Neither This Nor That, Just Me: A Transgender and Bi-Racial Child Case Study Presented by Kelsey Hanlon, MA

Program Description
The case study of a young bi-racial and transgender child will be presented. Using theoretical concepts such as Freuds bodily ego and the ego ideal we will reflect on the case. The ways in which countertransference has guided the therapists work in understanding the child and family will be explored. Unique aspects of working with trans* individuals and children will also be highlighted.

Learning Objectives

After this workshop participants will be able to:


1. Describe the concepts of the bodily ego and the ego ideal and the ways in which they uniquely apply to the trans* experience. 2. List 3 unique aspects of working with trans* individuals. 3. Analyze ones own countertransference reactions to working with trans* individuals.

Schedule and Format

7:00 PM 9:00 PM
The meeting will begin at 7:00 PM with some light snacks and drinks. The presentation will begin at 7:30 PM with the introduction of Kelsey Hanlon. The meeting will end at 9:00 PM.

About the Presenter


Kelsey Hanlon, MA is a graduate of the Mental Health Counseling program at Christian Theological Seminary (summa cum laude). The program focuses on psychoanalytic and psychodynamic thought and provided the foundation for her ways of working. She is a resident psychotherapist in practice at the 921 Group. In her practice she sees individuals, couples, and groups with a variety of struggles and dynamics with a focus on trans* persons. Currently she is the Secretary of the Indiana Society for Psychoanalytic Thought. She has presented and published on trans* issues and coming out as a spiritual journey

Fees, Policies and Participants


Free to ISPT Members and guests. It is the policy of ISPT to encourage multidisciplinary learning. This seminar is appropriate for the intermediate level of knowledge in the area of psychoanalysis. Enrollment is intended for psychologists and other mental health practitioners, graduate students and all who are interested in psychoanalysis.

Continuing education This program is offered for 1.5 continuing education credits. The entire meeting must be attended in order for attendees to
receive certificates. Upon completion of an evaluation form, a certificate will be provided. This serves as documentation of attendance for all participants. Psychologists will have their participation registered through Division 39.

Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Division 39 maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Participants are asked to be aware of need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program.
