Getting exact gauge is not critical. It is
more important to get the row gauge
than the stitch gauge. To save time and
to ensure accurate sizing, check gauge.
NOTES
This shawl is a constellation chart, with Polaris, the North Star, at the center. Both eyelets and
beads mark the position of each star.
The shawl is worked from the center out. We recommend starting with double pointed needles,
and changing to progressively longer circular needles as there are enough stitches to do so.
Because there are no repeats of the stitch pattern in this design, the charts for the latter sections of
the shawl have been divided into multiple parts. Round 1 of Chart D1 is followed by Round 1 of
Chart D2 to make 1 complete round in the shawl. You may find it easier to follow the charts if you
cut them apart and tape them together in sequence. Stitch markers are placed to correspond with
the divisions in the charts.
Beads are placed on the stitch indicated in the chart using a crochet hook. See tutorial on page 19.

CIRCULAR BEADED CAST ON: A TUTORIAL

Keep in mind that this cast on
always has to be worked ending
with an odd number of stitches.
If you need an even number, cast
on one extra stitch. When you knit
the first round, slip off the extra
stitch when you reach it.
Step 1: Slip the bead onto the yarn.
Step 2: Arranging the yarn in a clockwise

manner, loop the yarn so that the yarn end
is crossed over the top of the working end.
Keep the bead in the ring.
Step 3: Pull the yarn end under the ring.

This loop is where you will slip your needle
through. Make sure the bead remains in
the lower part of the ring.
Step 4: With the needle pointing above

the ring, pull the working end of the yarn
over the top of the needle, then below the
under side of the ring.
Step 5: With the needle pointing into

the center of the ring, pull the working
yarn over the top of the needle, then back
upwards underneath the ring.
Step 6: Continue steps 4 and 5 until you

have the number of stitches needed.
Step 7: Divide the stitches evenly onto

three needles. Do not turn your work. You
will begin your first round by knitting the
first stitch you cast on.
Step 8: Once you have knit several

rounds, you can pull the loose end of the
yarn to close the hole.
