STANDARD: S4.D.1.3.1: Describe types of freshwater and saltwater bodies (e.g., lakes, rivers, wetlands, oceans). 3.3.4.A4: Recognize Earths different water resources, including both fresh and saltwater. Describe phase changes in the forms of water on the Earth. I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes): Students will be able to identify the part that saltwater plays in the water cycle by considering and confirming predictions based on experiment Students will be able to describe the contents of the ocean and be able to logically identify the cause and effect of how high and lower salt content in certain areas occur

II. Instructional Materials Salt water prezi: http://prezi.com/8fa6lnu2i53e/what-is-in-ocean-water/ BrainPop: Saltwater http://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsystem/oceans/ 27 academic journals 27 exit slips III. Subject Matter/Content (prerequisite skills, key vocabulary, big idea) Ocean Salinity IV. A. 1. 2. Implementation Introduction Display experiment from Lesson 1 Bring out exit slips with student predictions a. With student permission, read one or two out loud b. Take plastic off of experiment, examine results c. Note predictions that were correct, and explain why d. Ask students to notice what is left in the cup after evaporation 3. Have students turn and talk with their table group about why salt is left in the bottom 4. Explain to students that today we will be discussing the oceans salt water

B.

Development 1. Open up Salt water prezi 2. Slide 2: What is in ocean water? a. Have students turn and talk with a partner next to them about what they think the household substance equivalent is 3. Slide 3: Salinity a. Have students write down the definition of salinity in their academic journals b. Have students draw or describe with words the content of the ocean 4. Slide 4: Density a. Call on students to answer which of the pictures they think shows the body of water that is easiest to float in and justify their answer in terms of salinity 5. Slide 5: Think about it a. Ask students questions on the slide b. Have students turn and talk with a partner next to them to brainstorm answers c. Call on individual students to give and justify answers d. Reveal answers on prezi slide 6. Summary slide a. Review of information from present and previous lesson Closure 1. Pass out exit slips a. Ask students Give an example of how the water cycle affects the amount of salt in certain areas of the ocean. 2. Collect exit slips Accommodations/Differentiation Provide preferential seating for student who needs clear view of the board Allow students to work in pairs to brainstorm answers for exit slip if need be

C.

D.

E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan Formative: Teacher will monitor student responses during prezi Teacher will collect and assess exit slips Summative: End of unit test V. Reflective Response A. Report of Students Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives 1. How did the students perform?

Remediation Plan

B. Personal Reflection How was my closure effective?

How could my lesson be improved?
