AutoCADP&IDReferenceProject
Formanycompanies,thedefaultstandardmaynotbesufficient.Itisagoodbaseforstartingadrawing,but
therearealwaysspecificcompanysymbolsandsettingsthatrequirecustomizingoneofthedefaultstandards.
Inthecomingchapters,wewillteachyouhowyoucancreatereferenceprojects,addsymbolsand
annotations,andcustomizetheAutoCADP&IDenvironmentsoitbecomessuitableforyourcompany.
First,youneedtounderstandsomebasicissuesconcerningAutoCADP&ID.Forinstance,AutoCADP&IDis
controlledbysomethingcalledaproject.Thisprojectcontainseverythingyouneedtocreateprocessand
instrumentdiagrams.Itemssuchassymbols,annotations,andtemplatesaswellasthelocationtostoreyour
settingsanddrawingsareallpartofyourproject.Eachprojectiscontrolledthroughspecificfilesthatcontain
allsettings,valuesandothernecessaryinformationandthesefilesarelocatedintheprojectfolder.

HowAutoCADP&IDworks
ThisparagraphgivesyouasomewhatbetterideahowAutoCADP&IDcommunicatesandfunctionstohelpyou
whencreatingyourownsymbolsandannotationslateroninthiscourse.Wetriedtocompressthe
informationintotwoeasytounderstandimagesandsomenecessaryexplanation.Theimageshowshow
AutoCADP&IDusespresetupinformationtolettheusercreatehisorherP&IDsandwhatpossibilities
AutoCADP&IDoffersforsharingthisinformationwithotherpeople.

Toworkcorrectly,AutoCADP&IDrequiressymbolsandpropertieswhichmustbestoredinaproject.This
makesitpossibletodefinemorethanoneprojectwithdifferentstylesandproperties,makingAutoCADP&ID
veryflexibleandeasytouseforalltypesofcompanies.
WhencreatingandmaintainingtheP&ID,theuseroftenneedstoimport,exportandchangeinformation
connectedtothevariouscomponents.TheDataManagerinAutoCADP&IDallowstheusertofulfillthistask
inaverystraightforwardbutpowerfulwaywithveryfewlimitations.
Tocommunicatewithotherprojectmembers,youcanuseAutoCADP&IDtopublishhardcopiesaswellasto
createallkindsofreportsforusethroughouttheentireprojectteam.

SymbolsandAnnotations
TheimageshowsushowAutoCADP&IDsymbolsacquirethenecessaryinformationandhowtheybehave
whenplacedonthedrawing.

Everysymbolisessentiallybuiltinthesameway;thesymbolitselfisactuallyanormalAutoCADblockthatis
convertedintoanAutoCADP&IDobjectwhenplacedontothedrawing.Therefore,allsymbolsand
annotationscontainstandardAutoCADPropertiessuchaslayer,color,linestyle,etc.
BecausethesymbolshavebeenaddedtotheAutoCADP&IDproject,theyareautomaticallyequippedwith
ConfigurationProperties,whichcanbemadevisibleusingtheDataManager.TheDataManagershowsus
thesymbolsDataProperties,whichcanbedefinedbytheuserandwhichcandifferforeachsymbol.
AllsymbolsalsohaveBehavioralPropertieswhichallowthemtobeexchangedwithadifferentsymbolorto
changetheflowdirectionofasymbol.
AllsymbolsarealsoequippedwithaTag,whichiscontrolledbytheTagFormat.TheTagitselfcanbe
madevisibleusingAnnotations,whichareactuallytextthatisenteredusingtheDataProperties.

StartingaNewProject
Afteryouselectthe"NewProject"option,whenyouselectedthedropdownlistboxintheProjectManager,
AutoCADP&IDwillshowyouthewizarddialogboxneededforprojectcreation.
Thecreationofaprojectrequiresthattheuserfollowsasequenceofscreenswhereanumberofbasic
settingswillbeputintoplace.Inthisparagraphwearegoingtoexplainwhichsettingsarerequiredandwhy,
butalsotodeterminewhichstandardshouldbeusedforyourproject.
Thefirstscreenofthewizardwillasktheusertonametheprojectandoptionallyaddadescription.Alsothe
userhastodeterminewheretheprojectwillbestored;inthiscasetheuserselectsthemainlocationof
AutoCADP&IDprojects.AutoCADP&IDthenwillcreateafolderwiththeprojectnameasauniquelocation.

