SupportingStudentsonPlacement GuidelinesforSchools AsaresultofSEEDinitiativesandtherecentReviewofInitialTeacher Education(AppendixIandweblink)LocalAuthoritiesnowhaveanenhanced roleinsupportingstudentsonplacementinschools. Inrecentyearsthenumberofstudentplacementshasincreasedsignificantly, whichinturnimpactsonindividualschoolsandtheLocalAuthority. Studentteachersrepresentthefutureoftheprofessionandexistingteacher havearesponsibilitytosupportthemasrecognisedintheTeaching st Professionforthe21 Centuryagreement,AnnexB. Theseguidelineshavebeendevelopedtoensurethateveryoneinvolvedis clearabouttheirresponsibilitiesinrelationtostudentplacements.Itoutlines thekeyresponsibilitiesoftheLocalAuthority,theTeacherEducation Institutions(TEIs)andSchools.

LocalAuthorityResponsibilities IdentifyaStudentPlacementOfficer(SPO)whowillberesponsibleforco ordinatingstudentplacementarrangements.Fundingforthiswillbe throughtheStudentPlacementbudgetallocatedbySEED. EnsurethatallschoolsandteachersarefullyawareoftheLocal Authoritysexpectationsofthemandcommitmentsinsupportingstudent placements. Takeresponsibilityforallocatingstudentstosuitableplacementsacross Aberdeenshireschools. WorkinpartnershipwithUniversityEducationFaculties(TEIs)andschools toofferappropriatesupportforstudentteachers. Offeradvice,guidanceandCPDtothoseschoolpersonnel(suchas studentregentsandmentors)witharemitforsupportingandmentoring studentteachers. MeetandliaisewithstafffromtheTeacherEducationInstitutionsand otherLocalAuthoritiestoensureanadequateallocationofstudent teachersamongstallpartnerLocalAuthorities. LiaisewithTEIsandotherLocalAuthoritiesonallmatterspertainingto studentplacementsthroughthefollowingpartnerships:Northern,Eastern andWesternHEPartnershipForumsandthroughtheNationalStrategy Group.

TeacherEducationInstitution(TEI)Responsibilities Ensurethatappropriatevettingproceduresareinplaceforallstudentsto includeDisclosureScotlandchecks. LiaisewithStudentPlacementCoordinator(SPC)aboutplacementdates andplacementrequirementslinkedtoagreedtimeline. SpecifystagesrequiredforeachplacementinthecaseofPrimaryschool placements. ProvideschoolsandtheStudentPlacementCoordinator(SPC)with ProgrammeHandbooks.Thesecanalsobelocatedthroughthelinksto Universitywebsites(AppendixII). Giveschoolssufficientnotice,wherepossible,ofthenamesofstudents duetovisitorstartaplacementintheschool.Exceptionalcircumstances mayleadtoshorternotification. GivetheStudentPlacementCoordinator(SPC)asmuchnoticeas possibleofadditionalplacementrequests,e.g.previsits. Preparestudentsadequatelyforplacements.Thisshouldinclude curricularknowledgeaswellasencouragementofprofessionalvalues suchasbeingreceptiveandresponsivetoadvicefromschools,beingfully preparedforclasses,punctualityandprofessionalresponsibilities. CoordinatethetraininganddeploymentofTutorswhoconductplacement visits. Liaisewithschoolstaffontheprogressofindividualstudentsduringschool experienceplacements. FacilitateliaisonbetweensubjectspecificTEItutorsandsecondary teachers. Participateinformalevaluationofstudentplacementsandbereceptive andresponsivetofeedbackfromschoolsandLocalAuthorityabout placements.Thiswillbesharedwithallstakeholders. Offeradvice,guidanceandCPDtothoseschoolpersonnel(suchas studentregentsandmentors)witharemitforsupportingandmentoring studentteachers. SchoolResponsibilities LiaisewithAberdeenshireStudentPlacementCoordinatorregardingthe numberofplacementsavailableeachsessionandidentifyingsituations withjustificationwhereastudentplacementinaschoolsordepartment wouldnotbeappropriate. Undertaketosupportstudentplacementsreflectingtheprofessional expectationsthatschoolsandsecondarydepartmentswillofferstudent placementsthroughouttheschoolyear. IdentifyanamedStudentRegent/Mentor(usuallyamemberoftheSenior ManagementTeam)andupdateannuallytoSPC. LiaisewithAberdeenUniversityCourseDirectorsonmattersrelatingto studentteachercompetenceandprofessionalismduringschool experience.AberdeenshireStudentPlacementCoordinatorshouldalso beadvisedwhereseriousconcernsarebeingexpressed.

Ensureteachingstaffareawareoftherequirementsofstudentplacements
andensurethatthesearemet. Organiseanintroductorymeetingforstudentteacherseitherpriortooron thefirstdayofplacementtomeetwithHeadTeacher,StudentRegent, PrincipalTeacher(subject)andStagePartner(primary). Ensurestudentteachersareofferedtherangeofexperiencenecessaryto allowthemtoworktowardstheSITE(AppendixIII). Identifytimeforstaffwithasupportroletobecomefamiliarwiththeirrole, associateddocumentationandmattersrelatingtoobserving,assessing andreportingonstudentsonplacement,meetingwithstudentstodiscuss theirprogressandsupportneeds,completecoredocumentation associatedwithstudentplacement,andfacilitatereleaseofstaffto undertakeprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitieswithAberdeenshireand Universitystaff.
