ISSUE AT A GLANCE

A winter snow both delayed and emphasized the introduction of the 2014 Great
Smoky Mountains National Park quarter
Jan. 29 in Gatlinburg, Tenn.
More than 300 persons, including 40
kids, braved the elements to attend a launch
ceremony that began an hour and a half late.
National Park Acting Superintendent
Pedro Ramos joined U.S. Mint Acting
Associate Director of Manufacturing Dave
Croft for the launch and a ceremonial coin
pour introducing the 21st design of the
America the Beautiful series.
This new quarter reflects the nations
continuing fascination with the beauty,

Peace Dollar w/essentially flawless surfaces, a sharp
strike & beautiful rich mint luster. A touch of pleasing
light golden-tan adds to the remarkable eye appeal
of this Superb Gem. Only 2 have graded higher at
PCGS and none at NGC. . . . . . . . #211070 $4950.00
1885 $3. PCGS. MS-62. Gorgeous intense yellowgold luster w/proof-like surfaces and considerable
mint frost on the design elements. There are only
minimal minor marks and the overall eye appeal
far exceeds the technical grade of this beautiful
rarity. Only 801 minted! . . . . . #211071 $9395.00
1910-D $5. PCGS. MS-63. A scarce and underrated
date in mint state w/a small mintage of just 193,600.
This example has nice yellow-gold surfaces that are
completely original. The strike is very solid and the
few marks that define the grade take little away
from the excellent appearance of this lovely coin.

David C. Harper
If the coins in the rolls are not identical, could I give him information as to
what the average grade was likely to be
in each roll?
Again, I told him, there was no way to
tell. There are probably some MS-65 pieces in each roll along with some MS-63s
as well as others, but whether there are
any or a lot was not something that can
be reduced to an average, especially if the
coins have had more than one owner.
I told him rolls tend to be valued by
the lowest common denominator because
over time, the contents of a roll are
examined and any truly breath-taking
coins are removed. The older the roll
is and the more owners it has had, the
greater the likelihood that the coins
inside would end up on the low side of
the Mint State scale.

Commemorative coin
program needs close look
In the Jan. 28 Numismatic News you
stated on page 18 that For the first time,
an organization [Girl Scouts of America] so
honored [by a commemorative coin] will not
get any surcharges because sales were insufficient to cover the Mints production costs.
While I have no way to verify this statement,
I believe you to be truthful.
Given that statement as truth, I must
wonder that the Mints costs of production are
so high as to gobble up the entire amount

can add to the concerns the possibly deceptive
pricing practices of the U. S Mint.
If the commemorative coin program is to
continue or more to the point if it is to
remain/become a viable program with meaning (other than as a way for the Mint to pad its
budget) the Secretary of the Treasury needs to
require a detailed evaluation of the program
to include: purpose, scope/limitations, surcharges (including guarantees), coin designs,
and overall price structure. If unwilling to
do this, perhaps it is time for this version of
the commemorative to disappear for another
quarter century or so.

30 years ago at most businesses. Once this trend is firmly in place
and the $50 replaces the $20 as the workhorse of commerce, the
end of the dollar bill would be almost guaranteed in order to make
room for the higher denomination notes in the register drawer.
Anyone who doubts the logic of all this need only take a trip to
the local doughnut shop. My favorite place here in Kansas City now
returns $6 and a few coins change on a $20 bill with the purchase

Here are some answers sent from our e-newsletter readers to Editor Dave Harper. Read more responses at www.numismaticnews.com.
Sales of 2014 proof silver American Eagles are stonger than last year.
Did you buy more?
The stronger sales of proof Eagles
this year can be attributed mostly to TV
marketers. The proofs are advertised in
Proof-69 and Proof-70 slabs every day.
To enhance demand, the coins are
offered in various slab designs such as
First Strike, Golden Gate Bridge edition, and other nonsense. Plus, one can
buy ICG, NGC or PCGS certified coins.
Thus, it is possible to collect proof coins
in probably 20 different slabs.
Why collect coins when one can collect different slabs?