Ifthereareanysupportingfilesthataregoingtobeused,theuseralsocansetthelocationforthosefilesas
wellinthisfirstscreenofthewizard.Andlastbutnotleast,iftheuseralreadyhasaprojectsetup,which
alreadycontainsthenecessarysettings,heorshecanchoosethisexistingprojectaswelltostartanew
project.

Note
Thecreationofanewprojectbasedonanexistingprojectwillresultinacopy
oftheexistingproject,includingallsettings,foldersandotherrequired
settings.Soifyouwanttousethisfunctionalityitisveryimportantthatyour
referenceprojectissetupperfectly.

Whensatisfiedwiththebasicsettings,youselectthe[next]button,whichwillguideyoutothenextscreenof
thewizardwithsomeadditionalsettings.

Inthesecondscreenofthewizardtheuserhastochoosewhichunitshavetobeusedinhisproject.The
selectioninthisscreenwillalsodeterminewhichdefaultstandardstheusercanselectinthefollowingscreens
oftheprojectwizard,sobecarefulchangingafterwardswillnotbepossibleandrequiresalotoftweakingin
yourprojectsetup.

Nowthatyouhavedeterminedwhichunitsyouaregoingtouse,youcanacceptthembypressingthe[next]
buttonagainwhichwillguideyoutothethirdscreenofthewizard.Thisscreenshowsthestandardsthatyou
canpick,basedonthesettingsImperialorMetricinthepreviousscreen.Nexttoselectingwhichstandard
touse,theuseralsohastodeterminewheretheAutoCADP&IDdrawingswillbesaved.DefaultAutoCAD
P&IDwillcreateaPIDDWGfolderbeneathyourmainprojectfolder,butyoucanchangethistoanylocation
youdesire(localoronanetwork).

Whenyoucontinuethewizard,againbypressingthe[next]button,anewscreenwillappear.Thisfourth
wizardscreenisnotthatinterestingforAutoCADP&ID,thesettingsshownherearerelatedtoAutoCADPlant
3Dandwillnotbeaddressedinthiscourse.

Thelastscreenofthewizardletsyoudecideifyouwouldliketocreatetheprojectinstantlyorifyouliketogo
intotheprojectsettingsaftercreation.Ifyouliketogointotheprojectsettingsaftercreation,selectingthe
Editadditional.Andturningitonwillguideyoustraighttotheprojectsettings.

Selectingthe[Finish]buttonwillendyourwizardandleadstothecreationofyourproject.Afterthecreation
youwillbereadytostartyourfirstdrawinginthenewlycreatedproject.

ProjectDetails
Thedialogboxesusedfortheprojectsettingsalsocontainallthenecessaryinformationforcreatingcustom
symbolsandannotations.Thesesubjectswillbeaddressedinachapterlateroninthiscourse.Inthis
chapter,wewillgodeeperintothegeneralsettingsrequiredforprojects.Wewillalsoshowyouhowtoadd
custompropertiesforuseinyourtitleblockfieldsandattributes.
Toopentheprojectsettingsdialogboxyourightclickontheprojectnameintheprojectmanager,inthepop
upthatcomestothefrontselectpropertiesandtheprojectsettingsdialogboxwillappear.

TogetabetterunderstandingofhowAutoCADP&IDworksitisnecessarytounderstandsomebasicsettings,
inthisparagraphwewillleadyouthroughthemostimportantsettingsthatAutoCADP&IDusesduringnormal
operation.

