Explore the description of the community and lifestyle of Rawiri in Papua New Guinea.

Jeff goes back Papua New Guinea and Rawiri follows him back. He works in Jeffs family plantation. It had soaring temperatures, its terrain so much a crucible of crusted plateaus and valleys and its tribalism. In the first year and a half Rawiri could not relax at all, but by the middle of the second year, he was able to relax and adapt to the Papua New Guinea culture. He was being ostracized by Jeffs family and friends.

What issues does this country face that are similar to Aotearoa? Fractionalization Racism/Racial Discrimination - Rawiri and the natives (which are of the same culture) are being discriminated against based on their race by the White Australians in both New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Both countries were predominantly European dominated due to colonialism and Rawiri states that the acceptance of Maori culture is completely dependent on European goodwill. He had broken a cardinal rule of mixing with the natives and was thus ostracized. It was polite racism, where it wasnt direct but indirect. Both countries are gearing towards nationalism regardless of rather their citizens want it or not, to become one Maori nation.

What role does this setting play in the design of the text? He realizes that Kahu had been the person Koro was looking for all along He develops a further understanding of himself as a Maori He realizes that he belongs in New Zealand with his family and recognizes the importance of family and his culture that is now deeply embedded in him. This further emphasizes the theme of family in the book. Family is where you always come home to, which is a big part of Maori culture. He develops his own character and it shows Rawiris values as he wanted to get out of the car after they hit Bernard. He realizes that Papua New Guinea isnt the place for him and returns to New Zealand. The fact that Papua New Guinea is quite similar to New Zealand lets Rawiri think in restrospect and draws parallels from his home to his new home. It defines what home is. Theres nothing out there that I cant get here in Whangara.
