Definition: Relatively stable, evaluative beliefs that guide a persons preferences for outcomes or courses of action in a variety of situations.

(McShane & Von Glinow, 2013, p.15). Summary: In the article Leaders, Values, and Organizational Climate the authors Michael W.Grojean, Christian J. Resick, Marcus W. Dickson, and D. Brent Smith examine the role that leaders have in determining organizational values. The authors start off by explaining why values and ethics are important to an organization. They give seven mechanisms regarding values and ethics that leaders should use to set forth the best system. These mechanisms are: Using a value-based leadership, Setting the example, Establishing a clear expectation of ethical conduct, Providing feedback/coaching/support regarding ethical behavior, Recognizing and rewarding behaviors that support organizational values, Being aware of individual differences among subordinates, as well as Establish leader training and mentoring. The theme that runs through these mechanisms is the leaders the values of the business through policy, practice and procedure to organizational members so that they will have a full understanding of the values of the company. Discussion: McShane and VonGlinow explain that values anchor our thoughts and to some extent motivate our actions (16). If a company has the initiative to have a set of values to guide them, it will help employees know easily how to act or behave in certain situations. I think of it as a safeguard to have to protect any situations that may arise. The article Leaders, Values, and Organizational Climate explains that building the policies around the values of your organization will help to lead in a number of situations. If your leader determines the values then the organization is sure to uphold them. Once the Values are set within the policies of the business the employees must conduct themselves accordingly to do well in the workplace. This article can apply to the Christian Values that could be placed within a business as well. If an organization wants to conduct their business in a Christian manner they need to follow the way other businesses uphold their values. The article suggests Surveys have reported that leader role models are the primary influence on individual ethical behavior, particularly the behavior of direct managers and supervisors (Grojean et al, p228). Explaining that one way that a Leader can show the business the key values of the company is leading by example. This means that the Leader should be held responsible for the values most of all. Other ways to do so are by providing feedback and recognize/reward behaviors that support your key values. Doing so will reinforce the values across the company and will encourage employees to share, or express the values more often.
