Globalization makes it impossible for modern societies to collapse in isolation, as did Easter Island and the Greenland Norse

in the past. Any society in turmoil today, no matter how remote ... can

cause trouble for prosperous societies on other continents and is also subject to their influence (whether helpful or destabilizing). For the first time in history, we face the risk of a global decline. But we also are the first to enjoy the opportunity of learning quickly from developments in societies anywhere else in the world today, and from what has unfolded in societies at any time in the past. That's why I wrote this book. -Globalization is not just about changing relations between the inside of the nation-state and the outside of the international system. It cuts across received categories, creating myriad multilayered intersections, overlapping playing fields, and actors skilled at working across these boundaries. People are at once rooted and rootless, local producers and global consumers, threatened in their identities yet continually remaking those identities. -Where globalization means, as it so often does, that the rich and powerful now have new means to further enrich and empower themselves at the cost of the poorer and weaker, we have a responsibility to protest in the name of universal freedom. -In too many instances, the march to globalization has also meant the marginalization of women and girls. And that must change. -Globalization, as defined by rich people like us, is a very nice thing... you are talking about the Internet, you are talking about cell phones, you are talking about computers. This doesn't affect twothirds of the people of the world. -Globalization has changed us into a company that searches the world, not just to sell or to source, but to find intellectual capital - the world's best talents and greatest ideas. -A strategy is something like, an innovative new product; globalization, taking your products around the world; be the low-cost producer. A strategy is something you can touch; you can motivate people with; be number one and number two in every business. You can energize people around the message. -Globalization means we have to re-examine some of our ideas, and look at ideas from other countries, from other cultures, and open ourselves to them. And that's not comfortable for the average person. -We must ensure that the global market is embedded in broadly shared values and practices that reflect global social needs, and that all the world's people share the benefits of globalization. -A lot of people, including business leaders, think the future belongs to China. Globalization is not a zero-sum game, but we need to hone our skills to stay in play. -Talking about 'stopping globalization' is unrealistic - and probably not what anti-globalization protesters actually want -Globalization and free trade do spur economic growth, and they lead to lower prices on many goods. -We've got to demonstrate why European unity and integration, our vast single market, our single currency, equip us with the strength to embrace globalization. -Greed and globalization aren't just America's fault. -Reliable data on the outsourcing of American jobs is sorely missing from the debate on globalization. -Globalization creates economic policies where the transnationals lord over us, and the result is misery and unemployment.
