1 / 1 Service Bulletin RN-3
FUEL NOZZLES WITH ROUNDEDOFF INSIDE EDGES OF THE SPRAY HOLES
Sharp inside edges of the fuel nozzle spray holes become more or less roundedoff over a
period of time by the passing through of the fuel. As a result of this, the distance range of the
fuel jets is gradually changed, the injection pressure drops, the atomisation of the fuel
becomes worse and, in all, this has an unfavourable influence on the combustion.
Tests have shown that, by roundingoff the inside edges of the spray holes during
manufacturing of the nozzles, the distance range and form of the fuel jet as well as the
injection pressure remain practically constant over a long period of operation. This means
that combustion also is stable, which, besides fuel economy, has a favourable influence in
respect of the contamination of the scavenging and exhaust system.
Such fuel nozzles with roundedoff inside edges of the spray holes are marked with an R after
the figures indicating the spray hole diameter are called "R-nozzles".
The R-nozzles are standard for RN..M engines.
At the time of writing, R-nozzles are also available from New Sulzer Diesel for RN type
engines. Compared to the original fuel nozzles, the diameter of the spray holes is smaller but
the number of holes may be greater.
The R-nozzles can also be used instead of the old ones for individual cylinders as well.
Existing stocks of the original nozzles may still be used.
Nozzles with the new specification (R-nozzles) should only be obtained via the New Sulzer
Diesel Organisation in order to ensure correctly roundedoff spray holes. If the contours of
the inside edges are too sharp, the injection pressure will be inadmissibly high.
