ThischapterexplainshowtoinstalltheRealPOS80chardware, includingoutofboxinstallationandhowtoinstalltheoptional peripheraldevices. The7456isdesignedwithflexibilityofhowtoconfiguretheintegrated displaysandprinters.Fillerplatesareusedwherethereareno peripheralspresent. The7456isveryflexibleinhowitcanbeinstalled.Atypical configurationisdiscussedinthisdocument.Yourconfigurationmay requireadjustmentstotheprocedures.

Installation Restrictions
BeforeinstallingtheRealPOS80c,readandfollowtheguidelinesin theRealPOS80cSitePreparation(B00500001360)andtheNCR WorkstationandPeripheralACWiringGuide(BST0211553). InstalltheRealPOS80cnearanelectricaloutletthatiseasily accessible.Usethepowercordasapowerdisconnectdevice. Donotpermitanyobjecttorestonthepowercord.Donotlocate theRealPOS80cwherethepowercordcanbewalkedon. Useagroundingstraportouchagroundedmetalobjectto dischargeanystaticelectricityfromyourbodybeforeservicingthe RealPOS80c.

Humanerrorcancausememorydumpimagestoberebuilt incorrectly.Anexamplewouldbemixingfilesfromdifferent memorydumps. Novideoorkeyboardinteractionduringthememorydump processisprovided.Allinformationisprovidedtotheuserbyway ofspeakertunesandbeeps. IfaprotectmodeNMIhanderisnotsetuptodirectNMIstothe realmodevectorcapturedbytheMemoryDumpROM,thesystem experiencesthedefaultprotectmodeNMIhandlingdefinedbythe operatingsystemand/orcompilersused.Oftenthisisafatalsystem error. Corruptionoftheinterruptvectortablewillpreventmemory dumpsfromworking.IftheNMIisnotroutedthroughtothe ROM,thememorydumpprocesscannotstart.TheMemoryDump ROMusesseveralBIOSinterruptstoaccessthediskette,gettime anddate,anddeterminetheamountofextendedmemorypresent. CorruptionoftheinterruptchainfortheseBIOSinterruptswill preventmemorydumpsfromworking/completing. MemorydumpsarenotsupportedwithNuMegasSofticeor otherequivalentprogramsinstalled.TheROMsaccessing extendedmemoryfordumpingofaddressespastthe15.75MB boundarywithSoftice2.80installedresultsinSofticepoppingup andproclaimingaprotectviolation,failingthedumpprocess. Afterthefilesareontheharddisk,theDOSutilityassemble.exeisrun tobuildthememorydumpimagefromtheindividualfiles.The individualdiskettefileswillbeleftontheharddiskandmustbe removedmanually. FollowthesestepswhenreassemblingthediskettesontothePC: 1. ChangetoadirectoryonthePCthathasnootherdumpinfo.xxx files.Thisisimportanttopreventfilesfromdifferentmemory dumpsbeingintermixed. 2. Copyeachdiskettesdumpinfo.xxxfiletotheharddiskusingcopy /ba:\dumpinfo.*. 3. Reassembleallindividualcomponentfilesintothememorydump imagebyrunningassemble.exe. Memory Dump Assembler


TheMemoryDumpAssemblerisasimpleDOSapplicationthat reassemblesthebinaryfilesresultingfromamemorydumpintoa consolidatedmemorydumpimage.TheutilityispartoftheMemory DumpAnalyzerUtility(4970406704).Thefilenameisassemble.exe, whichisacommandlinedrivenapplication.Thecommandlineis:
assemble -i <input files basename> -o <output file name>

where: i specifiesthebasenameoftheinputfiles(8charactersmax). Allinputfilesmusthavethesamebasename.Donotspecifyan extension.Thedefaultbasenameisdumpinfo,whichisthe basenameusedbythememorydumpprocess. o specifiesthedestinationfilename.Specifyamaximumof twelvecharactersincludingtheextension,usingtheFAT8.3 filenameformat.Thedefaultfilenameextensionis*.dmp.

Thediskettefilescomposingtheimagemustbemovedmanuallytoan emptysubdirectoryataMemoryDumpAnalyzerworkstation.Once allthefilesareontheharddisk.Runassemble.exefromthatdirectory. assemble.exeusesallfilesinthecurrentdirectorywiththe configuredbasenameandanumericalextensionintheform.001,.002, etc,tobuildtheMemoryDumpAnalyzercompatibleimage. assemble.exestopswhenafilewiththenextsequentialextension cannotbelocated.Usecaretonotskipanyfileswhenmovingthe diskettefilestoharddisk.Alistoffilesusedinbuildingtheimagewill bedisplayeduponexit.
