html Nobile Dendrobium (No-bill-ay Den-dro-bee-um)

The Nobile Dendrobium is native to the highlands of South East Asia and the Himalayas. These plants are semi-deciduous, meaning that they lose a portion of their leaves at some point during their gro ing or flo ering periods. These plants produce a profusion of s eet-scented blooms in the inter or early spring and can remain in flo er for up to t o months. E!pired flo ers should be removed by cutting them off at the point of emergence from the cane.

LIG !
To ensure good gro th and profuse flo ering, Nobile Dendrobium re"uires bright light and prefers some direct sun. #hile gro ing in your home $ctober through %ay, a very bright east e!posure that receives ample direct sun is ideal or, a south or est e!posure here the plant is receiving only a fe hours of direct sunlight daily. Nobile Dendrobium does best hen gro n outdoors during the months of &une through $ctober. Hang them from a tree or the overhang of your house, or place in a screened porch here they can receive some dappled sunlight. Nobile Dendrobium can benefit from higher intensities of light as the day length decreases to ards fall and into inter, and vice-versa for the spring and summer. Try to provide as much light as possible for your plant throughout the year ithout causing sun burn on the leaves. $nce your Nobile Dendrobium is in the flo ering stage it is best to shade it from any direct sun to prolong the life of the blooms.

!"#$"%&!'%"
$ne important cultural element for the Nobile Dendrobium is that they do best hen e!posed to a '( to ') degree differential bet een day and night temperatures. *t is for that reason e recommend to gro Nobile Dendrobium outdoors from &une until early $ctober. #hile gro ing outdoors these plants do not mind periodic temperature dips into the )(+s at night, as long as the temperature rises at least '( degrees or more during the day. *t ould be time to bring your Nobile Dendrobium indoors once the temperature differential bet een day and night becomes narro , for e!ample hen the $ctober day time temperature is consistently )) degrees and the nights are )( degrees. Do not ever allo your Nobile Dendrobium to free-e. $nce you have brought your Nobile Dendrobium indoors for the gro ing season of $ctober through %ay, it is best to place them in a sunny area that e!periences a nighttime temperature of )) to .( degrees. *n the home this can be best achieved by using a basement area or a spare room that you are able to reduce the nighttime heat source. /or the day time, it is still important that the plant e!periences a rise in temperature of at least '( degrees or more. $n cloudy inter days an artificial heat source may be needed to achieve the proper daytime temperature differential, hile the sunny days should generate enough armth for an ade"uate temperature differential. 0eep in mind that the cool night time temperature in the late fall and early inter promotes the onset of the flo ering period.

1roper indoor atering re"uires allo ing the bar2 mi! to become dry beneath the surface bet een atering cycles. /actors such as ho root bound your pot is, ho much light the plant is receiving, and hat si-e pot it is in, ill all play a role on ho fast it dries out. Typically hile gro ing indoors a good thorough atering once a ee2 should be sufficient. *n cases of root bound plants

gro n in arm, high light areas, atering every ) days is needed. #hen atering, ater the bar2 thoroughly until ater runs freely from the bottom of the pot. Al ays remove your pot from any decorative container to allo for proper drainage. Never allo your pot to stand in any ater as this ill cause root rot. Never use softened ater on any of your orchids. /or outdoor gro ing it is best to maintain slightly more moisture than for indoors. During the highest temperature periods 3mid summer4 e recommend to 2eep the Nobile Dendrobium moist but not soggy. A atering t ice a ee2 is usually needed during that period. As the temperature begins to drop to ards the end of the outdoor season, begin letting the bar2 become dry beneath the surface, much li2e the indoor atering schedule. #hile outdoors the natural rain on the plant is beneficial.