If my budget allows, Ill surely purchase more. I didnt do badly last year,
considering the U.S. Mint, dealers and
coin shows, which seemed to have had
an adequate supply of silver Eagles. Im
glad sales are initially stronger this year
as you say.
Ken Kassen Shawnee, Kan.
No, I only bought one coin, not certified, not slabbed. I cant see spending
all those extra dollars for First Strike or
Proof-70 or whatever.
One ounce of silver is still one ounce
of silver. I also bought one silver Canadian

beyond the normal capacity of authorities to handle. This is especially true of civil wars. This display features a selection from the
Money Museum exhibit A House Divided: Money of the Civil
War in Colorado Springs and highlights some of the difficulties
faced by the Confederacy as it attempted to create a new national
currency and finance a war from scratch.
As a special attraction, the Museum Showcase will also feature an
1862 Gatling gun, a weapon used by the Union during the Civil War.
1792 Half Disme An estimated 1,500 half disme (an early
version of dime) silver coins were struck in the basement of a
saw-makers shop in Philadelphia in 1792 because the U.S. Mint
was not yet operational. The coins - slightly smaller than a modern dime and weighing half as much - were first authorized by
President Washington under the Mint Act of 1792. According to
legend, the silver used to mint the 1792 half dismes came from
Martha Washingtons personal silverware. Thomas Jefferson,
then serving as secretary of state, personally received the coins
on Washingtons behalf. Modern researchers estimate that about
275 of the 1,500 originally struck survive today. The coin was
donated to the Money Museum by Steven L. Contursi.
1804 Dollar, Idler/Bebee Class III Known as The King
of U.S. Coins, the 1804 dollar is extremely rare, with only 15
known examples. Class I 1804-dated silver dollars were actually
struck in the 1830s when the United States Mint was asked by
to produce them for sets of U.S. coins to be presented to foreign
dignitaries. Class III specimens (six known) were struck during
the 1850s for collectors. The Idler/Bebee specimen was donated
to the ANA by Aubrey and Adeline Bebee.
1913 Liberty Head V Nickel, McDermott/Bebee This
famous coin is one of five 1913 V nickels that were struck in
mysterious circumstances at the Philadelphia Mint. The design
for these coins was used from 1883 to 1912. In 1913 they were
replaced by the Buffalo nickel design; however, five unauthorized V nickels were struck with the 1913 date. The existence
of the nickels was unknown until 1919, when an advertisement in
The Numismatist offered to purchase any example for $500. The
ad was placed by Samuel W. Brown, a former Mint employee. In
1920 Brown exhibited all five nickels at the ANA convention in
Chicago. The McDermott/Bebee specimen was donated to the
ANA by Aubrey and Adeline Bebee.
The Atlanta National Money Show features more than 500
numismatic dealers with an extensive inventory; a major auction by Heritage Auctions; the ANA Museum Showcase; the
Collector Exhibits area; exhibits by the Bureau of Engraving and
Printing and the United States Mint, as well as educational presentations and seminars. Show hours are 1 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday,
Feb. 27; 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28; and 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. Saturday, March 1. ANA members are admitted free. Public
admission is $6 for adults and free for children 12 and under
Feb.27-28, and free for everyone on Saturday, March 1.

Convention rate.
Patricia Foley, general chairman for the
convention, said of the event. The NWPMC
is really just the right size, large enough to
be commercially significant, but with 75
booths and roughly 85 separate dealers, it
is realistically possible for our attendees to
visit and have a meaningful interaction with
almost all our booth holders.
With dealers from roughly 20 different states, well have a cross section
of some of the most significant players
in the coin and currency trade. Coupled
with the Lyn Knight auction, I feel that
the NWPMC is a veritable must do for
people who are really serious in their
numismatic interests.
Dealers interested in bourse space at
the event should contact Foley via e-mail
at kfoley2@wi.rr.com, or by telephoning
(414) 807-0116.

Knight auction company can be found