GeneralProperties
InthetopleftcornerofthedialogboxyouwillfindthesocalledGeneralPropertiesandtheywillshowthe
threebasicpropertieswhichcanbeusedintheAutoCADFieldfunctionality.Thesethreepropertiesare;
ProjectNameIsgeneratedduringprojectcreationandcannotbechanged
ProjectDescriptionCanbeenteredduringprojectcreation,butalsoafterwards
ProjectNumberMustbeenteredaftertheprojecthasbeencreated

TheseprojectpropertiesareoftenusedinthetitleblockofaP&IDandshowinformationthatisrequiredon
allthedrawings.Theinformationshownisusuallyenteredonesandnormallydoesntchangewhenaproject
isstarted.
GeneralandDrawingPaths
AutoCADP&IDusesseveralsettingswhichareusedtodeterminethelocation(s)ofreportfiles,project
settingsandwhattemplatetousewhencreatinganewdrawing.Inthisparagraphwearegoingtohavea
closerlookwhichpathsareusedandwhatthepurposeisoftheselocations.Firstwearegoingtohavealook
atthespecificprojectpathsandfurtherdownthisparagraphwewilllookatthenecessarydrawingpath(s).

Userdefinedreportsdirectory:
Thislocationisusedtostoreyourcustomreports,howtocreatethesereportswillbediscussedlaterthis
course.Inmanycases,whenworkingwithmultipleusers,thislocationisnotonyourharddrivebutona
networkenvironment.
Relatedfilesdirectory:
MostprojectsusemoreinformationthanjusttheP&ID,weoftenseeequipmentspecifications,vendor
informationetcAutoCADP&IDoffersacentralizedlocationthatcanbeusedtostorethesetypesoffilesand
justliketheuserdefinedreportsstoredinanetworkenvironment.

Itisclearthataprojectneedsspecificpathswhereinformationandsettingscanbestored,butdrawingsalso
requirespecificpointerstopathswhereinformationandsettingscanbefound.

P&IDDWGdirectory:
Thedefaultlocationwhereprojectdrawingswillbestored,thiscanbeoverruledbycreatingfoldersinthe
projectmanager.Folderscanbesetuptouseadifferentdrawinglocationthanthedefaultlocationofthe
project.
ProjectPackage:
ThisisthelocationwhereoneofthemostimportantfilesofAutoCADP&IDisstored,asyoucanseethis
cannotbechanged.IfyouarehoweverfamiliarwitheditingXMLfilesthenitispossibletodosomebackdoor
changesinthisfile.Togetthesebackdoorchangesintotheprojectthedcfxfilemustbereloaded.

Stop
BeforeyouevenstartthinkingaboutchangingtheProcessPower.dcfxfilejust
makesureyouhavemadeabackupofthisfile.Wealsowouldliketotellyou
thatmakingchangesinthisProcessPower.dcfxfileisatyourownriskandyou
reallyneedtoknowwhatcandoneandwhatshouldbeleftalone.

SymbolsandStyles:
AutoCADP&IDusesonespecificdrawingtoholdallsymbolsandannotations,whichareAutoCADblocks.This
drawingiscalledtheprojSymbStyle.dwg(orPSS)andisalwayslocatedinthesamefolderastherestofthe
projectspecificfiles.Makesurethatyoudontdeletethisfile,otherwiseAutoCADP&IDwillrecreateitinthe
samelocationbutonlywiththesymbolsinitthatwereusedtocreateyourP&IDs.Inotherwords,ifthere
werentanydrawingsinyourprojectthePSSwillbecompletelyempty.
Drawingtemplatefile(DWT):
ThedrawingtemplatefileisyourstartupdrawingwhereallAutoCADsettingsarestored.Settingslikelayers,
colors,textstylesandsucharepartofthistemplate.ThedrawingtemplatefileforAutoCADP&IDprojectscan
differfromtheAutoCADdrawingtemplatefile.

CustomProperties
Thegeneralpropertiesasmentionedinthepreviousparagraphareinmostcasesnotenoughtocompletely
describeyourproject.ThereforeAutoCADP&IDalsoiscapableofcreatingcustompropertiesthatcanbe
setuptouseoveralldrawingsintheproject.
Inthedefaultoutoftheboxsetuptherearealreadytwocustomcategorieswithseveralcustompropertiesin
it.Ifwelookforinstanceattheprojectdatawewillrecognizetheaddressandlocationoftheproject,the
clientinformationallowsustoenterevenmorenecessaryinformationtofullydescribetheproject.

