Assignment #4
Due: 5PM, Wednesday October 2, 2013
Assignments are due on the date indicated by 5:00 pm in the course dropbox. Absolutely no late
assignments will be graded. A mark of zero will be recorded in this case. Include a signed cover page
with your work, or it will not be graded.
To obtain maximum marks your answer should be in a form that another student could understand without
undue eort: a poorly expressed solution is not sucient even if the result is correct. Proofread your
assignment before you submit it. Use complete sentences and show your work.
The problems at the end of the chapters in Brown and Churchill are excellent training. If you want to
master the material, I recommend that you attempt a minimum of 3 questions from each chapter.
Throughout, z = x + ij.
1. For each of the following functions, determine: (i) where is it dierentiable; (ii) where is it analytic.
Determine the derivative at the points where they are dierentiable. (Again, we emphasize, z =
x + ij)
(a) | (z) = z
(b) | (z) = 2x + ixj
2
(c) | (z) = x
2
+ ij
2
(d) | (z) = a
z
(e) | (z) = z
2
z
2
2. Consider the function
| (z) =

xj(x+ij)
x
2
+j
2
if z = 0
0 if z = 0

Show that | satises the Cauchy-Riemann equations at z = 0, and yet | is not dierentiable at
the origin. Why doesnt this contradict our theorems?
3. (a) Show that if | (z) R for all z in the domain
1
D C, then | (z) is constant in D. (i.e. there
is some constant t R such that | (z) = t for all z D.)
(b) Show that if | (z) = (x, j) + iv(x, j) is analytic, and = v
2
for z D then | is constant in
D.
4. This question begins with a small computational part. You can do this with any software program
you please, such as Maple, but please include your printed output. See the following for Maple
and Wolfram alpha hints for this question.
(a) Let | (z) = (x, j) + iv(x, j). For the following functions, draw the level curves for (x, j)
and also for v(x, j): | (z) = a
z
, | (z) = z
2
, | (z) = 1,z. (That is, draw the implicit plots for
(x, j) = t
1
and v(x, j) = t
2
for various constants t
1
and t
2
. (Do about 4-5 level curves for
each. Make the image detailedi.e. do more than a simple messy sketch. )

That is, D is open and connected.

(b) Prove that if | (z) is analytic in a region, that the level curves of (x, j) intersect perpendicu-
larly to the level curves of v(x, j) in that region. (Hopefully you observed this in the previous
part!)
These examples are meant to illustrate syntax. Please modify the range, add more curves, and think
carefully about the constants you choose.
Maple code for some implicit plots:
A:=plots[implicitplot](exp(x)*cos(y)=1, x=-1..1, y=-1..1):
B:=plots[implicitplot](exp(x)*sin(y)=1, x=-1..1, y=-1..1, color=blue):
plots[display]([A, B]);
