They were surprised that I am still breastfeeding the kid as she is turning 10mth soon. The usual concern, "Yo ur milk enough meh? Baby got eat porridge or not?" But luckily the three of them are big TV fans and watches TV all the times, so they must have watched all the parenting programmes that praised the goodness of breastmilk. They all agreed t hat mama's milk is more nutritious, but then, must train the baby to take formul a also...well, the strong marketing strategies of formula milk is so powderful, it has already became a norm to take formula, while breastfeeding becomes the un common practice.

Then my sixth aunt begun advising me to eat more tonics, because the baby is drinking my milk, and milk is blood! She will be sucking away all my nutrients. I was laughing it off, and then my second aunt showed me a very serious face an d told me, Really, milk is blood, or else why you don't menstruate when you are b reastfeeding." I have come across this old wives tale before in the Asia Parent Mailing Lis t, and managed to dig out the relevant information to dispell this myth.

The story goes like this:

Long ago, in rural China, a boy of 13yrs frequently skip short pe riods of school during the day. The teacher was curious and followed him 1 day.< /p>

Apparently, he went home to "look" for his mummy for... breastmilk. The teach er asked the mother why is she still breastfeeding him? "I tried to wean him, sc old him, and beat him to no avail" she replied.

Next day, Teacher asked the boy to bring a glass of mummy's milk to school. H e poured the milk onto a shallow plate and place under the sun. "Stay here and w atch over the plate of milk" he instructed.

To the boy's horror, the milk dried up into blood. "By drinking your mummy's milk, you are actually drinking off her blood" said Teacher.

From then on, boy stopped breastfeeding....
-CE
Then one of the members responded, comparing breastmilk to blood:

Breastmilk is essentially white blood (blood is red because of ha emoglobin). It contains white blood cells and antibodies (IgA, IgM and a little IgG), along with all sorts of minerals and nutrients. Blood nourishes us, and br eastmilk nourishes our young. It is "alive" and not processed/extracted from som e alternative source. I do not find it horrifying. In fact, it speaks volumes ab t the benefits and importance of breastfeeding, and that NOTHING can ever replac e that. Just like nothing can replace the function blood performs for a human be ing.
-Ling
This got many mummies excited. I also thought breastmilk is really similar to bl ood, until someone posted another article to clear the myth:

OK, have to clarify this and set the record straight - breastmilk is not made from blood... but like blood, it is a body fluid. Urine is also a body fluid, so is saliva, sweat etc.

Breastmilk largely comprises water, fatty acids, nutrients, anti-infective ag ents etc. Milk synthesis happens within the breast.

Blood is an agent of transport - they transport oxygen, nutrients, waste etc to the relevant agencies/organs for the relevant process i.e. defecation, urinat ion, oxygenation, etc. It certainly does not 'make' breastmilk! And breastmilk i s certainly NOT blood w/o the haemoglobin - both are entirely different.

I agree though, with the emotive similarity - both are life-sustaining fluids ! :)
-Pat

Well, I still don't know if milk contains white blood cells, but it is defini tely not blood, since it is "manufactured" in the breast. And saying breastmilk is from our is even more ridiculous and yucky!

Posted by hait on 2:48pm :: add new comment</