Ifnecessaryyoucouldaddyourowncategoryandpropertiespercategorytoevenmaketheproject
informationmorecomplete.Addingacategoryisplainandsimple,youonlyneedtopressthe[Add]button
beneaththecategoriesandasmalldialogboxwillshowupandletsyouenterthecategoryname.
Toaddpropertiestoacategoryyousimplypressthe[AddRow]buttonwhichthenwillalsoshowasmall
dialogbox,butthistimenotonlyforanamebutalsoforavaluewhichthenwillbeusedacrosstheentire
project.

Note
Allinformationenteredintheprojectpropertiescanberetrievedinyour
drawingusingAutoCADFieldfunctionality.InformationonusingAutoCAD
P&IDsFieldfunctionalitieswillnotbecoveredinthiscourse.

Onthepreviouspagewediscussedtheusageofprojectpropertiesthatcanbeusedacrosseverydrawingin
theactiveproject.Howeverinmanysituationsthereisalsospecificinformationforthedrawingonly,based
onthesystemthathasbeendrawn.Soatthatmomentyouprobablywouldliketobeabletoenterdrawing
specificinformationthatisonlyavailableforthedrawingithasbeenaddedto.
Todothiswearegoingtohavealookfirstwherethedrawingpropertiescanbefound.Ifyougototheproject
manager,andyouclickonadrawingwithyourrightmousebutton,apopupmenuwillshowup(asitdoesin
manyothersituationsaswell).Inthispopupmenuyouwillseealsoanoptioncalledproperties,butbecause
yourightclickedonthedrawingthistimeitwillbethedrawingproperties.

Whenyouactivatethepropertiescommandthepropertiesdialogboxofthedrawingwillcometothefront
allowingyoutoaddmorespecificdrawinginformation.Thesepropertiescanalsobemadevisibleusingfields
again,similartotheprojectproperties.Afterselectingthepropertiesoptionofadrawingthedialogboxthat
showsupwillshowthefivedefaultavailableproperties,thesefivewillalwaysbethereandcannotbedeleted.

Addingyourowndrawingpropertiesisdoneinasimilarwayasthatyouveaddedtheprojectproperties.First
weneedtogetbackintotheprojectproperties,whichwecandobyrightclickingtheprojectintheproject
manager.Whenthepropertiesdialogboxcomestothefrontyouwillseethatthedrawingpropertiesare
locatedbeneaththeprojectdetails.

Asyoucanseetheyaretotallyemptyandactuallyhavethesametwocolumnsstheprojectproperties.Tothe
leftyouwillfindthecolumnforthecategoriesandontherightcolumnforthepropertiesthatyoucanaddper
category.Toaddacategoryyoujustneedtodothesameaswithprojectcategories,pressingtheaddbutton
willbringasmalldialogboxtothefrontwhichallowsyoutoaddthenameofthecategory.Ifthecategoryis
createdpressingtheaddrowbuttonwilladdapropertytothenewlycreatedcategory.

Whenyouhavecreatedcategoriesandproperties,thenyoucanfindtheseagainbyrightclickingthedrawing
intheprojectmanagerandselectingthepropertiesoption.Asyouwillseethecategoriesareplacedintheir
owngroupcontainingthepropertiesmadeinthespecificcategory.

Usingthisfunctionalitywillenableyoutoaddallthenecessaryinformationtoyourprojectandproject
drawings,andevenifyouwantcanbeusedinthetagsofyourequipmentandothercomponentsinyour
P&ID.

ToolPaletteGroupAssociation
ToolpalettesinAutoCADP&IDcanbeusedforactuallyanythingyoucanthinkoff.Ifyouareworkingwith
AutoCADP&IDprojectsyouprobablydontwanttosearchforthecorrecttoolpalettebelongingtoaspecific
project.WiththeToolpalettegroupassociationyoucansetwhichtoolpalettesetshouldbeloadedwhen
openingtheproject.

InthedropdownlistforAutoCADP&IDyouwillseethedefaulttoolpalettesthatcameinafterinstalling
AutoCADP&IDplusitwillalsoshowyourowncreatedtoolpalettes.Thiswayyouwillbecertainthatwhen
youopenaprojectthatthecorrecttoolpaletteforAutoCADP&IDisloadedandused.

Note
ThesectiontoloadthedefaultAutoCADPlant3Dtoolpaletteisshowninred,
thisbecause3DPlantandP&IDsharethesameresourcesbutisnotpresentin
thisinstallationofAutoCADP&ID.AutoCADPlant3Dwillbedeliveredwith
AutoCADP&IDembedded,soifyouinstallAutoCADPlant3Dbothoptionswillbe
available.

InteractiveZoomFactor
Inthedatamanagerthefirstcolumnallowstheusertozoomintotheselectedobject,dependingonthesize
oftheobjectthezoomfactorwillbecontrolledbythisparameter.Defaultthezoomfactorissetto0.4which
zoomsoutafactorof0.4.

Forinlineassets,equipmentandconnectorsthissettingisprettymuchokaybutforpipeandsignallinesit
willnotworkinthewayyouexpect.Ittakestheentirelineintoconsiderationandwillzoomoutprettyfar
away.

P&IDDWGSettingsLineSettings
WithAutoCADP&IDthelinesthatwillbedrawnarenotregularAutoCADlines,P&IDlinesarecalledschematic
linesorSlinesandtheybehavelikeanobject.WecansetupperprojectwhatthebehavioroftheSlines
shouldbe,inthisparagraphwearegoingtoshowhowthiscanbedone.Intheprojectpropertiesdialogbox
werecognizetheP&IDDWGSettings,belowtheP&IDDWGSettingsyouwillfindthesubnodecalledLine
Settingswhichcontrolsthebehaviorofthelines.

LineCrossingStyle:
TosetwhichGap/LooptypeshouldbeusedwhenSlinescross.Thepreviewimagesshowyouwhateach
optiondoes.Gap/LoopWidthisusedtodeterminethesizeofthegaportheloop.

ManualGapSymbolStyle:
DetermineswhichgapstyletousewhenaddinggapstoaSlinewithschematiclineedit.

StandoffDistance:
Standoffdistancedeterminestheminimumlengthofalinebeforeasecondlinecanbedrawn.

SchematicLineGrips:
Thisoptionsetsthedisplaymodeforgripswhenaprocesslineinyourprocessandinstrumentdiagramis
selectedandshowstheappropriategripsthatbelongtothissetting.

Createorthoschematicline:
ThisforcesAutoCADP&IDtodrawSlinesonlyashorizontalandverticalSlines.Thiscanalsobesetwiththe
AutoCADvariable"SlineOrtho".

MaintainSlineconnectionwhenmovingcomponents
Ensuresthatwhenyoumoveacomponenttheprocesslinewillstayconnected.

Exercise1
Inthisexerciseyouwillcreateanewprojectwithfoldersandsubfolders.Thesefoldersandsubfolderswill
havetheirownspecificsettings.Thefoldersandstructureyoucreateherewillbeusedinlaterexercisesto
saveyourdrawings.Ifnecessaryyoumayneedtorestructureyourprojectasshowninthecourseware.

Beforeacceptingthesesettings,makesurethattheoptionEditprojectpropertiesaftercreatingis
uncheckedordeactivated.Whentheprojectiscreatedyouaregoingtoaddsomefoldersandsubfolders
usingtheProjectManager.Eachfolderbecomesitsownfolderinyour"ProjectDWG"folderonyourhard
drive.

WhencreatingadrawinginOilsystemsorFuelsystems,thetemplatethatwillbeusedwillnotbeselectable;
however,ifyoumakeadrawingintheCoolingsystemsfolder,AutoCADP&IDshouldaskwhichtemplateto
use.

Themainfoldersyouaregoingtocreateare:
Oilsystems
Fuelsystems
Coolingsystems
Thesubfoldersinthisexercisearemainlyusedforvisualmeansandwillinheritthesamefoldersettingsasthe
mainfolders.Itispossibletocreatephysicalfoldersforsubfolders,butinthisexercisewedeactivatethe
"CreateFolder...."option.
Thesubfoldersfoldersyouaregoingtocreateare:
inOilsystems threesubfoldersnamedMain,SecondaryandFiltration.
inFuelsystems threesubfoldersnamedGas,GasolineandMeasuring.
