The advantages of using reprogrammed G-43s are that, it can be further reused to maximize its full potential and it also reduces the need for requirement of newer robots for operation of Aynah. The specifically re-programmed bots are used to automate operation of the settlement to a large extent, but, in case of any failures and need for human intervention; human engineers can over-ride the G-43s programming. The Contingency plan drawn out by Northdonning Heedwell for the Foundation Society tries its best to assess every form of threat to the settlement and to work out the best form of abating it and protecting its 14,000 full time residents along with its visitors. 5.3.5 Privacy of personal data

Administrative accounts is secured by a method known as Quantum Cryptography which is the most reliable method out of most known methods in terms of network security. Advantage of quantum cryptography lies in the fact that it allows the completion of various cryptographic tasks that are proven or conjectured to be impossible using only classical (i.e., non-quantum) communication . In particular, quantum mechanics guarantees that measuring quantum data disturbs that data; this can be used to detect an adversary's interference with a message. Personal Computers of residents and work accounts can also only be accessed by fingerprint and retina scans. All methods of verification of authorized use of the system are encrypted to prevent identity theft and exposure to sensitive information

5.3.6 Control of systems in private spaces

The AICD , provided to the residents of Aynah has the ability to control systems in private spaces such as climate control, ambient mood lighting and entertainment systems like televisions and music systems. Entertainment and content is seamlessly controlled by the AICD with custom software built into it for the perfect integration of the AICD with the entertainment and monitoring systems provided by residents in their private spaces.

5.3.7 Personal delivery of internal and external communication, entertainment, information, computing and robot resources
Communication within and outside the settlement will be through the AICD. Information delivery and pod controls will be based in the AICD and through this harmonious integration, residents will have a hassle free delivery of their specific personal data and controls to their personal robot resources.

The Chloris robot is a helper bot used for various purposes such as harvesting crops, spraying pesticides and planting of new seeds to be used as a substitute for human labor. The Chloris (Greek for Goddess of flowers) is specially designed to automate harvesting of crops and spraying of pesticides in lieu of the various processes such as aeroponics employed in growth of crops on Aynah. Using color producers such as RGB (Red, green blue) LEDs and detectors such as Photoresistors, the ED-13 detects the size of the crops and picks them up in accordance to their capabilities. Different sized ED-13s will be available to harvest different types of crops, depending on their sizes. The ED-13s work on Photoresistance effect. The sensors emit light at different heights, and they themselves receive again and process the colors. Depending on the color they receive, they can determine the height and harvest accordingly. For efficient growth of crops, the ED-13s may emit colors such as red, green and blue on the crops. By doing so, the crops get benefitted and grow more effectively.

5.4 Automation for Reardonium refining 5.4.1 Automation for efficiency of reardonium manufacturing

By using the best and most efficient methods of reardonium refining as determined by the Foundation Society metallurgists, efficiency in manufacturing of reardonium is increased. The raw ore arriving from the base at mercury will be unloaded at the docking area by a series of mechanical arms which place them onto the special pods which are used for carrying reardonium to the refining area. The motion of the blocks of reardonium through its refining process will be made possible by using large sets of conveyer belts which transfer the blocks from one stage of refining to another. The reardonium refining process will take place on a set of special conveyor belts having air suction pumps which creates pressure between the belt and the ore and help it to operate even during minimal gravity.

5.4.2 Unloading of raw ore and its movement in its refining process

5.4.3 Formation of refined reardonium

The refined reardonium will be formed and shaped into different dimensions depending upon the required specifications by the use of several automated tools which cut, mould, and press the refined reardonium into different shapes and sizes according to the requirement.

5.4.4 Handling and Checking of Reardonium

The reardonium is checked then scanned for different problems and it undergoes a series of quality checks. The reardonium is then inserted into a specially made storage container having similar dimensions and is shifted to a storage area from where it will be shuttled back to Mercury to undergo curing.

5.5 Robots used to handle reardonium parts 5.5.1 Robots used for manipulating reardonium parts

Specific properties of reardonium are obtained only through curing at specific locations and curing for specific time duration. To reduce manual labour involved in transportation of reardonium blocks and in their manipulation to get a better material cure, Northdonning Heedwell has designed a robot called Lex (Greek for manipulation). Lex can be utilized on the surface of mercury for many purposes involving manipulation of reardonium such as turning over to get a better material cure.

5.5.2 Loading and unloading

To attain desired material properties, reardonium parts have to be moved to different locations on mercury and cured. The Lex bot had mechanical arms which can be used to load and unload the reardonium blocks onto the RetroV. This is represented in the figure RetroV.

A slidable shield is provided which moves forwards and expands its layer, underneath which its hands stay contracted. Thus, by assuming such as configuration, the majority parts of the Lex bot are protected from high solar flare activity and during solar storms. Note: The slidable shield is made of a 5 inch thick layer of reardonium which protects not only the external physical body of the Lex bot such as its arms and body, but also protects the delicate internal electronic chipsets, microcontrollers, data processing units and sensors from solar radiations and intense solar flare activity.