)"%!ILI*"%
The fertili-ing program for the Nobile Dendrobium is perhaps one of the most important and regimented of many orchid types. Too much fertili-er causes the formation of hat is commonly 2no n as the 0ei2i, hich in essence is the formation of an un anted vegetative shoot emerging from the mid to upper section of the cane. *f at any time your plant produces 0ei2i gro ths hich protrude from the mid to upper section of the cane, they should be removed and discarded. The proper fertili-ing regimen for Nobile Dendrobium is to apply a 5(-5(-5( or similar balanced fertili-er once every 5 to 6 ee2s from %arch through August. Discontinue fertili-ing from September through /ebruary. A safe dilution ratio is one level teaspoon of fertili-er mi!ed in one gallon of ater. Do not over-fertili-e as this ill cause permanent root damage.

'#IDI!+
7i2e most orchids, the Nobile Dendrobium en8oys a moderately humid climate of )(9 or greater. #hile gro ing outdoors this is not an issue since e generally have ade"uate humidity in our #isconsin summer climate. #hile gro ing indoors it is recommended to increase humidity around the plant simply by placing your plants on a humidity tray, misting them ade"uately in the morning, or grouping your plants all together in one area.

%"$,!!ING
#e recommend repotting Nobile Dendrobium every t o years. *f you are not e!perienced or comfortable doing this yourself e offer the repotting service at our greenhouse for a small fee. :our recently purchased Nobile Dendrobium may be ready for a repotting 8ob as soon as it has finished flo ering. *n"uire ith us as to hen your individual plant as last repotted. ;ood indicators for a repot candidate are< hen the rhi-ome and roots of the plant have protruded over the edge of the pot, hen the potting medium starts to brea2 do n and drain poorly, or hen the plant is completely root bound in the pot. *t is best to repot 8ust as ne roots sprout from the rhi-ome hich is typically after flo ering has completed or during the spring and summer months as the plant becomes actively gro ing again. Nobile Dendrobium may be divided if the plant has enough pseudobulbs 3commonly called canes4 to safely do so. A division should consist of four canes minimum, all still bearing healthy leaves. This ill ensure that the plant ill have enough strength for future gro th. 7arger divisions of .-'( canes are preferred, hich in turn ill ma2e for a specimen plant the ne!t blooming season. *f your plant is not dividable at this time simply repot it into a slightly larger pot. To ma2e a proper division, begin by e!amining your plant for a natural dividing line bet een the pseudobulbs that ill give you e"ual halves, both having at least one ne gro th if possible. =sing a large stiff 2nife, ma2e a cut through the rhi-ome and root mass to ma2e the division. Try to 2eep the root mass intact as much as possible as this ill prevent transplant shoc2. Some leaf-less canes

can be removed and discarded at this time, but it is important to 2eep your minimum number of canes to ensure a healthy division. A note about orchid viruses< most commonly the transmission of orchid viruses is caused by using the same cutting tool on multiple plants. The most effective method to reduce virus transmission from plant to plant is to briefly flame sterili-e all your cutting tools bet een use on each plant. A simple >utane torch or a gas stove are handy items for this purpose. This practice should be implemented hen repotting as ell as hen cutting off e!pired flo ering stems. $nce your division is made, select a ne pot in the appropriate si-e to allo for another t o years of gro ing. =nfortunately there is not a set rule for choosing the proper pot si-e, but generally you ill need to increase the pot si-e by one to t o inches. Do not use too large of a pot because these plants li2e to be some hat cro ded, even after repotting. The Nobile Dendrobium prefers to be potted into clay pots for the benefit of the porosity offered by the clay as ell as the stability from the eight. 1lace the plant into your selected pot and add our moistened fir bar2 orchid potting mi! around the roots. 1osition the plant in the pot so the 8unction of the plant and roots is buried one half inch belo the potting mi!ture. 1ac2 the potting mi!ture firmly ith a blunt tool to ensure the plant is secure in the pot. #ait about one ee2 and then ater thoroughly. /or more assistance ith your Nobile Dendrobium or any other $rchid, please call us at .(?-?6'@A((, send an email, or visit our greenhouses.

Asadar, cateva detalii despre fiecare:
