Women didnt have many rights in 19th century Couldnt vote; expected to work at home: take care of raising family and household matters. During the Civil War, womens roles changed because of necessity Women had to find ways to support themselves and their families; economically Southern women: Those with slaves had it easier; only have to manage slaves Those without slaves had it harder; had to perform own manual work In cities: many women began to take on new jobs Worked as clerks and as office workers for the Confederate Army Were paid half of what males were paid by end of the war, pay became equal* Also worked in southern factories for supplies for the army Most work required hard labor and was dangerous, in normal circumstances; women would have never worked these jobs. Also became teachers Many volunteer organizations to support the war Northern Women Took over farms, often had to work the fields, tend to livestock, and drive goods to the market Many took over jobs in government agencies There were 100,000 new factory jobs Became teachers Had many volunteer organizations to support the war Medicine The Civil War brought about a new profession for women, nursing Before the war, any medical work was totally shunned for women Gained the right to work and then dominated field especially in the north Women and War Women from both sides of the nation followed male soldiers from battle to battle
