Ribbon-cutting held to mark completion of military mural

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for a mural that honors the U.S. Armed Forces took place Feb. 5 at AJI Sporting Goods, 10444 E. Apache Trail in Mesa. The store is owned by Apache Junction Councilman Jeff Serdy, who commissioned the mural last fall in hopes of having it completed by Veterans Day 2013. Due to a heavy workload, artist Chuck Cramp signed the nished mural Dec. 13, according to his signature. The ceremony marked both a chamber ribbon-cutting for the store, which is a member of the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce but never had an ofcial ribbon-cutting, and the mural, Mr. Serdy explained at the event. Present at the ribbon-cutting were members of the chamber, Apache Junction City Council and local veterans groups. The ceremony included a 21-gun salute by a color guard from American Legion Post No. 27 in Apache Junction. Two World War II veterans helped Mr. Serdy cut the ceremonial ribbon. Above right, they were, from left, Albert Thomas, an Apache Junction man who served in the U.S. Army 1941-46 and retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1985, and, center, Fred Quick, a Scottsdale man who served in the U.S. Marine Corps 1943-46, including time at Iwo Jima in the Pacic Ocean. Mr. Serdy is at right. According to a sign painted on the mural, it is dedicated to the American military protecting our freedom since 1776. It depicts military service members from all eras of American wars, including the American Revolution, Civil War, Korean War, World War I and World War II to present day, Mr. Serdy explained at the event.
