*Design your Flight-2013 Contest*

About Aero360:
Aero360 is an organization, India, setup to ignite students and enlighten them on the practical applications of Aeronautics and to cater the needs of students pursuing Aerospace/Aeronautical / Mechanical and Automobile Engineering and encourage the rest into Hobby flying. We believe in concrete learning which truly subjugates conjectural learning. Design Competition :

Aero360 is planning to conduct various Competitions for Engineering students to develop technical knowledge for the students. For the first time in INDIA,Aero360 announces the Design your Flight contest for the year 2013. How it is useful for the students? This will help the students to develop their technical knowledge by Designing, analyzing and fabricating a Radio-Controlled Aircraft. This will provide a place for the students where the students will be exposed to other engineering college/university students and share their technical Ideas. The students can get a chance to interact with Professionals from Aerospace Industry. This competition offer a great opportunity for students to participate in a simulated real-world problem, allowing students to gain experience and receive useful and constructive feedback from technical experts from Aero360. It allows the students to do theoretical work and gain real-world insight into the design process. Students will go through all of the primary design steps involved in determining a solution to a Request for Proposal (RFP). This includes determining a hypothetical solution, testing the hypothesis, evaluating its effectiveness, possibly doing some cost analysis, and finally preparing a report that will be submitted in response to the RFP. These responses are then reviewed by experts in the field who will provide constructive responses to the students. Cash prizeof Rs.25000/- for 1st place. Trophies, Awards and Scholarships will be awarded for the Runner-up Place( Second &third)

RULES & REGULATIONS Judging: Students must design, document, fabricate, and demonstrate the aircraft they determine to be capable of achieving the highest score on the specified mission profile. Flight scores will be based on the demonstrated mission performance obtained during the contest. For the 2013 contest year aircraft will be designed to carry the most payload possible. Each team must also submit a written Design Report, which is divided into two phases as noted in the documentation requirements section. A maximum of 100 points will be awarded for the team design report. Scores for the written reports will be announced after receiving the reports. The overall ranking will be a combination of the paper score and flight score. The team with the highest overall ranking will be declared the winner. All submitted reports are the property of Aero360 and may be published or reproduced at their discretion. Contest Site: The fly-off is planned to be held in Tamil Nadu(INDIA). Details on the contest site and schedule will be sent to registered teams, two months before the competition. Team Requirements: All team members including PILOT must be full time students at an accredited University or College in INDIA. We will also provide qualified pilots on the contest day for any teams who are unable to have their pilot attend. Sponsorship: Teams may accept sponsorship in the form of funds or materials and components from any commercial organizations. All design, analysis & fabrication of the contest entry is the sole responsibility of the team members. Schedule: All the teams should send their Team Name, Team membernames, College/university name, phone number, Email-Id and their College registration number to info.aero360@gmail.com. The Registration for the competition Closes on 10th January 2013. Design reports must ARRIVE to the Aero360 mail id (info.aero360@gmail.com) on or before 29th April 2013. Reports will be judged as received, no corrections/additions/page changes will be made by the organizers so check your reports carefully before sending them. Late submissions will not be judged. Teams who do not submit the required written reports will not be allowed to fly. The contest is scheduled for the first week of August 2013. The competition is anticipated to run from morning to evening on a Single day in the first week of

August 2013. A final contest schedule will be e-mailed to the teams prior to the contest date. Awards will be presented at the end of the competition.

It is the teams responsibility to assure that all deadlines are known, understood and met.
Communications: The contest website is located at http://aero360ndf.com/events/ Questions regarding the contest, schedules, or rules interpretation may be sent to the contest administrator by e-mail at :info.aero360@gmail.com Aircraft Requirements:

The aircraft may be of any size and configuration except rotary wing or lighter-thanair. Motors may be any commercial brush or brushless electric motor. No form of externally assisted take-off is allowed. All energy for take-off must come from the on-board propulsion battery pack(s). Aircraft can be made using BALSA, FOAM or any Composites. Must be propeller driven and electric powered. May use multiple motors and/or propellers. May be direct drive or with gear or belt reduction. For safety, each aircraft will use a commercially produced propeller. Can use any type of batteries (Ni- Cad, Ni MH or Li-Po). The aircraft must remain substantially the same as documented in the report (for example you cannot change a flying wing design to a conventional tail design).

Aircraft Safety inspection -Aero360 All vehicles will undergo a safety inspection by a designated contest safety inspector prior to being allowed to make any competition or non-competition (i.e. practice) flight. All decisions of the safety inspector are final. Safety inspections will include the following as a minimum. 1. Physical inspection of vehicle to insure structural integrity. o Verify all components adequately secured to vehicle. Verify all fasteners tight and have either safety wire, lock-tite (fluid) or nylock nuts. o Verify propeller structural and attachment integrity. o Visual inspection of all electronic wiring to assure adequate wire gauges and connectors in use. o Radio range check, motor off and motor on. o Verify all controls move in the proper sense. o Check general integrity of the payload system. 2. Structural verification. All aircraft will be lifted with one lift point at each wing tip to verify adequate wing strength to check for vehicle cg location. This test will be made with the aircraft filled to it'smaximum payload capacity (Teams must inform the inspectors and judges of their maximum design capacity, and must make all flights within that capacity).

Mission Profile: The mission objective is to carry the greatest payload possible over a specified course. Note:All payloads must be secured sufficiently to assure safe flight without possible variation of aircraft cg during flight.

Aircraft will use ground rolling take-off and landing . Each aircraft should take-off, DoOne 360 degree turn and a landing with the payload. Teams will fly as many laps as possible with a 10 minute competition period. Teams will be given a maximum of 2 minutes to place their aircraft on the starting line and prepare for competition before the judges start the timed competition period. They will then have 10 minutes to complete as many flights as possible. Laps count will start once the Engine is started. The more number of Laps will fetch more scores to the participating Team. The payload can be anything of the teams choice (but not explosive or hazardous) Teams will be scored on the total weight of payload flown during a single 10 minute competition period. (The weight of the payload will be calculated and recorded before the Flight starts. More the weight of the payload, more the score) Only Successful flight laps will be calculated. SCORE 1= Report Score * Weight Carried SCORE 2= Report Score*number of Laps TOTAL SCORE = SCORE 1 + SCORE 2

Take-off must have wheels off the ground within 100 feet of the starting line. Aircraft must complete either a right or left 360 degree turn. The direction will be specified on the contest day. Then, finally Aircraft must land safely without any damage to the Aircraft. Flight altitude must be sufficient for safe terrain clearance and low enough to maintain good visual contact with the aircraft. No components may be dropped from the aircraft at any time during the flight.

Flight Course: The orientation (direction) of the flight course will be adjusted based on the prevailing winds as determined by the Flight Line Judge. The flight course will be positioned to maintain the greatest possible safety to personnel and facilities. The nominal flight course is shown in the Figure below.

Design Report: Each team will submit a design report as outlined below. The design report will be submitted in two sections. Submission dates are contained in the schedule section of this document.
