A Circular Patch Dual Band Circularly Polarized Pentagonal Slot Antenna for Mobile Communication System

Introduction:
Microstrip antennas are widely used as an efficient radiator in many communication systems. One of the most interesting applications is their use for transmitting or receiving systems, required for circular polarisation. Many types of antennas are used for mobile satellite communications to enable airplanes, ships and vehicles to maintain communication link. Such systems require circularly polarized antennas. Microstrip patch antennas are of great interest for mobile communication applications due to their thin and compact structures. The flexibility afforded by microstrip antenna technology has led to a wide variety of designs and techniques. The usability of circularly polarized microstrip antennas in mobile systems is limited by their narrow axial ratio bandwidth. Several impedance bandwidth enhancement techniques are available in open literature. However, not many antenna configurations exist in literature for obtaining a wide ellipticity bandwidth and is still a challenging task. The ring antenna is very attractive because wireless communication systems usually require smaller device size in order to meet circuit miniaturization and cost reduction. The radiation characteristics of a ring slot microstrip antenna are complementary to those of a ring microstrip antenna with electric and magnetic field interchanged using Babinets principle. Slot microstrip antennas are usually designed for a linear polarization. However, the circularly polarized antennas are attracting much attention in recent years. In some applications such as satellite communication systems, a circular polarization (CP) antenna is more suitable because of its insensitivity to transmitter and receiver orientations. They are also used in radar to reduce the clutter from spherically symmetric objects like raindrops, hail, etc.. For the design of the single-feed ring slot microstrip antenna with CP operation, generally the required two orthogonal modes with equal amplitude and 90 phase difference can be excited by dual feeding, by protruding a tuning stub, and by a pair of perturbations, which is located at one of diagonals.
