Global success stories

Our expertise and industry knowledge have been built on projects around the globe, allowing our teams to develop detailed localised knowledge of the 80 plus countries in which we have worked.

Callide Oxyfuel Project Australia

Client Callide Oxyfuel Services Pty Ltd This world first, clean coal project involves retrofitting one of the existing 30 megawatt units at Callide A Power Station to enable oxyfuel combustion and carbon dioxide capture. The project has the potential to demonstrate how existing coal fired power stations could be adapted to produce almost zero emissions electricity. Aurecon provided owners engineer services, including a site team, during the construction phase. The project was implemented using a multicontract project delivery approach with five different main contractors. The site work included retrofitting the existing boiler, constructing two new oxygen production plants and carbon dioxide capture facilities, as well as various balance of plant modifications. Aurecon provided a team of experienced personnel to assist the client to implement the multiple contracts and various interfaces.

Queensland Alumina Ltd (QAL) High Voltage Reticulation Upgrade Australia

Client QAL QALs Gladstone refinery has been operating since 1967 and is one of the largest alumina refineries in the world. The refinerys 11 kiloVolt distribution network is one of Queenslands largest and most complex for an industrial plant. This project involved converting the ageing network to a new distribution arrangement that will meet QALs needs for safety in operation, security of supply and scope for future expansion. Aurecon undertook the initial options analysis and feasibility studies for the project and delivered the definitive engineering phase, project implementation and successful handover. Aurecon worked closely with QAL to develop the preferred solution, which included a simplified 11 kiloVolt network arrangement. New switchboards enabled the pairing of incoming transformers to address fault levels and security issues, as well as interconnection with QALs onsite generation. The main substation was also linked to the newer substation.

Transmission Lines and Substations Libya

Client General Electric Company of Libya (GECOL) Aurecon, in association with Libyan consulting company ACESCo, was appointed to provide services for electrical power supply construction projects in several locations in Libya, inclusive of an overhead transmission line in the Sahara desert. The project consisted of a 175 kilometre 220 kiloVolt coastal power line, a 105 kilometre 220 kiloVolt inland power line and three (220, 66 and 30 kiloVolt) gas insulated switchgear stepdown substations. Aurecon adopted a hands-on project management approach to deliver new electrical infrastructure, providing a broad range of project management, engineering and technical services. Aurecon also provided a group of Libyan engineers with classroom training on site management systems, skills training for site supervision and the construction principles of overhead line and substation construction.

Nam Theun 2 Hydroelectric Project Laos

Client Nam Theun 2 Power Company The hydropower project involved construction of a 1 070 megawatt hydroelectric power station in the Nam Theun River a trans-basin scheme, diverting water from the Nam Theun River catchment into the Xe Bang Fai River system, producing 348 metres of net head to drive the generating units. Aurecon was engaged to undertake tender, preliminary and detailed design and documentation of the downstream channel works. Aurecon applied a programme of numerical modelling (one dimensional, two dimensional and computation fluid dynamics) and physical model testing to facilitate the hydraulic design of the channel, rock protection, hydraulic structures and river confluences. The modelling was also used to investigate air entrainment and ensure that water quality criteria would be satisfied. Aurecons integrated team of hydraulic specialists, structural and civil designers, geotechnical engineers and geologists worked with geomorphologists and international dam experts to deliver an innovative, effective design for the project.

P40 Gas Turbine Plant New Zealand

Client Genesis Energy Pty Ltd Commissioned as owners engineer and project manager, Aurecon awarded six contracts in a multicontract approach to complete the installation of the new 40 megawatt gas turbine power plant against a tight timeframe. We also utilised specialist sections within Aurecon for technical engineering and project management services to minimise the project duration. A dual fuel General Electric LM6000 PC SPRINT gas turbine that operates above 40 per cent efficiency and produces 48 megawatt at ISO conditions was installed. To maximise safety and accessibility to the gas turbine, electrical and mechanical services were located inground, including over 500 metres of three 220 kiloVolt cables between the main transformer and the switchyard. To facilitate the potential relocation of the gas turbine in the future, a two HV winding (220 kiloVolt and 110 kiloVolt) transformer was used. Additionally, Aurecon designed the layout and services with provision to install a second similar gas turbine plant of either open cycle or combined cycle configuration adjacent to the present site.

Global success stories

Certificate of recognition Association of Consulting Engineers Australia Awards for Excellence 2009 Eyre Peninsula Australia
Client ElectraNet Pty Ltd The 132 kiloVolt transmission line was recently upgraded without lost time safety incidents or interruption of supply, ahead of schedule and within budget. The 270 kilometre long line connects Port Lincoln to the high voltage transmission network at Whyalla and has 620 towers with an average span of 440 metres. Aurecon provided all concept design, detailed design and construction phase support services for the project.

Winner PACE Zenith Awards 2010 Category: Power and Energy Management Huntly Power Station Control System Upgrade New Zealand
Client Genesis Energy Pty Ltd Huntly Power Station, New Zealands largest thermal power station, provides power for approximately 15 per cent of the New Zealand load or one million households. Aurecon was owners engineer for the control system upgrade at the four 250 megawatt coal-fired generating units. The previously segregated unit controls were replaced with a single, integrated, modern control system solution to enhance generation reliability, efficiency, functionality and flexibility. The more sophisticated automation delivered improvements in key performance indicators, including faster unit start-up times and improved fuel control. Aurecon delivered comprehensive engineering services from site survey to contract management and site supervision of installing and commissioning works, achieving a highly successful project.
